Patrick comments on Colombia to have six palm biodiesel plants by 2009

Don’t have to worry about “Nucalar” waste in the US any more just start another war. Depleted Uranium makes great ammunition, it’s all over “Irack” but what the heck they’re just rag-heads.

Patrick comments on Obtain Colombian citizenship after two years of residence

Your problem is not Colombian Citizenship / US Citizenship. Your real problem is taxation. Both the US and Colombia tax world wide income, you may be letting yourself in for dual taxation as well as dual citizenship. You should get professional advice before taking the plunge.

Rikito, I live in Curacao half the year and Cartagena the other half. My wife is Colombian and I’m an American so maybe I can help you. Might I suggest that you get the Visa situation straight before you spend any money on tickets or hotels and the like. Patrick comments on Shipping Suggestions from Bogota to Cartagena and Manizales

MC, Try Jamar in Barranquilla. I got all the furniture for my Apartment there, it’s gigantic. Four buildings full of furniture and a vast selection. They have a small showroom in Cartagena but the prices are higher, for the same stuff. Shipping was a couple hundred dollars from BQ to Cart. Muebles Jamar Cl 34 # 39-41 Tel: 575-351-5131 Shipping from Bogota to Cart. Is rather expensive, last time I checked prices on a full semi load (plastics) it was a million two (pesos) plus insurance. That was over a year ago, so I would imagine it’s even more now. Good luck, Patreick

Charles de Gaulle??? You learn such interesting things on PBH! How did he arive in Colombia? In a Box? Did he stay? Maybe when they find the box in 2000 years they will they'll say GEE, he didn't arise from the dead afterall. LOL You guys are a trip!!

Patrick comments on Caracas to Baranquilla? How?

Aires Air Lines flies from.... Curacao and Aruba to B'quilla 3 times a week. You can fly from Caracas everyday to ether island. Or, get to Maracaibo from Caracas, Aires also flies from there to B'quilla. I wouldn't chance the bus!

Patrick comments on Cartagena Real Estate

Scott The state of Cartagena Real Estate; Ultra high prices and a glut of new construction. Hooker knows of what he speaks, wait a while, me thinks you’ll see prices come down a bit and availability of older apartments improve. One other thing, Buying and selling, a two edged sward, While Paul sells properties for more, he gets the prices he asks, so if you’re selling who would you want to sell your property and who would you sell to, given a choice? Paul would certainly be right up there at the top of my list. Just my HO.

Patrick comments on ARCHBISHOP HUGO CHAVES!!!

You are right-- Cali373, you are right this is an off-topic post. However there has been a great deal of speculation on PBH of late regarding the intentions of his eminence. Can his new air force shoot down the Colombian air force, will his new Russian planes provide air cover for the FARC, blah, blah, blah, no proof of this of course, not a speck, so I thought I’d lighten up the conversations with this article from FOX-NEWS “The War Room” Just so we all could have a good laugh, BTW Sr Tertius, I love the picture, I think I’ll have it enlarged and hang it in my Banjo, LOL

Lumpy!! The Correct name for this world wide group is "The Hash House Harriers" They bill themselves as "The drinking club with the running problem". Going to the "Hash" is great fun if you're in reasonably good shape, if you're not, skip the run and just drink the beer. It's a Brit organization and is very active, mostly in former British colonies, they do a great deal of charity work and have alot of fun doing it. Brits are great Ex-Pats, they've been doing it for a long time. Here is thier WWWeb site: http://www.cix.co.uk/~bicesterh3/uk/

Shame, shame Sr Tertius, no balance........... If I’m not mistaken it was a “Moderator” who made the original post! Colombia does not exist in a vacuum Sr. and while I can’t ascertain what was in Che’s mind when he made the comments quoted above, he probably was not talking about Colombia specifically.

I also sense a tad of hostility towards my post noting that you did not object when another poster wrote “If there is a man I admire than more than my father, that man would be Che Cuevera”. Shame, shame Sr. no balance. By the way I am no fan of the man who presently resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. either.

