quindioman comments on Hot vs. Good looking vs. Handsome vs. Cute

Hey!!!!! Nice to see that there is at least a mutual interest for a meetup and why not? November seems to be a possible date...considering December is upon us I reckon it's our best bet. Mona...thanks a lot but I post mainly in CB and lately I haven't really been posting at all as I'm netless. CK.....I finally moved from my mum's 7 days shy of my 32nd......an institution has departed muttered my brother as I handed over my keys.....I'm in the deep depts of Deptford now, according to same brother...W6 to SE8...a bit of a change but I'm taking it all in my stride....PS......don't let the uni life stress you....it's hard I know but I'm sure you won't let it get the better out of you....how I envy you....in a nice way of course :-) As for the meetup wouldn't it have to be a Friday or Saturday? Although I am completely flexible for another day. I don't mind either Colombian or gringo, although if I'm going to stick my neck out I think maybe an English place might be more accomodating for all attending. Cockney Colombian is another one in London as is Gringolondinense, Kalder (I think) and anyone else up for it. Shame you're so far away Billy....

quindioman comments on Hot vs. Good looking vs. Handsome vs. Cute

It's thanks to you I'm here Kat....I'm really making an exception here you know :-p I should be fine for November...just let me know in advance so I can book a day off if I'm working.

quindioman comments on Hot vs. Good looking vs. Handsome vs. Cute

He BB...I been busy moving homes and stuff plus no internet...got to be using those crappy internet sites or pretending I miss my mum and come round hers to use the net there....how's things with you?

quindioman comments on Hot vs. Good looking vs. Handsome vs. Cute

I concur with BillyB...all this talk of men as if we were the last bit of broccoli being squabled over by a bunch of ravenous vegans at the organic section of the local Tescos....i find highly objectionable. Now back to the subject at hand. HOT: My mum's 40something year old friend who on occasion even stayed the night. The first and only 40something that put really naughty thoughts into my head. It didn't help that she'd come into my bedroom to say goodnight in her red silk nightie that left very little to my already almighty imagination. It didn't help either the manner in which she said goodnight...."que descanses bizcocho" as she flicked her hair the same way whatserface from the pantene adverts....and there was me, cross legged on the floor organising my CD collection or was it playing lego? Open eyed, bewildered and completely lost for words...in a nutshell una hueva completa. Mind you hitting on the wife of a Colombian serving 19 years at Her Majesty's Pleasure might not have been the smartest thing I'd ever done...and that list of NOT THE SMARTEST THINGS I'VE EVER DONE carried on growing past my 18th birthday when I was sure that, being a man, I would no longer carry on doing "not smart things".....enough of HOT GOOD LOOKING: A bit self explanatory really.....if a bloke says to you that you are good looking he A) Is blatantly lying thinking that any compliment leaving his mouth might get him nearer to your bedpost B) Really means it because you are GOOD LOOKING. Much easier than trying to explain hot HANDSOME: Men don't use this word when describing a woman...she's ELEGANT, she's BEAUTIFUL......handsome is what that fat butch lesbian uses to describe a BEAUTIFUL woman to her Pat Butcher lookalike friend gawping on with a Park Road dangling out the corner of her mouth. CUTE: Theres an air of pureness, of wholeness unspoilt, which in a way, is like the antithesis of HOT with it's dirty/seedy connotations. It's like wholegrain rice with steamed white fish and steamed vebgetables is cute but chicken and mushroom Pot Noodle is Hot....simple really. And yes I am up for a meetup.....that is if La Mona has no objections....and I'm sure...being the super-cool Calena that she is she won't have any. Hello guys and gals BTW....Cheers for the heads up Kat

quindioman comments on Danger: it's raining

Two famous Colombian footballers died because of lightning strikes whilst training...if my memory serves me correct they played for Deportivo Cali at the time.....one of them even represented the Colombian football team...Herman "Carepa" Gaviria...Desi is right (when is she not).

Mononoke has pointed out two of the many spooky characters that adorn Colombian folklore...La Madre Monte who I belive also goes by the name of La Llorona...I believe she was meant to have drowned her only son and one can still hear her "cries" whilst out in the mountains. There's also the Tres Pies which from what I know is a 3 legged bird whose 2 syllable whistle is meant to forecast the death of someone.
Mononoke that same story your boyfriend told you was doing the rounds some years ago in Armenia.....there was a nightclub on the outskirts of Armenia on the way to Circasia in the north. The club mysteriously burned down....they say that same sexy/devil had frequented the club...apparently the women that were kissed by this mysterious character had developed a burn on the spots where they had been kissed.
The feet they saw were like the hooves of a goat......an urban legend if I've ever heard one.
Apparently witches like to make their presence felt by tying horses' mane into trenzas on farms...I've heard this story from several different sources.

