rhydewithdis comments on Cost of living (trying to figure out fair amount for child support)

OP - just one thing to remember in your calculations. When you are supporting them, you should support them figuring in COP terms, not USD. If you commit to sending 300k COP or 900k COP, then that is your commitment. You need to figure it out yourself how you are going to manage the risk of currency fluctuations. I would say one thing you could get out of this yourself is Colombian citizenship. At the very least you have something to show for all this drama. From an administrative standpoint, you should open up an account with Citi. Direct deposit or automatically transfer the set monthly amount you have determined from a different account INTO the Citi account. Give your baby's mama the corresponding Citi ATM card and PIN so she can withdraw the funds from one of the many Citi branches throughout Bogota. - you will have NO ATM fees when you withdraw from a Citi ATM ($1.50 otherwise) - foreign conversion fee will cost 2%, which increases to 3% beginning August 2008. You can probably find something better than this, take a look here: http://www.flyerguide.com/wiki/index.php/Credit/Debit/ATM_Cards_and_Foreign_Exchange#ATM.2FCheck.2FDebit_Cards_.28used_at_ATM.29

rhydewithdis comments on Where should I live in Medellin?

at gringokid you were getting majorly ripped off. You can get a 2bdrm/2bth apt in Poblado for that amount (unfurnished of course). in El Estadio, 1 million pesos should get you a 250sq mt house.

rhydewithdis comments on Retiring from gringolandia

Bogota is like Mexico City now it seems. Or even Sao Paulo. To live well, you need to have liquid assets of 500kusd and income of at least 3-5k month. Caveat is if the dollar gets any worse, you are SOL.

rhydewithdis comments on Where should I live in Medellin?

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrios_de_Medellín http://www.metrodemedellin.org.co/media/images/contenidos/mcab09.jpg My honest opinion would be to look into living along any of the stops where the metro is. More specifically, I like the Estadio/Floresta area. You can probably find a nice sized one bedroom apartment for around 500k month. You might have to put down six months if you have no signer AND this does not include utils AND it will not be furnished. You're ride over to Poblado via the Metro would be 10-15 minutes.

rhydewithdis comments on How much to live "moderately comfortably" in Colombia?

OP, you can do it quite easily if you are willing to live frugally. $2kUSD gets you about 3,600,000 pesos/mth (at 1800/$). For example, you can live in a nice section of Medellin (let's say Laureles, which is estrata 5, considered a very good nabe) and get a decent size two bedroom apartment with security for about 700,000/mth unfurnished. With all your utils and cable Internet, you are going to be looking at 950k/mth. Furniture is a one-time shot, but you can probably furnish your entire place with second-hand furniture for less than $8kUSD. That still leaves you with 2,650k. Even if you eat out three meals a day, at very pricey places (15k for breakfast, 15k for lunch, 25k for dinner, you are looking at 1,650. That leaves you with 1,000 pesos a month. Health insurance will probably run you about 300k pesos a month. Taxis, another 300k pesos a month. Cell phone would be another 100k a month. This is living much better than most Colombians live. If you are willing to downgrade your accomodations a bit, and willing to eat more like the locals, you could easily make it and have money left over each month. Go for it!

rhydewithdis comments on thinking of moving colombia. How do I find work???

Chances of you landing a sales job are slim to none if your Spanish isn't fluent. Even if your Spanish is fluent, you would have a tough time. If you work for an American company in Sales, maybe you can get a transfer to Colombia. My friend worked for a market data provider in Sales and put in for a transfer to Bogota and got it. He took a 35% pay cut, but it was worth it for him to be able to live in Colombia closer to his family. Good luck.

at harvardexec, and what was your assessment?

rhydewithdis comments on Antioquia Ski Team? Is there really such a thing?

I would've asked the guy, but he lost a couple of huge hands (>2million pesos) and stormed out!

rhydewithdis comments on

I would say as long as you can find a hustle to keep you busy 4-6 hours a day, you will be good in Medellin. I personally could not life there without some type of job. Fortunately I can work remotely (most of the time) for my current employer and I easily end up with 5-8 hours of work a day.

rhydewithdis comments on What are the best 3 Hotel/Resorts/Casino's in Medellin, and why?

