Roberto99 comments on Cannabis and young people in Colombia

Marijuana was grown in the US Marijuana cultivation began in the United States around 1600 with the Jamestown settlers, who began growing the cannabis sativa or hemp plant for its unusually strong fiber that was used to make rope, sails, and clothing.
Until after the Civil War, marijuana was a source of major revenue for the United States. During the 19th century marijuana plantations flourished in Mississippi, Georgia, California, South Carolina, Nebraska, New York, and Kentucky.
Also during this period, smoking hashish, a stronger preparation of marijuana derived from the dried resin of the plant, was popular throughout France and to a lesser degree in the US.

Between 1850 and 1937 marijuana was widely used throughout United States as a medicinal drug and could easily be purchased in pharmacies and general stores. Recreational use was limited in the US until after the Mexican Revolution of 1910, when an influx of Mexican immigrants introduced the habit.

The Volstead Act of 1920, which raised the price of alcohol in the United States, positioned marijuana as an attractive alternative and led to an increase in use of the drug.
"Tea pads," where a person could purchase marijuana for 25 cents or less, began appearing in cities across the United States, particularly as part of the black "hepster" jazz culture.

By 1930 it was reported that there were at least 500 of these "tea pads" in New York City alone. During the Great Depression as unemployment increased, resentment and fear of the Mexican immigrants became connected to marijuana use.
Numerous research studies linked marijuana use by lower class communities with crime and violence.
In 1937, Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act which criminalized the drug. From 1951 to 1956 stricter sentencing laws set mandatory minimum sentences for drug-related offenses. In the 1950s the beatniks appropriated the use of marijuana from the black hepsters and the drug moved into middle-class white America in the 1960s.

Roberto99 comments on Boob Jobs - what do you think?

Just who are these for?? Maybe you must ask just who these new boobs are for?

I don't think she would be buying these addons if
no one she valued would be looking at them.
The payoff may be turning other men's heads other than
yourself, since you have expressed your feelings against
them.
If I were in this situation, I would re-evaluate just how
much I meant to her at this present time.
She seems to be hedging her bets, waiting for a
"better catch", or simply to protect herself
against the time when you decide to leave her.
(Or both, who can tell what she is really thinking.)

This may be due to the way she has been treated by other
men there in Colombia. I had conversations with some
women in Colombia. I think many have this nagging
feeling in the back of their minds that they will be on
their own again sometime in the future.
(This may be one reason why they keep slim and trim
longer than average.)

If I encountered a woman in Colombia who already
had the procedure, this alone would not put me off her.
(I really do not like fake breasts myself, but I don’t see
this as a big problem if she posessed the other more important
qualities I desire in a woman.)

As to fake breasts, you must understand that women have
ben lying to men and themselves for thousands of years.
Makeup, girdles, pushup bras, etc ad nauseum, and then
they complain and blame it on us men.
Remember the bra burning? That was definitely not about bras.

Can't believe it Your actually turning down a chance to live
in Colombia with a gorgeous woman, eh?
To each his own, eh?
Me? Colombia or die!!!! (or Colombia and die, hehehe)

The lure of long weekends to places like Santa Marta,
the street life with people walkin and talkin instead
of insulated in a metal box with wheels, the street
vendors, the fruit, the chance to actually be of personal
help to those less fortunate, all the cute places to dance
and eat, and of course the warm people I have met
have won me over.
Of course your young, me, I've been here way too long
without the culture that half of me yearns for.

I need you to use your lucky mojo on me -
you apparently have waaaayyy too much for
your own good. :)

I'm hoping the process is smooth and fast for both of you.

(By the way, I lived in Michigan for 25 years and we)
(always enjoyed your side of the border.)
(That is when we didn't get hassled by the US border)
(cops. Had a little longer hair back then and a friend)
(of mine was half AM. Indian, half Lebanese.)
(Picture both of us in the back seat of some old Dodge)
(with two lily white kids in front.)
(Shades of illegal entry were running through their minds.)
(But you can't disguise a North Midwest accent.. which I still)
(have despite my 20+ years here in Texas.)