Least we forget............. Least we forget who this idol of the Left really was, read this excerpt from a Real Cuban Patriot.
A Cuban gentleman named Pierre San Martin was among those jailed by the gallant Che. A few years ago he recalled the horrors in a El Nuevo Herald article. "32 of us were crammed into a cell" he recalls. "16 of us would stand while the other sixteen tried to sleep on the cold filthy floor. We took shifts that way. Actually, we considered ourselves lucky. After all, we were alive. Dozens were led from the cells to the firing squad daily. The volleys kept us awake. We felt that any one of those minutes would be our last."
"One morning the horrible sound of that rusty steel door swinging open startled us awake and Che's guards shoved a new prisoner into our cell. His face was bruised and smeared with blood. We could only gape. He was a boy, couldn't have been much older than 12, maybe 14.
"What did you do?" We asked horrified. "I tried to defend my papa," gasped the bloodied boy. "I tried to keep these Communist sons of b**tches from murdering him! But they sent him to the firing squad."
Soon Che's goons came back, the rusty steel door opened and they yanked the valiant boy out of the cell. "We all rushed to the cell's window that faced the execution pit, " recalls Mr San Martin. "We simply couldn't believe they'd murder him!"
"Then we spotted him, strutting around the blood-drenched execution yard with his hands on his waist and barking orders – the gallant Che Guevara." Here Che was finally in his element. In battle he was a sad joke, a bumbler of epic proportions (for details see Fidel; Hollywood's Favorite Tyrant). But up against disarmed and bloodied boys he was a snarling tiger.
"Kneel Down!" Che barked at the boy.
"ASSASSINS!" We screamed for our window. "MURDERERS!! HOW CAN YOU MURDER A LITTLE BOY!"
" I said: KNEEL DOWN!" Che barked again.
The boy stared Che resolutely in the face. "If you're going to kill me," he yelled. "you'll have to do it while I'm standing! MEN die standing!"
" COWARDS! – MURDERERS!..Sons of B**TCHES!" The men yelled desperately from their cells. "LEAVE HIM ALONE!" HOW CAN...?! "And then we saw Che unholstering his pistol. It didn't seem possible. But Che raised his pistol, put the barrel to the back of the boys neck and blasted. The shot almost decapitated the young boy.
"We erupted. We were enraged, hysterical, banging on the bars. "MURDERERS! – ASSASSINS!" His murder finished, Che finally looked up at us, pointed his pistol, and BLAM!-BLAM-BLAM! emptied his clip in our direction. Several of us were wounded by his shots."
To a man (and boy) Che's murder victims went down in a blaze of defiance and glory. So let's recall Che's own plea when the wheels of justice finally turned and he was cornered in Bolivia. "Don't Shoot!" he whimpered. "I'm Che! I'm worth more to you alive than dead!"
I guess they didn’t think so. I think the scumbag got exactly what he deserved. It’s to bad the Medieval practice of “Drawn and Quartered” was no longer in fashion.

Patrick comments on THE BUSINESS NEEDS YOU!

b bruce & GIB............ Just out of curiosity do either of you know what satirical commentary is? It doesn’t sound like it based on your comments.

“As for Patrick. He has missed his calling. He needs to apply here in the USA to the National Democratic Party for a job as Minister of Mis-Information or perhaps Michael Moore needs a film editor. But as I say to all left leaning liberals. "Please do not believe what you think!" Great job gringoinbogota! Viva Colombia!”

b bruce, I did not write this piece, it was written by a Latina who writes for a web Ezine called Narco News. I think I would have a better chance getting a job with the Republican Parties Minister of Mis-Information given all the Bull S**t they spew. But as I say to all right leaning neo-Nazis, “We must have missed you at Nuremburg”.

GIB, I am a Gringo and I live in Colombia and love both countries. Do I think that everything my Government (US) does is wrong? No, of course I don’t. Do I think spending 25 Billion Dollars in the “War on Drugs” is money well spent? No I don’t! Why? Because it has not reduced the availability of illicit drugs, it has not driven the narco dealers out of business and it has become a terrible hardship on the American People; not only the tax burden but the property confiscation laws which many times hurt innocent people and for many other reasons. I lost my younger brother to drug abuse, so believe me I have no love for the scum that deal in this stuff. If throwing money at this problem was working I would be all for it, but it’s not. Do I think that spraying chemicals on the coca fields of Colombia is a good idea? No! Why? It doesn’t seem to be reducing coca cultivation, it causes the displacement of many poor Colombians and if the chemicals hurt ONE innocent child then I oppose it for that reason alone.

