Thanks Adri, I'll take a look and let you know!

santiBOG comments on Looking for satellite photo of Bogota

By the way, the google maps/earth photo that i keep running into is not good, very cloudy and no zooming

santiBOG comments on House music and broadband?

I hope this helps... Broadband infrastructure is widely available in any of the cities you mentioned. I don't think that would be an issue. Your budget for accomodations is more than reasonable and you'll be able to find an apartment in a nice neighborhood for that money.

Now, you say you like electronica and house. Bogota would be the best bet for that, I think. There is an emerging scene here.. with many local DJs and places as well as the ocassional international celeb. I mean, if a foreign DJ is visiting Colombia, chances are that s/he'll come to Bogota.

You say you're in web dev... what is exactly your expertise?

santiBOG comments on Where, my Bogotians?

Nahhhh, TGI Friday's REALLY sucks. I suggest an Archie's or BBC.

santiBOG comments on Amazon basin trips

The best guide for tours in the amazon: His name is Felipe and you should email him at elpipe80 at hotmail. He will customize an itinerary for you based on your budget and time constraints (from hours to days to months). He is form Bogota but has lived near Leticia (Tabatinga I think) for years and knows the entire area real good, including the Peruvian, Ecudorian, Brazilian and obviously Colombia (Putumayo, Nariño, Amazonas, etc.). Absolutely the best if you're into some serious trekking. Expeditioners have come from as far as Russia and used his expertise for some major expeditions.

santiBOG comments on Soccer tryouts

Prefiero DIM o Junior.
Saludos compañero!

santiBOG comments on Soccer tryouts

Go figure!

sad but true! Yup, everyday he looks more and more like our version of Chavez.

santiBOG comments on What is the correct name for Bogotá?

Peñalosa... I hope he's our next president.

santiBOG comments on Thank Yous

What is this, an awards ceremony?

santiBOG comments on Being a working actor in Bogota

Have your headshots taken here... it will probably be cheaper. I know a great European photographer who's worked with people in the business and probably has some great connections. PM me and I'll hook you up.

santiBOG comments on What is the correct name for Bogotá?

Platanito Peñalosa, during his administration, pushed a constitutional amendment through Congress. I don't recall exactly what year it was, but probably sometime between 2000 and 2001.

The (lame) idea to reinclude Santafe in the name was introduced and promoted by ex-Mayor Jaime Castro in the 1991 Asamblea Constituyente (although he later denied his responsibility). After years of debate about the pros and cons of this, Peñalosa quietly orchestrated the amendment and it passed. Curiously, in the '90s when Bogota became Santafe, other cities started using their colonial names (i.e. San Juan de Pasto, Cartagena de Indias, Santiago de Cali, etc.). I personally like our 'chibcha' names better and can't think of one legitimate reason for changing a city name back to what it was in the 16th century when we were under Spanish rule. How third-worldish of us!

santiBOG comments on What am I missing in Candelaria

I don't really know of any places in La Candelaria but now that you mention auditioning you may want to talk to Bill Rueda (ex-Elvis drummer), he has a little place in Villa de Leyva where he jams with other old-time rockers. Just a thought.

santiBOG comments on What is the correct name for Bogotá?

This topic has been covered to death: official name is Bogotá, D.C.

Bogotá a secas.

santiBOG comments on If you say Col"U"mbia, this is for you!!!!!!!

Santa Fe correct kernow62, the Santafe part of the name was officially dropped during the Peñalosa administration (thank god!)

santiBOG comments on Using North America DirecTv in Cali

"a U.S. Direct TV packaged signal will not work in Colombia. The footprint of the U.S. beamed signal does not reach this part of the world."

That's what I was told about the Colombian DirecTV years ago (supposedly Florida was not inside the footprint of the satellite). It was a lie... hundreds of Colombians installed Colombian DirecTV in Florida and it worked fine, the signal was strong.

santiBOG comments on Using North America DirecTv in Cali

Another way would be to hook up a SlingBox ($200) somewhere in the US where there's cable Tv or a satellite dish (i.e. a friend's house) and a broadband internet connection. You can then log on to your Slingbox from anywhere in the world (again, with broadband) and see live US TV on your computer. I hear it works well even though image quality can't possibly be as good as the real thing. But what the heck, it's your favorite shows and US local TV, live.

santiBOG comments on Using North America DirecTv in Cali

Right... I was going to say that, Vonage works beautifully here in Bogota with Cablenet.

santiBOG comments on Using North America DirecTv in Cali

I did just the opposite... I had a Colombian DirecTV box in my Florida home for over a year. It worked ok but often RCN would blackout shows (live soccer games). Curiously, the only DirecTV users that were blacked out where those in Florida (or elsewhere in the US). They later blocked Caracol TV alltogether (also to US users) . That tells me that DirecTV Colombia had a way of knowing where each user was located. By the way, when I bought the service I had to have it installed in my home in Bogota; if I had said that it was for 'export' they would not have sold it to me. So what I did after installation was leave the new dish on top of my building in Bogota and take the set-top box with me to Florida and I bought an extra dish on eBay.