Hands down, the Portofino is the best casino right now in Medellin. It is indeed strange that a Holiday Day Inn (EXPRESS!) anchors this development. The high rollers mainly play there. They will blow 4-10 million pesos within a few hours easy. The food here sucks. They don't serve beer, but they do serve hard liquor (rum, whiskey and of course arguardiente). My buddy took them for 1.4 million pesos on his last night in town at Roulette (he hit his # straight up with 40mil). The best looking casino staff (women) are at Rio Casino in San Diego--this casino is probably also the most fun on the weekends. There are no hotels here. The other major casino is in Centro, called Casino Caribe. Good times here - I took them for 2million pesos the other night at Blackjack (of course I gave it all back over the next several days at the casinos and blowing pesos on other fun stuff). The only two other casinos that have table games are Havana Casino which is tiny and connected to Oviedo Mall and 24 hr Casino a few blocks down on Av Poblado. No casino in Medellin compares to the larger casinos in Panama. No casino in Medellin has an attached/affiliated hotel property (i.e. no comp rooms). To also answer you question, Medellin is a city so there are no "resort" type hotels in the city.

rhydewithdis comments on What happened to the guy that used to post his grocery bill from Colombia?

rhydewithdis comments on ROBBED AT KNIFE POINT IN BOGOTA! THIS COUNTRY IS DANGEROUS!!

Sry to hear what happened to you. Honestly though, they way I see these overweight gringo sex tourists wandering around here, completely aimless, drunk beyond belief thinking this is Disney World, need a wake up call and something like this to happen to a few of them so they realize that this ain't Kansas.

rhydewithdis comments on

You MAYYYY think that looking gringo gives you an advantage, but it only does so with a certain crowd (namely pre-pagas). I've dated enough Colombianas and most of them that have friends on both sides of the fence (i.e. regular, educated professional women vs. plastica pre-pagas) do not like to be associated with gringos. Why? Well they don't want people to look at them as if they are either a) a pre-paga, or b) a gold digger. Normal Colombianas that are well-educated professionals (estrata 4-6) have a ton of pride and are really concerned about their image. You should be happy you won't stick out.

rhydewithdis comments on ¿ Cuánto costará y cuándo llegará el iphone 3G a Colombia?

LilaM, good calculation, but you forget to note that AT&T is subsidizing the cost of the iPhone and requiring all people to sign 2-year contracts at a minimum of $59.99/month. The cost of the iPhone without any contracts in the US (if it is even possible to buy it this way), will be AT LEAST $199 $175 (early termination fee from the 2-yr contract) = $374. From what I understand, AT&T is planning on increased the ETF to $250 for the iPhone (which is a departure from their across the board ETF of $175). Even if you do get the iPhone in the US, it will be several months at best before the hacking communities unlock it. In Colombia, more than likely ONLY Comcel will offer the iPhone, also with a similar 2-year contract with the phone costing around 400mil COP. The monthly plans will be expensive, because I am sure 3G data rates here are very pricey. For those that want the new 3G iPhone to use in the normal pre-paid fashion via recarga every time you run out of minutes, you will be waiting quite a while (at least until Oct-Dec).

rhydewithdis comments on Taking a taxi in Medellin

I know a great guy that can pick you up from the airport. His name is Juan Carlos 311 303-8435. Speaks perfect English. He won't rip you off either (55k-60k). Well worth the extra $5-$9 taking an unknown taxi.

rhydewithdis comments on RECENTLY DEPORTED

Sorry to hear about your though break. One option for you, depending on the extent of your handicaps would be to drive a taxi. You will make the normal money driving a taxi, but with your English skills, you could market yourself to non English speakers offering things like tours, airport pick-ups, drop-offs, etc. With respect to what Philly mentions, you could "appear" as if you a US-based Internet user if you filter all your Internet traffic to a "proxy" in the US. Some ISP's offer this service. If you have someone in the US with a high-speed connection at home, you could buy them a router that you can install the open source firmware, DD-WRT on (very simple to do). Tell them to use that router at home, and then proxy all your traffic through that router using these instructions: http://jstrassburg.blogspot.com/2006/01/howto-tunneling-http-over-ssh-with-dd.html Last but not least (and this is what I've seen others in your situation end up doing), you can always look into getting a job as a match-maker (i.e. pimp) to the thousands of horny extranjeros that visit Colombia for these purposes. Obviously, you would be exploiting an unfortunate situation, but then again, if it isn't you doing this, someone else will readily step in....