The Drug Business is solely a matter of supply and demand. If there’s a demand some entrepreneur will figure a way to fill that demand. All-be-it these are scum-bag entrepreneurs. Reduce the demand, reduce the profit motive and you will reduce the problem.

Patrick comments on The end of a relationship...or..

Time will heal....... James,
I went through the same thing 10 years ago. In my case I was working in the Caribbean, my wife and daughters decided they did not care for the island life and one day while I was at work they boarded a plain, calling me from the airport 10 minutes before they left. My family was my whole life, needless to say, I was devastated. I won’t bore you with all the details but I did not see my children for 2 years and that still hurts, when I think about it. My point is you will get over the terrible hurt, the love takes longer. I still care for my ex-wife very much and of course my daughters. They are grown and have families of their own now and have both told me how much they regret what they did. I remarried 4 years ago, my Mariela has become the light of my life and we love each other very much. Time will heal, look forward to your new life and your new adventure.

All the best,

Patrick

Patrick comments on Colombian Troops detained by Venezuela

Sorry for not getting back to you last night, but it was rather late.

“I'm talkin' ideas, not military history....
Colombia is also influenced by France not England.”

I was speaking of military history. My premise was that you can’t beat insurgents with regular army troops. I used the American Revolution as an example, I believe that the use of gorilla warfare tactics premiered, in modern warfare, in the last year of the American Revolution. This brought the British to their knees and to the peace table.

I can’t speak to the French influence on Colombia but since Bolivar was educated in Europe he probably studied Roisseau. Since Roisseau believed in a strong central state and it’s obvious, from history, that Bolivar did as well. I would guess that you’re correct.
While we owe a great debt to the French for their assistance in the Revolution your statement that “Without the French the USA would not exist. It's where the "founding fathers" got their ideas.” Is just not the case.

While Jefferson paraphrased Rousseau in the Declaration of Independence you can see from the following that he also paraphrased Locke.

Locke on Revolution: If a government subverts the ends for which it was created then it might be deposed; indeed, Locke asserts, revolution in some circumstances is not only a right but an obligation. Thus, Locke came to the conclusion that the "ruling body if it offends against natural law must be deposed." This was the philosophical stuff which sanctioned the rebellions of both the American colonialists in 1775, and the French in 1789.

If you get a chance to listen to the following lecture it will be worth your time.
Ideas and Revolution http://www.aynrandbookstore2.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=ER52D&variation=&aitem=18&mitem=27
by John Ridpath, PHD. Argues that the French Revolution sprang from the irrationalism and statism of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, while the pro-reason, pro-individual-rights philosophy of John Locke gave rise to the American Revolution. Audio.

Dr. Ridpath, an associate professor of economics and intellectual history at York University in Toronto, Canada, writes and speaks on the history of ideas and their impact on social change. He has spoken at conferences about the central thinkers in Western history, the impact of their ideas on history, including the ideas influencing the Founding Fathers and early American history.

A number of times throughout history, tyranny has stimulated breakthrough thinking about liberty. This was certainly the case in England with the mid-seventeenth-century era of repression, rebellion, and civil war. There was a tremendous outpouring of political pamphlets and tracts. By far the most influential writings emerged from the pen of scholar John Locke.

He expressed the radical view that government is morally obliged to serve people, namely by protecting life, liberty, and property. He explained the principle of checks and balances to limit government power. He favored representative government and a rule of law. He denounced tyranny. He insisted that when government violates individual rights, people may legitimately rebel.

These views were most fully developed in Locke's famous Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government, and they were so radical that he never dared sign his name to it. He acknowledged authorship only in his will. Locke's writings did much to inspire the libertarian ideals of the American Revolution. This, in turn, set an example which inspired people throughout Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Thomas Jefferson ranked Locke, along with Locke's compatriot Algernon Sidney, as the most important thinkers on liberty. Locke helped inspire Thomas Paine's radical ideas about revolution. Locke fired up George Mason. From Locke, James Madison drew his most fundamental principles of liberty and government. Locke's writings were part of Benjamin Franklin's self-education, and John Adams believed that both girls and boys should learn about Locke. The French philosopher Voltaire called Locke “the man of the greatest wisdom. What he has not seen clearly, I despair of ever seeing.”

