riomagdalena comments on Study: Latinos bring view of blacks

Black and from Colombia Boy do I know how he feels and you. I am a native of Suba and have a medium brown complexion and the other week, en mi casita, here in N.C. a "true" Colombiana curled up her brow when the owner told her that I was a Colombiana too. She just couldn't believe that I, a latinegra, could be from Colombia because I'm not pasty white. I wanted to flip her off and cuss her out for being so friggin' ignorant. It's bad enough we get alot of BS from el gringos, but to get it de sus gente....well that really stings. Tu sabe?

riomagdalena comments on Suba

Suba Home Mi gentes,
Does anyone have any photos of Suba?? I haven't been back to my birthplace in many, many, many years!

riomagdalena comments on Wife not allowed to leave Cali - Help!

This also happened to me back in 2001. I was prevented from leaving (without much explaination) when I went to the airport. It was because of a mistake, but DAS had me pay a fine and told me i had 48 hrs to leave.

I ended up leaving inside of 24 hrs and I was very glad! That happened to me on Sept 9, 2001. Can you imagine me trying to get into the U.S. after Sept. 11th?!

I wish you luck and will pray for your wife.

riomagdalena comments on Adive for a woman traveling alone in Colombia?

Choco region or ???? Question:

I would like to know where the darker complexed (skinned) women in Colombia are from or where one is likely to find them.

I am talking about chicas that "look like" moranas or negritas. I once had someone say that darker Colombians livesmostly in Cali oe MEdellin and the Choco region. Is this accuarate? Why in these areas? My abuelita is a negrita and I believe she was raised in Letica or maybe the Choco region.

riomagdalena comments on Learning Spanish in Colombia

El Choco How do we pronounce El Choco???? I have heard others pronounce it:
CHOWCO CHOCHO. LOL

What's the proper pronounciation?

Also, please tell me as much about this part of Colombia. How far is it from Medellin and Bogota?

The population there...is it mostly afro colombians or what? Is this a very poor region?

Tell me about living there, jobs, etc.

Thanks so much.

Alisita

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Dan Isn't that awful how they play around like that?! Anyway, how on earth would one man manage to "date" 2 different women in the same city and not get caught?! That's so nasty first off, but second it's a dangerous game. All you do is create bad karma for yourself. *sigh*

riomagdalena comments on Step by Step process to get a passport and visa to leave Colombia

Response to your responses :-) To answer Alex question: No, I would never marry a military man (any man) just to get a visa. I am a devout Catholic woman and cherish and respect the sanctity of marriage. Doing something like that starts your marriage off on a bad foot and it is bound to fail.

I have a friend that asked me these question so I decided to post them here and ask you all.

Mr. Babillas? LOL LOL LOL No, I have hung out there though. Most of the American military men I met there were total creeps! LOL I wouldn't have married them if I was blind, starving, desperate, one step away from being deported and hadn't had a man in 10 years and they were willing to pay me mucho dinero!! LOL Does that answer your question? LOL Besides.....I like Marines and Delta Force Commandos....the real tough guys. ROTFLMAO Just kidding! LOL LOL

Gator: So she should apply for her Colombian visa then apply for a visa to get into the U.S.?

Thanks to all of you for your responses. i appreciate the direction.

riomagdalena comments on my wife is increasingly aggressive and is hard to live with

Questions abpout Colombian women and traditions Since the question was asked about how Colombian women are....can someone tell me if some of these things are true?

Colombian women are

very emotional.............very docile (la paiasas), hard working; can become violent if pushed, very feminine, very private (doesn't like outsiders to know of what goes on in the house, etc)

Do any of you know of Colombian wedding and childbirth traditons? What about how Colombian women traditionally run their households (i.e. dinner, breakfast, raising the kids, caring for their husbands, etc)?

Thanks a million!

riomagdalena comments on Learn to speak Spanish

Free translation sites and the difference in the language I have seen a lot of spanish english translation sites but I know that there is a bit of a difference in the spanish that Colombians speak versus Boricuas, Dominicans, etc. It's not extremely different, but a little. Do any of you know of any free sites that are able to translate english into colombian spanish?

I noticed above someone spoke of learning the basic slangs and all. LOL That's cool and good to know.

How would one answer the phone in Colombia? I mean here I say, "quien" when someone knocks at the door. When I answer the phone I say "hola."

riomagdalena comments on Colombian Women please help, Culture barrier!

This too shall pass I don't believe you are doing this to be malicious or anything. I think it's harmless to you. Unless you're telling extremely private or embarrasing things I think this will eventually pass once you two talk it over and iron out boundaries. For the most part us Colombian women are very private so this is likely what is bothering her. Just assure her that you love and respect her and therefore you would never do anything to intentionally embarass or humiliate her. This will help smooth things over with her. Good luck and God bless.

riomagdalena comments on Colombian Women please help, Culture barrier!

I do this for my American boyfriend, but if he did not treat me right I would be on the first flight back to Colombia myself! LOL

riomagdalena comments on Question about Colombian Spanish

Castillian Spanish....... Can any of you tell me some spanish words that Colombians use but that Puerto Ricans or Mexicans would not use? Like: How are you, What do you mean, I care for you, My name is.......words like that. I have heard that many Colombians speak Castillian spanish. Is this true?

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Closer than... closer than where? Are you talking about gringos period or Marines (military men)?

