Go to Expat Peru site for more info. but I will vent here.
Spent so much of my ******* time planning the MP/Cusco trip and no I won't plan for another trip because my vacation is when it is and spent so much time planning already, WON"T DO IT A 2ND TIME.
Fortunately by design most of my tavel arrangements can be reversed in time to limit my losses. Would try Cusco by itself but read on the Expat forum that these striked can get kinda nasty and even shut down the airport too. Then even if I got there sounds like the retail, dining and entertainment could close up also. Sorry not on my precious 2 weeks. I'll go back to Colombia any day or another part of Peru away from all this.
I'm sure the srikers have some legit. grievances and I never like the rich getting richer so it is what it is, I just won't try to go and complicate my short life.

nine inch nails says on Nov 5, 2008, 14:17: I got one update from Peru Rail after I inquired and so far only thru the 8th. I also found an article on-line where the last strike in July only lasted a couple days. So I'm goin anyways and keeping my fingers crossed.

ctgbound says on Dec 27, 2008, 00:30: For those who have planned to go to Machu Picchu and are concerned about rail strikes....you can also go by colectivo to Santa Teresa and then to Hidroeléctrico. From there it is a beautiful, two-hour walk on the railroad tracks to the town of Aguas Calientes where everyone stays before going up to Machu Picchu. It also costs MUCH less than the train. I don't even think we spent $10/each roundtrip when we went last year. (You can return the same way.)
