Portena comments on Bogota - Day Trip Ideas Manolo58, thanks for that link! That's the hotel I was pointing out, but I couldn't find the website. Also thought it was Du Ruelo. Anyway, there is a great virtual tour on the website.

Portena comments on Bogota - Day Trip Ideas Yes, ColombianoGringo, those conquistadors did love their infinity pools. ;) The hotel is on a hill overlooking Villa de Leyva and blends right in. I'm glad I visited Guatavita, but I just didn't find it that interesting. Maybe I missed something?? I was there about an hour. The view of the lake is beautiful. The bullring is worthy of a photo. I saw one restaurant, and purchased some items at the gift shop there.

Portena comments on are there periodic checks conducted by the guerrilla I always like hearing about your adventures in Colombia, dwmte. :)

Portena comments on Bogota - Day Trip Ideas I vote for Villa de Leyva. An authentic colonial town. There was a hotel there with infinity pools, a gym, massages, restaurants, a bar, horseback riding, and nature hikes. I've never stayed there, but read about it on another traveler's blog. I think it was Du ruelo? But not sure. Maybe someone else here has some more info.

Portena comments on are there periodic checks conducted by the guerrilla sanandressi, would you still avoid places outside of Bogota like Zipaquira and the little mountain towns along the Pan American highway to Tunja? Or are you more concerned about areas in Southern Colombia? I just wondered because I traveled to Villa de Leyva (took a loop and was on the Pan American highway going in one direction and another route returning). I took that trip during a weekday in a private car though I had read it is generally safer on weekends.

Portena comments on DATE OR SOUL MATE PART 2 I think they've found it has a lot to do with human immune systems. According to the research one is attracted to someone whose pheromones indicate their immune system is different from yours (so I guess potential offspring would get a genetic boost in terms of their immune capacities for fighting off disease). Supposedly being on the pill can interfere with this process for women and lead them into a less than optimal relationship (genetically speaking, at least).

Portena comments on don't mean to be soggy toast, but dear ingrid is starting to put a bad taste in my mouth......... She's clearly an extraordinarily brave person with a will of steel. Maybe she seems to be in such a hurry to get back to France because she needs to be in a country where she can feel *safer* while she makes plans for the future. Having been immersed in danger for so long she needs the opportunity to chill out and get her thoughts straight in order to to determine if she will continue her crusade for social jusitce in Colombia. Having time to be in the loving embrace of her family may help to speed the emotional healing process.

Portena comments on THE NEW NUT CASE "I kidnapped myself....tell me the truth or you will never see or hear from me again." Funny! And, this is a good, informative post for the health conscious types.

Portena comments on Downtown Buenos Aires Lucas Freley and Podborski posted several nice photos in the Travalicious section before this section was created.

Portena comments on Tango Stage at the Cafe Tortoni Thank you for the complements on the photos, Lisa. :) As for the photo of that fellow which is now where I posted a photo of the tango stage, I don't know how it got there.

Portena comments on Gay/Lesbian Marriage (Legal) in the USA ja,ja, Doc. Good point! Anyway, I basically agree with Pod.

Portena comments on Jungle View of the Falls Yes! It was a wild boat ride. The water was very turbulent and the falls were going full force. What a blast!

Portena comments on Downtown Buenos Aires You're right, Monpirri, it is close to Calle Florida. I don't know exactly what that street is either. Anyway, don't mention the jail break incident and I won't either!

Portena comments on Iguazu Falls Thanks, Man T. I was wondering where you'd gone. Haven't seen a post from you in a while. Glad you're back!

Portena comments on SPEED DATING Why not try it and see if it works for you? I married pre- the speed dating era so no personal insights on this topic although I did read an interesting magazine article about it. Seems people meet for a short date like lunch just to see of they hit it off and have any interest in a follow-up date.

Portena comments on Iguazu Falls I think it was about a two hour flight with TAM. It's pretty far, RUV! I wouldn't want to take a bus although I've heard there are some very nice, comfortable buses for long distance trips. I think Brazil is known for having the better view, but then you're looking over at Argentina. The photo I posted of the Sheraton was taken from the Brazil side of the falls. Here is a link that provides some information about fun activities in the area. http://www.iguazuforest.com

Portena comments on Lucas Freley I just saw your Argentina posts in the Travelicious section today. Never looked at that section before. Great photos! I was surprised to see the snow in Buenos Aires. How often does that actually occur? Hope all is going well for you. Haven't seen any posts by you in a while.

Portena comments on It's how you learned your first language! The motricity strategy certainly seems to be a good option, particularly at that developmental level. The kids are paying attention and clearly having lots of fun! How many languages do you speak, Desi? And, what were the learning strategies that worked best for you? I suppose I could apply the motricity strategy for myself by signing up for riding classes with a Spanish riding instructor. So, on my travel wish list, I'll add a trip to Spain to work with a famous jumper rider!

Portena comments on It's how you learned your first language! Is it 5-7 times that you have to repeat before something sinks in? It's some figure like that. Sounds right to me, HG.

Portena comments on It's how you learned your first language! Most communicative classes use music, photos, role play, musical chairs etc... to basically throw every type of stimulus to the learner during the process. It is believed that this attaches a significance that aids in learning. Who knows? Yes, those strategies definitely enhance memory!

Portena comments on It's how you learned your first language! Different people probably do better with different learning modalities (some are more visual and some are more verbal). So one person might learn quicker from a video showing the language in action whereas someone else might do better with a lecture or reading stories and articles in the language they are trying to learn. The human brain has a lot of plasticity in childhood (it can be flexible as to what part of the brain takes over certain functions), but functions are fairly predictably organized after that. So, for example, a young child could have a severe injury to the left hemisphere where language functions usually take place and the right hemisphere might actually take over the language functions. With regard to your question: If adults could somehow gain the ability to forget about thngs they already know and ACT as if they are learing this a new (That's an ocean) than maybe they can grasp quicker and for longer? I think the issue is more that the adult brain is already organized in a certain way so (if one could choose to forget about things they already know), I don't think it would make a difference. Anyway, that's the kind of question that launches a research project. I suppose, for research purposes, hypnosis might offer a way for adults to forget what they already know.