Colombia is a damn spooky place and whilst it's very easy to dismiss and scoff at such stories I got the fright of my life back in '94 whilst I was living at my gran's in Armenia...that's another story about brujeria though.

quindioman comments on Obscenities

Nice to see you monpirri.
Good points.
I have tried to analyse situations when I use the F word and if I'm being honest it's not so much because I'm insecure and certainly not because I have any desire in intimidating but more to "fit in" and allow my audicence to empathise with me. It has all to do with the context, there are always going to be situations when you know that profanity will not help your cause....effing and blinding next time you meet your in-laws for the first time would be one obvious example, however trying to sound like a college professor whilst discussing the weekends' football match results down the pub on a saturday night might result in your friends inviting you less and less for said discussion.
Your points about cursing within certain environments such as in jail or within a gang are valid although they are not absolute and don't take into account the cursing divulged by your "regular" person.

quindioman comments on Medellin River

The parked cars by the river are a common sight.
Many Colombians that live inland treat a trip to the river the same way some might treat a trip to the beach.
It gets hot in Colombia and for someone that lives inland going to the coast is just not feasible on short notice.....no problem just rustle up a nice sancocho gather the family round pak the pokers and una caneca and you're good to go....a nice day out in the river!

quindioman comments on Obscenities

... I believe it might have to do with the generation we grew up in.
Live an let live. I respect both Scooby's and panos' viewpoints. I have noticed that the older generations seem to place a higher value on a conservative lifestyle characterised by your nuclear family and adhering to some form of monotheistic worship versus the hedonistic type of lifestyle that scooby points out seems to be the norm nowadays.
Aztec...being the staunch academic I know you are I think you are predisposed to a certain type of individual in the first place. I disagree that those that frequent the domain of profanity are necessarily lacking intelligence, dilligence and tact perhaps yes, but just because they may have a penchant for sprinkling their vocabulary with the odd four letter verb does not make them less of a person or their point any less valid.

Tell me how is La ciudad milagro thesedays?

quindioman comments on Drug Turns Crime Victims Into Zombies

.... it can happen to anyone....it happened to my padre and he sure as hell don't give much papaya

quindioman comments on Women in PBH

another late night huh katica?

quindioman comments on What is "otun?"

... El lago del Otun is a lake by the same name in Risaralda (capital Pereira)....if I'm not mistaken there's a river by the name of Otun as well which could very well be La Perla del Otun

quindioman comments on Herb and Spice names in Spanish

Desi corvina = sea bass (white)
Robalo = Snook

PS you are right about sobrebarriga being flank steak

quindioman comments on Herb and Spice names in Spanish

kat for chicharron just get a nice cut of belly of pork make the cuts and deep fry.....the healthier option is to smother with olive oil and grill or oven.

Taking an educated guess at pargo rojo I would say it could very well be red snapper

quindioman comments on Red Bulls sign Angel from Aston Villa

... *El Pedo Angel never made any impact in the EPL....I'm surprised he never went back to Argentina - that might have been a better move than the MSL
*David Beckham was a decent player....his workrate was often overlooked, his deadball techinique one of the best in the world alas he was a victim of his own success which is probably why he gets undue stick.

I thought this thread was about futbol...as a very funny man once said...NFL "Nothing Fucking Like" football

quindioman comments on Colombian Blog

Damn....people sure do like to kick a dog when he is down.

I've learnt that people will draw the conclusion they want to draw about you and that's not necessarily the right one...of course they will make comments and tidily exaggerate them to support their post, but won't step back to reflect what hypocrites they are.

quindioman comments on Newbie in Cali---Medellin Bashing

Mononoke...people from Pasto are the butt of Colombian jokes.

quindioman comments on Colombian Blog

let me guess....seedless red?

quindioman comments on Colombian Blog

I personally prefer cblog to pbh but other people prefer apples to pears.

quindioman comments on american looking to live in medellin

katica...it was always brrrr for me....I had to dance and jiggy and shadowbox, anything to withstand the cold showers in the morning...I tell you what though I felt good once they were over!

quindioman comments on american looking to live in medellin

damn...the more I read the more I'm beginning to think I'm from trailer trash family in Colombia.....I've never had a hot shower in Colombia (well maybe once but that's another story). In Armenia none of the houses I've lived in have had a hot shower (and I've lived in a few). In Cali I wouldn't even want to take a hot shower even if I had the option.

quindioman comments on Favourite Bogota radio station(s)

I think that a lot of the radio stations have the same kind of playlists....last time I listened to Radioactiva was back in 94 whilst living in Armenia, they are good for rock as packagegirl says. Lately I listen to Tropicana but it seems they have a pretty limited selection too.

quindioman comments on Incredible traveling child

I got sent from Colombia to England by myself as a 9 year old, mind you the trolly dolly had an eye out for me.

quindioman comments on Colombian Blog

I was wondering when someone was going to bring this up.

quindioman comments on Newbie in Cali---Medellin Bashing

Could be, although I have it from various sources that the Paisa thing really relates to all people from Viejo Antioquia in that the underlying common denominator is the accent...I'm from Armenia but everytime I open my mouth people ask me if I'm Paisa...I'll tell them I'm from Armenia and they'll just nod their head. Strictly speaking people from Armenia are know as Cuyabros...personally I have more of an affinity with Cali than with Medellin (bar the accent) and couldn't give a Castlemaine XXXX if I'm considered Paisa or not.

quindioman comments on Newbie in Cali---Medellin Bashing

Paisa = Anyone from the departamento de Antioquia (capital Medellin)....people from Viejo Antioquia (Caldas, Risaralda and Quindio are considered Paisas too)...they have a distinct dialect which most people can tell...the famous Paisa accent.

quindioman comments on Watching German Bundesliga in Bogota!