Again, may you keep each other warm in arms of love
on those cold Canadian nights!!

Roberto99 comments on Any Experts on Colombian Women?

OK Forgive me HEAT All this is not directed towards you personally.
Believe me, some of your words are extremely
provoking for me.
(And of course you wouldn't understand because you are not)
(a man in my shoes. There are many of us around.)
I have not thought through nor properly processed every
emotion on this subject.
I guess you could categorize me along with the women
who have been cheated on by men and are extremely angry
against the whole male sex.
I'm working on it.
One thing I know, my destiny lies outside the US in
a Spanish speaking country, with a woman I can trust and
who is like my sisters/mother.

I really care deeply about the women in Colombia.
To this end I place my future at their doorstep.
Many wonderful women in Colombia have no future in marriage.
Their only crime is to be a little too old or heaven forbid
have one child (in or out of wedlock).

I would think that as a woman you would agree that if a US man
(old and wounded as he may be) found a way to recover some of his
youth and provided love, attention, marriage etc.. to a woman in Colombia with little chance of marriage you would be all for it.
Without the jabs at his precious male ego.
(Don't all women love to rationalize about our egos)
(like men should have no feelings.)

What's your answer??

Anyway I'm out of this discussion. It was fun and rewarding.

Let's get busy talking/arguing about some other aspect
of Colombia. I have much to learn. (So says Litost)

Roberto99 comments on Any Experts on Colombian Women?

Yes luckily i do not have such low regard for my american male counterpart. i am married to one and have many male american friends as well as four brothers and hold them in the highest esteem.

for obvious reasons i sure am glad you prefer colombian women!!!! talk about a provincial intellect!

signed yours truly,

God’s Perfect Gift and the Savior of Womanhood :)

p.s. whew! that felt good!

See! It really does bother some women!!!

Roberto99 comments on Any Experts on Colombian Women?

Your welcome why would you think that american women can’t stand that american guys are getting attention in colombia?
= Because I have talked to a few and most get
extremely irritated about men going abroad for wives/girlfriends.
(All except one woman from Sierra Leone. She agrees)
(whole heartedly that non US women are much better
(but she wants me to remain here in the US. Yechh!! I don’t.)
(But then again she believes all African men are worse.)

i have not noticed a “male shortage” here in the US? i’m sorry but that is just silly! (and kind of paranoid on your part.) perhaps you have been snubbed a couple times over by us?
= There you go, sounding like one of those!!!
(Sounds like a jab at my male ego?)
(No fight intended, let's talk)
= Every man/woman has been snubbed if they live in this
world. Not my problem.
(There must be something wrong with me if I'm searching for
something better/different than a US woman?)
Remember, I said sounds like. If this is not true, correct me!!

= Here is the most recent of my problems
Met a woman (not particularly beautiful, but fair)
with 4 children, divorced, alone and hungry for a
relationship. Spent 2 1/2 years with her.
Over that time she changed little by little to what
Rikito is talking about.
Children unruly – I worked with her (more like forced her)
to make changes. (Clean up bedrooms, not have sex with
some little tramp at 16, etc… things like that.
Spend quality time actually being a true father to her little
6 year old son. Her own mother
thanked me for the things I did for her children.)
Soon she is gaining weight rapidly. Anything she wanted to do I did.
Went to the hockey game (Don’t like hockey but I went), Went to some
mystery play, etc….. And all this with a smile on my face trying to make The best of each time we spent together.
You know whats next, right?? Things I wanted to do – nada.
We’re talking small walks at night, going to a restaurant I like, A REAL Biggie – taking her and her 3 boys fishing. Not on your life!!!
Soon I am responding to her requests, “I don’t want to but I will”.
Thought she would see the difference in my attitude compared to hers.
Nope!!!