That's what I suggest you do. Get the service (with local channels) for your home in NC and bring the black box to Cali. Get an installer to hook it up and aim it at the right satellite. there should not be any problem getting the signal. After all, (correct me if I'm wrong) aren't satellites on orbit right over the equator?

If you tell DirecTV USA that you want to hook it up abroad they will likely not sell it to you. Let me know how this goes please, I was thinking of doing just that, but with Dish Network (what can I say I miss Comedy Central).

santiBOG comments on buying a new car in miami and getting it to colombia

Justin what kind of problems will you run into???
Extremely high taxes (tariff, iva, etc.) Be prepared to pay up bro! I believe the S version is taxed at a higher rate too because (correct me if i'm wrong) it's a 2.0

santiBOG comments on Carlos Vives vs Green Day

Green Day vs Vives This sounds like one of those Celebrity Deathmatches that MTV used to have with some really odd combinations... Mariah Carey vs Jim Carey. jaja

santiBOG comments on "el chico district" in bogota

You'll be OK in El Chicó Best area in town. Plenty of restaurants and clubs a short taxi ride from Bogota Plaza.

santiBOG comments on una ayudita!!!!!!!!!!!!

santiBOG comments on una ayudita!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suerte.

santiBOG comments on Wedding reception in Bogota

Museo del Chico
Hacienda Fagua (near Chia)
Hacienda Marquez (near La Calera)
Gun Club

I highly recommend the two haciendas as they provide the best possible setting for a wedding of any size. Also, I'd stay away from the hotels.

santiBOG comments on ColombianoX No Longer with Us

everyone keeps saying how ColX supposedly hates the US. I don't remember one instance where he said anything bad about the US. On the contrary, I think he said good things numerous times.

santiBOG comments on ColombianoX No Longer with Us

What a joke... I remember a thread a few months ago where GIB said his goodbyes too. He said something about being tired of all the personal atacks. He also mentioned some bs about loving his country and how his family arrived from Germany or something... bla bla. Now I don't recall how the naziz related to PBH, but the point is that his absence lasted about a day.

I'm sure our 'friend' ColX is reading all of this and laughing. Now if you'll excuse me, I got to go, see y'all tomorrow.

santiBOG comments on HOTELS IN BOGOTA

Tequendama... the service may be great, but it's not the best location for a tourist (unless by "action" kevin67 meant drugs and cheap whores).

santiBOG comments on HOTELS IN BOGOTA

Lloyd's Apartasuites is a couple of blocks away from the 93rd street park. About $50 per night. I've stayed there myself and was very satisfied.

santiBOG comments on Warning to citzens about the mullet.

Dr Sanchez...

jaja, I loved your post. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Pedro El Escamoso. This character entered our collective memory circa 2000. Imitated by many, loved by all, Pedro sported the biggest mullet in prime time TV. Anyway, if you attempt to dig deep into this cultural phenomenon, I believe that he should be an important part of your analysis, so I suggest you start Googling.

The question now is: what came first to Colombia, the mullet or Pedro?

Now, ... the Pirulino dance deserves a post of its own!

santiBOG comments on ColombianoX No Longer with Us

Everyone, maybe this is a good thing.

It's possible that ColX is just taking a breather to reflect on his misguided patriotism... I'm pretty sure he'll return. I hope so, because this site is almost 100% gringo... that can't be good for Fair & Balanced discussion.

santiBOG comments on Uribe will start buying coca...

At last some creative thinking from the Uribe camp. Hoorray!

santiBOG comments on insurance

She won't be able to get (maternity) coverage now that she's pregnant, you know that. If you have insurance where you are, maybe you should wait until after she gives birth.

All Colombians are required to join a EPS (it's like an HMO). Payment is taken out of your paycheck on a monthly basis at something like 12% of salary. If you want a higher level of service, you can pay extra and join a regular health insurance plan like Humana, Bolivar or Cafesalud. These go for approx US$50 per month per person depending on your age and health.

santiBOG comments on Colombia, land of the popular politicians

I hope the court outlaws re-election and Peñalosa kicks Garzon's populist ass in the election. Wait, is garzon even allowed to run in 2006? Probably not, he's only been mayor for a few months.

santiBOG comments on U.S. slow on Colombia's arms aid