Open an account with bwin (http://www.bwin.com), it's free and you don't have to spend a peso/euro.
Pick a match...if you follow the Bundesliga you'll know the 1. Bundesliga matches are played on Saturdays. On the bwin site check the live section where they have all the fixtures for the Saturday Bundesliga matches....they also have the 2. Bundesliga as well if you are interested.....good luck.

quindioman comments on New moderator

congrats Desi I think I might start posting on the regular again at PBH.....
I apologise in advance to those that I have irrigated...I mean irritated in the past.

quindioman comments on anyone care for some morcilla?

it's true that the photo does not do any justice to this fine delicacy.

quindioman comments on anyone care for some morcilla?

Stop this rellena bashing I was bought up calling this thing rellena instead of morcilla, and I like to think of it as a local delicacy.
Sure I know what it's made of but guess what I had on my plate whilst reading this thread? A good piece of Denny's black pudding from the local irish butchers, so I thought I'd write an impromptu post actually saying I LOVE RELLENA.
In response to Colombiche's post about killing chickens.....I know very well what it's like to actually take an animal kill it, strip it, pluck it and stuff it before putting the thing in your mouth and it has to be the most umpleasant experience (apart from the one time I had piles-but that's another story) ever......the smell is BAD I cannot relate that particular smell to anything else but sufficiently bad to put me off sancocho freshly prepared in fincas for ever.
Now the pig was a different matter.....i felt sorry for the poor thing but once cooked the meat was delicious.

quindioman comments on Queen LP records made in Colombia?

i always wondered......growing up in Armenia I do recall seeing some coloured vynil....cannot say whether it was Queen, but those records looked really funky in blue and pink.....

quindioman comments on slang words to describe Colombian men and women?

... Male: Pelado, Chino, muchacho.....although these are more for kids and you can add culicagado to that list
Female: Pelada, hembra, muchacha, ricura, reina, princesa, preciosa, divina, ricura, mamita, mamasita, mamasota....erm I'm getting carried away now....

quindioman comments on colombian music recommendations

here's a few vallenato artists Jorge Celedon
Los Diablitos Colombianos
Los Chiches Vallenatos....erm, that's it for now.....maybe the costenos can chip in...it is their music after all.

quindioman comments on How many posters are in Colombia and run a business?

hey bufalo un yipao papa!!!! Now that's what I'm talking about....them Mexicans from LA in their bouncy cars ain't got nothin' on them Willys driving, machete wielding, plantain carrying Paisas........yeeehaaaaaaaaaa!
Where's the river?

quindioman comments on How many posters are in Colombia and run a business?

"Look at all those stupid theme parks in Armenia now" Hey Bufalo....you seem to have a lot of love for my city, I haven't been for nearly 2 years I was just wondering which parks you were referring to? For the record Armenia has changed but I belive a large percentage of the change was forced due to the earthquake that hit in '99.... I was amazed with some of the changes that I saw on my last visit, most notably the CAM building that replaced La Galeria (smack bang in the middle...between the 18th and 17th opposite San Francisco Church-the reddish one)...I miss that galeria...it had its own charm that has been completely lost now it's been replaced with the building...OK so it was a bit of a dangerous area at night and the bars that dotted the perimeter of that square were seedy types frequented by machete wealding drunkards and toothless ladies of the night that make those $20.000 pros look like Aguila chicas but hey it was part of the package, during the day it was the hussle and bussle of market traders selling everything from gigantic green tomatoes to tripe and everything in between, now the atmosphere in that square is as stale as that 2 inch piece of french bread that's decorating my breadbasket....yes Armenia is changing in some areas for the better but I'm with bufalo on this one....mind you I'm an old fashioned romantic who hopes to find Armenia the same way he left it back in 83....The Terminal a block up from La Galeria/The CAM building and not on the edge of El Barrio Santander...conversely the terminal is located on top of what used to be the cemetary way back in the day.....oh well.....as long as they don't touch El Parque Sucre I think my sentimental self will survive....I used to spend hours collecting snails in el parque sucre walking back home from school.

quindioman comments on A" pecking order" in South America

if it were a popularity contest Pablo Escobar would win hands down...yet I wouldn't want that modefoque representing Colombia....Shakira is nice and Colombian but she is not a musician she is a performer, Mana are musicians and damn good ones at that......I'd give my vote to Juanes 'cuz he is a talented musician plus that Colombian guitar rocks!
And Elvis Crespo.....UTC, c'mon man out of so much talent from Puerto Rico you champion this muppet? Still....different strokes for different folks I guess.

quindioman comments on Threatened by a punk in Medellin today