Women like this have been my bane. I’m a nice guy. US women really don’t want nice guys. Nice guys finish last with US women.
(Remember my ex-girlfriend’s husband went from being Baptist to Wicca witch.)
(She forgave his infidelity with prostitutes, accompanied him to California where one women was having his baby aborted, etc……..)
(After 15 years of marriage he got out. Now I know why!!!!)
No more……..

Label me the same as women who choose men that beat them over and over.
Get the idea?
My sisters (remember Latina blood) are just the opposite, completely.
They give and give and give.
My problem has been my parents fooled me into thinking I’m white.
Big news!! I’m not. My mother never taught me Spanish, almost all my
friends, all my girlfriends have been white US native born.

My life is a changin........

Roberto99 comments on Any Experts on Colombian Women?

May not be their fault I truly believe that the attitudes of
a majority of women here in the US are
not their fault.
They have been fed propaganda from the
feminist front for so long they can't help
being affected.
I would never consider the kind of women I work
with for any relationship.
They have exposed their true character numerous times and it
is not pretty.

They have gained a *quasi-equality* with men here in
the US, but at what cost?
They have become all you say Rikito!!!!
(Not all mind you, my sisters are true gems.)
(But like me they have Latina blood, are easy going,)
(fun to be with, humble, caring, etc.........)

I truly think the US has become the Great Spoiler of
not only women but men, family and society in general.
No wonder the Iraqis want us out as soon as possible.

Roberto99 comments on Any Experts on Colombian Women?

Fantastic idea Except I personally would rather have that
exchange be US men for SA men.
I have my heart set on living in Latin America
for more reasons than the women.
Right now the winner is Colombia.
That could change but it seems dubious.

French? Please God nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooo!!!!

you were one of those!!

No way, nunca.
Just as my middle class Plano, Texas mexican
neighborhood can't come close to the real Mexico,
Miami is just a plastic blow up toy compared to the
real thing.
You have to embrace the crooked sidewalks, all the small
tiendas selling aguila, tamals, pony malta, and the
older men tending parked cars for a few pesos.
I even like putting my used papers in a basket rather than
flushing them down because this tells me I'm in
the correct place for me. My kinda of people whether I do
this in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru or Colombia.

feel the human warmth you live each day being in Colombia.
= This IS what it is all about on a daily basis.
The US can not compare. Maybe when I was born in 1955, but
NOW?? No way.

Plastic places for plastic people.
Get yourself to were the real thing is!!!

Roberto99 comments on Any Experts on Colombian Women?

Very amicable but everyone here can see right through
to the core.

i am not speaking on behalf of all 20 year-old colombianas. my perspective is from that of an american female. it's probably safe to say, that in general,

we (the beautiful & intelligent american female population) probably wouldn't be giving someone 20 years older the time of day.
= Colombianas are not intelligent or as beautiful as american females. Something must be wrong with them.

there are of course exceptions as you pointed out such as billy joel or that old guy that anna nicole smith married.

however i’m not sure if anna nicole smith falls into the intelligent category
= I think Anna was extremely intelligent at being a gold digger.

and i have no idea who would marry billy joel since most of his music sucks (IMO) though i guess he does have a talent with the piano and i’m sure has some serious “coin” as well.
= Yes, if I were a woman the quality of his music would
reign supreme as one of my reasons to marry him.
= American women never consider how they could economically
profit from their husbands like Colombianas do.

i do believe you when you say that you fellas are getting lots of nice “attention” there in colombia and i’m happy for you
= Not!!!! Women here in the US just can't stand it.

i was simply trying to knock him down to earth a wee-wee bit and to let him know that if he were anywhere else this would not be happening
= Exactly, knock the chauvenist pig down!!
He's ours (US) and if we can't keep him in his place no
other women can have him.

i am probably one of those hot chicks that you might dream about bedding down but found the thought of it highly humorous
= Sorry kid, I don't think Calipro cares one whit who you are
as long as you are from the US.
Please get over it and let others live their lives.

hunter, i don’t actually have a problem w/middle-aged men desiring, marrying, dating, or bedding young girls from cali as long as there is mutual respect involved
= You absolutely do have a problem or you would not be
posting these thinly veiled comments.

in all honesty, it was all in good fun
= Ditto kid.

