Birmingham, Alabama to Armenia

I've been to Bogota and now need to go to Armenia. I was wondering what would be the best way to get there? when I do a search for a plane ticket it shows a stop in Bogota of at least 8 hours. Can I get around that somehow? Maybe flying to Miami then to Armenia on Avianca? I dont know can anyone tell me? Thanks ...