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Dan/Melgar Dan, How do you pronounce Melgar? Is this where the Embassy is located too? I read in one of the posts that one would likely find CIA (I think) agents in Melgar. Is that true?

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

UtopiaCowboy LMAO!!! You're funny, amigo!

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Kim/Grunts Eating with their hands and speaking in grunts, huh? LOL LOL Now that's wild!! I think they would have scared me. My brothers sometimes eat like they're in a marathon! I think it's from being in the field all the time and having to eat so fast. ????

Yes, I have a lot of fun... wen they're not standing over my back scaring and interrogating every gentleman I meet. LOL I appreciate their protectiveness becuase it scares off the men with "bad" intentions. You know what I mean? They know how my brothers are and know they will not tolerate anyone treating me with anything less than respect.

I guess with all that the grunts do their tough image goes a long way. I thought all grunts were either emotionally unstable, desensitized big burly, mean-looking men. LOL The one i just met is not very tall, very laid back, down-to-earth and soft spoken. Go figure.

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Hola Dan I didn't know we had an Army base in Colombia! So you really think you'll get out, huh? Is your girlfriend a Colombiana? Did you meet her there (at the base) or in Bogota? How long have you been stationed there? Have you met her familia? It sounds like (from what I have read in your posts) you're a good guy. I mean, the type of man that still has good morals and values. Those types of men are really, REALLY hard to find these days. Hope this isn't too many questions or rather I'm not being too nosey. :-)

Alicia

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Kim/Marines Really? Yes, I married a Marine once upon a time. I do love them. LOL I have recently met a Marine here and he is a grunt. I always thought grunts were dangerous and violent so I avoided them. He's actually very laid back. My brothers always tell me to avoid Marine grunts, but they're just being protective as always. :-)

So what was your MOS in the Marines? Did you like it? I have marine friends that tell me that I'm more motivated than some actual Marines they know. LOL I love the Marines. My laptop has these stickers on it:

"Marine Sister"

"USMC... When it absolutely positively has to be destroyed overnight"

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Dan/Mil and gringos Wow Dan you work with the military? Great! I know what you mean about avoiding certain Gringos. I feel that way myself. Some are loud, obnoxious and very ignorant at times. Not all... just some.

What's the name of the base? Is it a Navy base or an Army post or a Marine Camp? So the top brass restricts the troops from going to certain areas in Bogota? I guess that is smart considering the fact that they could get hurt. Are the military guys you work with really that bad? I know some of the Marines around here get loose and wild when they've been drinking. But for the most part they're ok.

Thanks again, Dan.

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Elaborating for Caslug Also, I always wondered where I would likely find alot of my relatives coming from since all of us are brown and light brown complexed. I know my familia en Humacao, Puerto Rico come from Ponce, Mayaguez y Bayamon and mostly everyone from there is the same complexion I am. I just wondered where I'd find my fellow Colombianas with the same color skin. :-)

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Dan/Colombia Questions/Thank you! 300,000? How many american dollars is that, Dan? BTW, thank you so much. You answered quite a bit for me!! :-)

So I guess they do their training like down near the rainforests and all? I'm assuming Popayan?

I read the other posts about Melgar? Is that a heavily populatedarea for Americanos? Is the cost of living there reasonable? Really... leche in BAGS??? LOL Doesn't the leche leak out? What about eggs? Do you buy those at a market or from a farm or what?

I know there are alot of sidewalk vendors. Do any of them sell fruit and veggies or meat? Is meat expensive there?

Thanks alot again, Dan!!!! :-)

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Stereotype, etc/kernow62 Yes, this happens here at Camp Lejeune alot!! Married men posing as "separated" or single or divorced men. See, to them separated means they either just haven't seen their wives or girlfriends or fiancee's since breakfast or they live in separate states and don't see them very often. Ay mi dios!!! It's sickening. I guessfor some men their significant other has to be pasted to their forehead or glued to their hip in order for them to respect their committment!
I wonder what makes them do such terrible things!!

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

Dark Skin Colombians:What I'm "getting" at. I ask because I want to know if I'd "blend" in or "fit" in with the locals. Here, when people see me upon first glance they assume I am a black americano. But then they hear the accent and assume I am Dominicana o Belizean. LOL So you're saying there are dark (brown) complexed Colombianas likely in Cartagena versus Bogota?
Thank you for your help.

Alicia

riomagdalena comments on Peter (others too): Questions about Bogota

why military guys? I just have a "thing" about men in uniform. LOL 4 of mi hermanos are American military: 2 Marines, 1 Army & 1 Navy.

Bogota Alcohol... Do they have a time in Bogota(like in the states) when they stop serving alcohol?

riomagdalena comments on Need Help with exchanging Dollars to Pesos

Pesos vs American Dollar 2 pesos are... what amount of dollars in american money/

So for a nice meal, drinks and a taxi I'm looking at spending what amount of money in american dollars?

Let's say i wire my friend there $500 american dollars. How much in pesos would that be for her and would that go a long way towards helping her buy food, clothes (decent stuff) and pay rent?

riomagdalena comments on

Myths about Colombia Ok we've all heard people say that Colombia is famous for coffee y cocaine, right? We all know there's so much more to Colombia than those 2 things. Recently my freind from class was telling me that she heard that the cali cartel is alive and kicking and running things in Colombia: causing terrorist attacks, etc. Is this true? I thought that after Escobar was killed that was the end to all the cartels. True or false?