Roberto99 comments on Mexico

any way they can How were the United States' actions to fulfill its perceived Manifest Destiny viewed by outside nations?
The attitude of Europeans and other observers was one not of fear of the United States, but a combination of lack of respect and a conviction that Americans were essentially hypocrites to talk about ideals then aim at expanding their land holdings.
This conviction developed, in part, out of American propaganda and publicity. The Americans did a great deal of talking and writing about liberty, but at the same time, they expanded the idea of Manifest Destiny. It was their destiny to expand across North America. The people poised in the way of that expansion, were aware of this, especially the Mexicans.
What were the driving forces behind the United States' quest for Manifest Destiny during the 19th century?
The term "Manifest Destiny" was, in part, an expression of a genuine ideal on the part of Americans. But it was also a justification, in that they wanted territory and needed an excuse or justification for a push into territory that they did not control.
More broadly stated, Manifest Destiny was a conviction that God intended North America to be under the control of Americans. It's a kind of early projection of Anglo-saxon supremacy and there's a racist element to it.
But there was also an idealistic element. It was very hard to measure the two, since it would differ from person to person. If you asked a person to define Manifest Destiny, he might tell you it is an ideal, or he might say, "Well, we want the land and this is the easiest way to justify our taking it."

Roberto99 comments on Mexico

Taking it back The United States had always added territory. For them, the conquest of the west was a natural thing, even at the cost of taking land belonging to another country.
Since the time when the 13 Colonies were established, they had set their eyes on the northern territory of New Spain. Why? Well, because it was so uninhabited and it seemed to be inviting them to take it. And so from the beginning, taking Texas became one of its goals.
I think that this expansionism was very obvious by the late 1830s and most of all by the early '40s. In the early '40s, countless books appeared on the subject of California emphasizing its richness, its mild climate, its beautiful and marvelous ports, which could be used in this Utopia that the United States had always had about trading with China. And so, the objective was very clear: California would be very present on the agenda in Washington.
This was clear from the moment Polk--a determined expansionist without any reservations--was elected. He was certain that he would do anything to reach his goals, and California was a priority for him.
Without a doubt, Polk's election to the presidency practically meant that there would be no other solution but the war, which Mexico tried to avoid because it did not have the resources to meet it head on
At first, basis for opposition to U.S. expansion was a feeling that it would contribute to the downfall of the nation. Later, the Northeast and East Coast felt they would lose power if the United States admitted more states in to the Union. Finally, the abolitionists in the North were afraid that the conquest of Mexico would lead to the incorporation of more slave territory into the United States.
During the course of the conflict with Mexico, the opposition to the war became focused upon the abolitionists movement and opposition to the expansion of slavery. There was, of course, some sympathy with the Mexicans and some pacifist opposition to the war itself as the casualty lists grew longer. But the abolitionist movement became a means of focusing this opposition into a powerful political movement that President Polk had to pay attention to.
Texas annexation seemed to be a part of the natural expansion of the United States -- a logical sequel to the Louisiana Purchase. It became more controversial, however, partly because of Mexican opposition to the annexation and partly because of the conviction in the North that Texas represented an expansion of slavery. John Quincy Adams, a member of the House of Representatives, even thought of the push for Texas annexation as a slaveholder's conspiracy, although I think historians have convincingly proven that there was no conspiracy.

