Newsfeed is back

The newsfeed (that shows what your friends are doing) is back. It's a link at the top of the page. Enjoy!

Showing more friends on profile

I changed the profile so it shows more friends now, for example: http://poorbuthappy.com/tejasmarcos/

New features

Hi all, the new site is live, a bunch of small changes. - The travel section is gone. I'm working on a much improved version, which should be live within a month. - Signups are open again! - You can flag a comment if it's against the rules. The moderators will then review that comment. I hope this makes it much easier to point out comments that break the rules. - You can post links and pictures too. They're almost the same as a forum post, just displayed somewhat differently. - The homep ...

Making changes

The site may look a bit strange for the next hour while I'm making changes to it...

Updated the rules

Hey all, I've updated the rules slightly. http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/the-rules1/ What's new: you can't have multiple handles, and no talk allowed at all about commercial love providers (ie. where to meet girls, prepagos, ...) or anything like that. I also tried to clarify a few things in the new rules, let me know if you have any questions. Meanwhile I've been working on a new version of the site, it's got a few new features, I hope to launch it this week. Cheers! ...

Cali spammer

A user was spamming links to a website in Cali (thanks for reporting him). His links and account were deleted, but the posts that he spammed on (all related to cali) are still showing up in the 'active' page. This problem will resolve itself over the next few days. ...

A group is its own worst enemy

See http://www.shirky.com/writings/group_enemy.html As you may know, we still have user signups turned off. This is a great board, and I love it, but it's got a few tiny pietsie little problems too, as you also may know. The link above explains things well I think.. Let's discuss thoughts and ideas about the board, if you're into it. ...

New rules

Hi all, we have some new moderation policies coming up soon, but meanwhile a new rule: no sexual photos allowed for your profiles. We'll be judging each case on its own, but you know who you are: please change your profile picture. Thanks! ...

Downtime

Hi all, the site was down for a few hours today because the hosting company was upgrading their servers. Apologies for the inconvenience!

And we're back

I've had a lot of requests to open up the site again, especially now with the marches in Colombia, so we're open again. Soon we'll also announce new moderation rules, in short: we'll be a bit stricter in the future. Meanwhile, enjoy and behave! ...

Too much drama

Hi all, there's been too much drama the last few days, so I'm shutting down the site for a week or two, let everyone cool down. You won't be able to make new posts or comments until I open up the site again. Now.. relax! ...

Some stats

Yo all, some stats today since I was checking the database anyway and there seemed to be some interest. You've all done some serious damage the past years! Some stats of today: - 313,287 comments - and that's not counting the about 10,000 (!) that the moderators have had to delete (come on guys!) - on over 25,000 posts - from over 16,000 signed-up users - who have made 2,359 friends, - and a few hundred people on the ignore lists - all this generating about 25,000 pageviews a day ...

Donate 10$ to help Tibetan Freedom Movement win 50,000$

There's a challenge on Facebook going on, it ends in about 2 hours. The charity with the most people donating (it doesn't matter if you donate the minimum) gets an extra 50,000$. My friend Nathan is part of a GREAT charity called the Tibetan Freedom Movement. They're 5 people away from winning. If you want to help, do this within the next hour or so: 1. Log on to your Facebook account. If you don't have an account already, please open one at www.facebook.com. 2. Once you're logged in, ...

Freaky stuff

Sending a container from Europe to Medellin?

Can anyone help with some info: if I wanted to send a container (with furniture and stuff) from Antwerp (Belgium) to Medellin, roughly how much would it cost, how long would it take and am I gonna get lots of stuff stolen? If I understand it correctly, there are companies that arrange things for you (to pack the container, to rent it, to get the paperwork done, perhaps even to rent the truck that takes it from the coast to Medellin). Any recommendations? All practical info welcome! ...

Anyone looking for a host?

By the way, if anyone is looking for a host for their website, I like Dreamhost a lot, and I have a promo code that'll save you 50 bucks when you sign up with them. Use the promo code POORBUTHAPPY and sign up here: http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?154088 . PBH gets a kickback if you sign up through this link, but at no extra cost to you, plus I'd recommend them even without that, they're really good. ...

Site was down

The site was down for about a day, things seem fixed now. The hosting company had electrical problems. At least they really work hard to make things better, that's why I like them: "The BlueArc engineers are still continuing to work feverishly on this issue and have already escalated the issue to the senior engineering staff of their component vendor. (storage shelf) We should be able to report further updates soon with more information on the progress." ...

Internet bicycle in Colombia

Via Juliana Rincon we learn about a special bicycle in operation in Caquetá, Colombia: “It seats two and carries with it a complete radio broadcasting system, able to send out Wi-max signals and be heard not only through the Andaquí Community Radio, but live through Internet as well“. http://www.globalvoicesonline.org/2007/11/27/innovative-tools-live-bicycle-radio/ ...

Log in problem

Site is faster now

A few days ago the site went very very slooooow. I thought I did something wrong but it turns out that there was an outage at our host. Here are the details: http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/category/system-incidents/web-and-email-latency-on-gs02-grid-service-cluster-2/ The good thing is that because of this, they've added lots of hardware and memory, and now the site seems pretty damn fast. I also upgraded my MySQL hosting, which should speed things up even further. So let's hope it stay ...

Upgrading hosting

The site is too slow lately, so I'm upgrading the hosting today. Hopefully that will help speed things up a bit. I'm also continuing work on improving the code to be faster.

Slowness yesterday

Hi all, yesterday, our host (mediatemple) had problems with their datacenter, which caused the site to be very slow for a while. At the same time I was making some coding improvements, which I couldn't test because of the slowness. So if you had any problems yesterday with the site, my apologies! ...
