Barrio money lender story

I don't know if this made local news in Villavicencio or in Bogota - probably not. But it was a pretty interesting, but grim story that the inlaws told us last week. A cop in Villavicencio's wife borrowed a certain amount of money from a street lender / loan shark. The cop didn't know about the debt and the wife didn't pay back the loan. After a certain amount of time, the cop ends up dead in his own house with his throat cut ear to ear. The woman had her throat slashed also, but survived. Th ...

Passed out and the family is singing

Here is what a few female family members do if you are passed out during a party in Colombia. Note*, he didn't wake up: Nor, to this day, does he have any idea he was sang to. He is a costeno, the girls are llaneras, his wife is sitting next to him. I thought it was a pretty cool little video of real life in Colombia during a happy time. ...

Scheduled Consulate Interview Dates

Recently, a friend asked how to find scheduled visa interview dates at the US embassy in Bogota on the Internet. Last year when I was anticipating the upcoming K1 interview for my fiance, I found it: but it was pretty difficult to track down. The beneficiaries will be notified by mail of the scheduled interview dates and times, but this Internet link will give those who need it, more time to plan. http://bogota.usembassy.gov/iv-appointments.html ...

Octavio Mesa

Here is a nice Christmas song for all of you Octavio fans. ...

Short term rentals in Villavicencio

The Mrs. and I will probably be going to Colombia in February. Does anybody know of furnished apartments in Villavo for rent for a 2 week period of time? I can't afford the Don Lolo for 14 days - and the wife refuses to stay at the little hotel I used to use called the Hotel Portal del Llano in the centro. Staying with relatives is not an option. Mom in law now lives in a tiny 2 bed house in a pueblo called Porfia, cousins, aunts, etc - same situation. Tiny houses, already filled to the brim wit ...

Footage from an AC 130 gunship

Well, in another thread, I was tempted to post this, but I decided it was more suitable for the "off topic" section. Anyway, here is some footage of an AC 130 gunship, based at Hurlburt Field down the road from me. Actually, the footage was filmed from the plane while on a mission in Iraq. The guys saw some insurgents planting a roadside bomb and measuring distances in Iraq at night. It is an older video that I saw originally back in '03. But maybe you guys haven't seen what "Spooky" can do from ...

Why do dogs?

OK, this is about "off topic" as you can get. Why the hell do dogs roll and rub into another dogs excrement? I Googled it ... no luck. My dog got away from Mrs. RJ about an hour before I got home today. When I found him, he had dog caca rubbed all into his fur. I have also seen dogs that are keen for rolling in rotting material, especially dead animals. What's up wit dat? ...

What are the "conditions" of the conditional Permanent Residency?

I just spent a half hour Googling the topic on this site. I just can't find the answer to my main question. Today we received the congratulations letter from USCIS that says my wife's AOS was approved, and to expect the permanent residency card in the mail soon. Once Mrs. RJ has this permanent residency card, can she travel to Colombia? Or, since I think it is considered conditional permanent residency, do we have to send in forms and apply for the permission to travel? (can't remember the f ...

Tejo

I have seen a few threads that mentioned tejo in the past. But I have talked to a few PBHers that have never heard of tejo and wanted to learn more about it. Here is a link to a quick explanation of what tejo is in Colombia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tejo_(sport) Tejo to Colombians might be comparable to bowling to gringos. It is a working man's sport. It involves drinking, is social, women are welcome, but it is often a "drinking with the boys" type of night out. Generally, tejo is free, but ...

Another scam

I just found this in my Email inbox. It came from a PBH "member". It is obviously a scam, but just thought I would share. Surely there isn't anybody foolish enough to fall for this, but just in case, be warned. (This message was sent from the PBH website by another user. The user does NOT have access to your email address directly, but if you reply to this message, they will see your email address. You can turn of messaging in your account settings.) From Chris and Vivia Deare ...

Making the move

It is no secret to those that know me here that I have thought about moving to Colombia eventually. I am not sure where to start the process. I figured obtaining a visa first would be the logical first step. I have been to the Colombian embassy website, and I am still confused. To get a spousal visa, it appears I would need to get married in Colombia first, then apply for the visa here in the US. (We are already married, but here in the US) Some of the other visas seem obtainable, but what would ...

Where is the drug guy?

I am just wondering where the "I got drugged in a nightclub, haven't been the same since" guy is. We haven't seen the same post from him in 1.5 months. Could he have finally died, and put us out of our misery? He posts under a different handle everytime, so I can't say what his name is / was. ...

Convince my parents

I got married to my Colombian wife last March. Because of the visa time issue, we just got married in the courthouse here in the US. Well, we want to get married in a church in Colombia relatively soon. (Within the next year) The inlaws are very excited and will probably arrange everything. The problem is, my parents are nervous about traveling to Colombia. What I am asking, is for reassurances from others that it is not unsafe to travel to Colombia for a wedding. The wedding will be in Villavic ...

Why are you back Pow Wow?

Ok Pow Wow, you basically dared Tinto to ask why you are back posting here on PBH. I'll take the bait and ask it: Why are you posting again on PBH? I am curious, especially after your grand exit that you publicly announced. ...

Jealousy

I'll try and get right to my question. Has anybody else noticed that Colombianas get very jealous of their friends, if their friend is involved with a nice guy? Examples would be the jealous friend trying to sabotage the other's relationship with the guy. Methods include the jealous friend attempting to flirt and even sleep with the other friend's man. Other methods might include talking trash about the guy behind the couples back to other mutual friends and even family? Is this very common? And ...

Mechas

I want to set up my own little backyard tejo area. The only thing I can't figure out is how to make mechas, the 2 inch folded paper triangles that explode when hit. It has to be a simple recipe. Also, where can somebody buy a tejo - the actual round piece of steel - in the US? Does anybody play tejo in the Miami area? ...

What does this mean?

My last night - the last time I was in Villavicencio last month; I drank with a bunch of Costenos. They got a kick out of teaching me to say, "mune que burro". My wife is literally getting upset with me for seperating those word(s). She says it is one word. Anyway, what the F*** does that mean? Munequeburro or mune que burro? Everybody got a laugh out of me saying it. What was I saying; or what is the slang meaning? ...

Attention moderators

Why can't I go past Patricia's Neighborhood post? I want to browse posts that were before the Pat's Hood post, but there are 3 pics that you can't see, and then you can't go to the next page or next post. ...

Taking booze out of Colombia to the US

I had just a quick question. I have accumulated a small collection of bottles of rum and aguardiente to take back to the US with me. I leave in 10 days. I understand I can take up to 2 bottles, no problem, but after that there is a tax? Assuming this is correct, do you just pay the "tax" at customs in the US airport after showing them your declarations? Thanks for your info. Rob ...