Roberto99 comments on Mexico

Texas California etc... Texas Revolution
In the Texas Revolution of 1835-36, American colonists in Texas secured the independence of that area from Mexico and subsequently established a republic. Since the 1820s many settlers from the United States had colonized Texas; by the 1830s they far outnumbered the Texas Mexicans. Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attempted to reverse this trend by such measures as abolishing slavery and enforcing the collection of customs duties. The settlers rebelled (originally as part of a general federalist resistance to Santa Anna's Centralist government, which had overthrown the Mexican Constitution of 1824). Hostilities began at Gonzales on Oct. 2, 1835; the Texans repelled a Mexican force sent to disarm them and won subsequent victories.
In February 1836, Santa Anna, undiscouraged, led a large army across the Rio Grande; he was delayed, however, by the unexpectedly determined defense of the Alamo. Meanwhile, the Texans declared their independence from Mexico on Mar. 2, 1836, and organized a provisional government. Sam Houston led a successful retreat, but other insurgents were defeated and massacred in late March. Santa Anna pursued the rebels, overstretching his supply line and thus isolating his forces on San Jacinto Prairie. There, on April 21, he was routed by Houston and taken prisoner. Mexican troops then withdrew from Texas. The Republic of Texas (with its Lone Star flag) remained independent until 1845, when it became part of the United States.
Conquest of California
The American settlers in California had revolted against Mexican rule and established (June 1846) the Bear Flag Republic, under John C. Fremont, before news of the war reached them. On July 2, U.S. Commodore John Drake Sloat landed at Monterey. He proclaimed U.S. jurisdiction on July 7 and two days later occupied San Francisco. However, California was by no means under U.S. control. Mexican authority in California was divided between two rivals, Pio Pico in Los Angeles and Jose Castro in Monterey. Following the American landing, Castro headed south, apparently to attempt reconciliation with Pico and resistance to the United States. However, Commodore Robert Stockton, who replaced Sloat on July 23, sailed down the coast and landed troops under Fremont at San Diego and others near Los Angeles. Pico and Castro fled on August 10.
Heavy-handed martial law administration precipitated a revolt in southern California in September. Led by Jose Maria Flores, the rebels had expelled the Americans from Los Angeles and San Diego by the end of October. On Dec. 6, 1846, Kearny, en route to San Diego, met the rebels in an indecisive action at the Battle of San Pascual. Joining Stockton, who had arrived at San Diego, Kearny defeated a rebel band near Los Angeles on the San Gabriel River on Jan. 8-9, 1847. On January 13, Fremont received the final surrender of the rebels and signed the Treaty of Cahuenga. At the end of the month another American expedition, "half naked and half fed," reached San Diego. The remnant of 500 Mormon volunteers under Phillip St. George Cooke, it had marched from Utah to Sante Fe and across scorching deserts in southern New Mexico and Arizona.
After a bitter dispute among Stockton, Fremont, and Kearny, the last established a provisional government in California. With California secure, the U.S. Navy attempted the conquest of Mexican ports on the Pacific, capturing Mazatlan (Nov. 11, 1847), Guaymas (Nov. 17, 1847), and San Blas (Jan. 12, 1848).

Roberto99 comments on travel in colombia

I've been through the airport in Bogota twice
with limited Spanish and it was a walk in the park.
My only problem was in my own head.
My experience with airports is DFW, very large indeed.
Although the Bogota airport is small, it was also very pleasant.
It has a few souvenir shops, small restaurants where you
can buy filled empanadas, cokes, aguila etc and also a couple
of shops for dulces before you find your taxi or continue your journey.

Coming back from Bucaramanga I totally forgot I could obtain
a waiver for half the exit tax. Actually I was waiting in line
when the greeter (not sure what to call her) for Avianca tried to
inform me I needed to pay the exit tax. (In spanish of course)
While I was struggling to understand and answer her questions she
realized I did not speak Spanish well. (The accent is a little hard for me)
She then proceeded to help me by speaking in English and directing me
to the counter to obtain the waiver. She also guarded my luggage
and space in the waiting line until I came back.
There is no reason to avoid the Bogota airport in my opinion.
I think there will always be someone behind the counter who will
be able to help you in English.