Mitch, thanks yea I've seen Boris spin several times in NYC (I live in NYC). At Crobar a few years back and I also went to see him when I was in Amsterdam. Awesome times. Drop me a PM or the info here on the connects and/or where I can purchase the tickets in advance.

LORE, I am in MDE now. I might go to Ibague for the festival. My friend told me about this" "te cuento que en estos momentos celebrando el san juan y san pedro el Dpto del tolima esta de fiesta hoy hay desfile con las reinas de los municipios, hoy es el desfile departamental y el domingo es el desfile nacional"

Mitch what time do you think is he going to be spinning (after 330am?)? Any connects on getting in? What the cover will be, etc.?

rhydewithdis comments on medellin clubs

If you are looking for a nice lounge, I recommend Tropical Lounge at Palmitas in Las Palmas on Av. Las Palmas. I was there last night with some friends for drinks and it was a nice chill-out spot, beautiful views (get there an hour before sunset and hang out for a few hours!). Another 'muy chevre' spot that is new is Cartagena, a lounge/club I believe right in Poblado. I've driven by a few times and it looks really nice - I'll check it out later this week and let you know how it goes.

rhydewithdis comments on medellin clubs

Yea Wild is definitely a hot spot. You can get whatever you want from any of the waiters to "enjoy" the electronica music. Again last night at Pharmacy cops came in around 3AM and checked all the patrons for guns/drugs. Party died out after that.... Carnival and La Clarita are both cool spots too. I hit up Carnival on Fri night, but I was beat and bailed at 430am.

rhydewithdis comments on medellin clubs

Also, I was at Wild in Itagui on Saturday. It's an after hours club that starts to pick up around 3:30AM and goes till 9AM.

last night I was at Delux (previously named Deja Vu) and Pharmacy. Great times at both. Hip-hop/dancehall/reggaeton music.

rhydewithdis comments on Soccer Schedule

romy, you're link doesn't work. Anyone know the schedule this weekend in Medellin? If there is a game, I would love to get tickets and go.

rhydewithdis comments on Parque Bolívar, Medellín

Parque Bolivar at night turns into Grand Theft Auto. Transsexual hookers two blocks away. Dozens of glue sniffing drug addicted adolescents that will want you to "regalame" 500 pesos to get a smoke or buy some more glue. Practically every bar in the 7-9 block radius turns into a brothel. You'd be safer off staying in Harlem. Or the South Side of Chicago. I'm 100% serious.

rhydewithdis comments on So I am kinda of dissapointed of Queens and Roosevelt Avenue.

I guess where I am confused is who ever said that Jackson Heights was little Colombia? Jackson Heights (and I have there for over 20 years) has always been a melting pot for many ethnicities, weighted by mostly Central and (Northern) Southern Americans who call it home. Foodies throughout New York City have long considered Roosevelt Ave to be one of the cities crown jewels. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/31/realestate/31cover.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

rhydewithdis comments on More Immigrants saying "Hasta La Vista USA" & Going Back Home

GREAT article on this same exact subject; http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/04/nyregion/04brazilians.html? That decision — to give up on life in the United States — is being made by more and more Brazilians across the country, according to consular officials, travel agencies swamped by one-way ticket bookings, and community leaders in the neighborhoods that Brazilian immigrants have transformed, from Boston to Pompano Beach, Fla.

rhydewithdis comments on Help: is anyone coming to Medellin next week?

at rocinante, I don't mind at all... all-in was $713.30 booked directly on their website about a week ago. I had this same flight priced out at $673 a month ago, but couldn't pull the trigger at that point. If you are in MDE at that time, let's get some folks together for drinks.

rhydewithdis comments on Help: is anyone coming to Medellin next week?

I'll be getting in on the 10th afternoon, flying on the direct out of JFK in case you need me to help.

rhydewithdis comments on Can anyone tell me where I can find Colombian DVD movies in NY or NJ area, thanks......

All up and down on Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights, Queens. You can also go to Northern Boulevard in Jackson Heights in the upper 70's and 80's streets.