Don’t let the media image of Colombia play with your mind,
you will rob yourself of a wonderful experience.

Also, I can absolutely, unequivocally, irrevocably, full-heartedly recommend Frank (Francisco) Leal in Bucaramanga as a guide and Spanish teacher.
If you want to visit Colombia for the first time but you are concerned about safety visit Bucaramanga and stay with Francisco.

Francisco, his mother and their maid Yolanda totally pampered me as if I was a member of their family. I wanted to lose weight but after 1 ½ weeks I found I needed to reduce my intake. I couldn’t get in to one pair of slacks that previously fit very comfortably.
Francisco also has very gracious and wonderful friends who showed me
around the city and taught me English. Mariclara was a gem and also knows English fairly well.
The people in Bucaramanga are friendly and there is no fear whatsoever.
Every night (especially on the weekend) I observed teenagers hanging out and walking around the city doing what teenagers do around the globe.
READ MY LIPS!!! NO FEAR in Bucaramanga!!!

I convey the above message with ambivalence. On one hand I feel
very selfish and want to keep this secret all to myself to keep
Colombia pristine and to prevent it from becoming a playground for
Americans/Europeans. On the other hand I definitely feel that Colombians like Francisco and his friends deserve to prosper by hosting tourists to his wonderful country.

What one resource above all others is the the most precious in Colombia?

La Gente!!! Por cierto!!!!!

Got so worked up I forgot my usual style editing in

Okay, I know next to nothing about Colombia, but it should be
obvious to anyone with an IQ higher than a snake's belly
that the Rich in Colombia have always been the problem, are
the problem now, and will always be the problem. AMEN.
Put Venezuelan rich in there too!!

They are so greedy they would rather see peons massacred,
wonderful young men serving their country blown up by explosives,
children kidnapped and held for ransom in oil barrels than to allow
the poor just a bit of the pie.

(Same old same old as in the Mexican/French/Russian revolutions. Didn't take long for the rich to gain control again did it!!)
Ya Ya, heard it all before. All their doing is trying to get
ahead, developing their country, suckin parasites.

New Russian billionaires breathing the same air as little old women selling their old moth eaten furs and knickers on the street for a few rubles. (What you say comrade??????)

Capitalism/Communism is just another word for powerful greedy people run amok!!!

The US/Europe stumbled upon a obvious law of nature. The most successful parasite does not kill it's host.

Had to be pure chance. Possibly a little 666.. Whaddya think....)

Many jobs are leaving the States ya'llll. Get ready to put your order for a Big Mac over the internet to someone in China/Vietnam/Cambodia. They will route it to the screen via tcp/ip (or that there new fangled thing, voip) if they can save one damn penny.

Ecuador and Guatamala have an enormous number of Spanish Schools advertising on the net. Some very good, some not so good.
With only one tip on a school in Medillin and no experiences about this school, I thought I would get a few people here to share their experiences.
There must be some people who have studied in Medillin that would like to share. Maybe Medillin just isn’t the right place to study.

Furthermore Bogotá is not just 'a big cold city' but a clean orderly place with much to offer.

No doubt, but I would like another experience like the one I
had with the marisco selling family in Guanauato.
Cozy, humble, basic, down to earth peons (like me).

I’d like nothing more than to live on a ranch close to a small
pueblo where the entertainment is listening and dancing to the son’s and daughter’s of the town play guitar and sing. I’d like to get
as far away from the imperialistic, war-monging, mega advertising,
neo-liberal society of the US/Europe as I can get.
(This is probably just a dream. What me a romatic? Nah)

My searches didn’t turn up much. (Not raggin on this site, I expect
others have different priorities than I do. Novia/os, partying etc…)