Some notable contemporaries thought highly of Locke. Mathematician and physicist Isaac Newton cherished his company. Locke helped Quaker William Penn restore his good name when he was a political fugitive, as Penn had arranged a pardon for Locke when he had been a political fugitive. Locke was described by the famous English physician Dr. Thomas Sydenham as “a man whom, in the acuteness of his intellect, in the steadiness of his judgement, . . . that is, in the excellence of his manners, I confidently declare to have, amongst the men of our time, few equals and no superiors.”

"It is one thing to show a man that he is in error, and another to put him in possession of truth." John Locke

Platano

“Without the French the USA would not exist. It's where the "founding fathers" got their ideas.”

A very short history lesson for you sir.

British General Clinton along with another general, Lord Cornwallis sailed from New York with a fleet of 90 ships and 850 soldiers to take control of the south. The British had several major victories.
After winning the Battle of Savannah in December 1778, the British troops moved on Charleston, South Carolina. Although Washington sent more troops to support Charleston, the American army was eventually force to surrender. Following the victory, Clinton returned to New York leaving General Cornwallis in command.
A second southern army of Americans was formed under General Gates. In August 1780, Gates led an attack against Cornwallis at Camden, South Carolina. When the British charged, the poorly trained militia retreated leaving the regular soldiers greatly outnumbered. General Gates then retreated. The Americans suffered heavy losses as the British won another battle.
General Nathanael Greene replaced General Gates in October 1780. Rather than an all-out attack on Cornwallis, Greene used hit-and-run tactics to inflict damage on the British. This guerilla warfare managed to drive the British towards the coast and back into Yorktown.
By the summer of 1781, the American troops managed to force Corwallis and his army to Yorktown, Virginia. The French naval fleet was on its way to Chesapeake Bay to support the American soldiers surrounding Yorktown.
On September 5, 1771, the French fleet attacked the British navy in Chesapeake Bay. After defeating the British Navy, French Admiral de Grass positioned his fleet and began bombarding the forts with Cornwallis and his troops.
Cornwallis was trapped between the American army and the French navy. By mid-October, Cornwallis was running out of food and ammunition. On October 19, 1781, General Cornwallis and 8,000 British troops surrendered.
Although this was only one quarter of the British troops in America, the surrender has a devastating affect on the British government, who were now concerned they were losing the war.
They were now motivated to negotiate the end of the war, and the Treaty of Paris.
General Greene’s gorilla tactics forced the British to retreat to Yorktown where they were trapped between Washington’s army and the French Fleet and surrendered. By 1781 these tactics were being widely used by our forefathers and the British Army was being badly mauled throughout the colonies.
Our Founding Fathers got most of their political ideas from John Locke who is called the “Philosopher of Freedom” He was an ENGLISHMAN not French. The French Revolution did not occur until after the American Revolution.

Patrick comments on Colombian Troops detained by Venezuela

Gee Kernow I thought you were older than me My response was to Mr. Smith who would like to send 10 to 15,000 U. S. Troops into Colombia. You think that’s a good idea? Seems like every time we try that it doesn’t work out. How does that go, keep making the same mistake over and over and expecting a different result. Not only that we’d escalate, we always do, and we would incur the hatred of the Colombian people. My point is a simple one, you can’t beat insurgents with regular army troops. You know what would happen if we did this? Think about it.

You ccan't beat insergents wi........ You can’t beat insurgents with regular army (anybody’s).

It sounds vaguely familiar, I think it was JFK, telling us we are sending a few thousand “Advisors” to help the South Vietnam Army defeat these rebels, or something like that. I was only 17 or 18 years old, but it sounded like a good idea at the time. What did I know, I was only a kid. Then recently GWB said about the same thing, “Our troops will be welcomed with flowers as liberators”. YOU CAN NOT BEAT INSURGENTS WITH REGULAR ARMY TROOPS. Anybody remember the “American Revolution”?

Patrick comments on Road travel Medellin to Cartagena

You have to remember…. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. However, there is a great difference between informed educated opinion and “asshole” opinions. Obviously you would not be very safe in Monteria if you were to stand on a beer crate, on a street corner, and call on the local farm workers to strike for higher pay. You would have to be a complete moron to do something like that. Other than that, Monteria and the rest of the north coast are probably the safest places in Colombia for a tourist or Gringo. I live in Cartagena and my wife is from Monteria; we have driven from our home to her families home in many times, during the day, we have also driven to Barranquilla many times, during the day, and have never experienced any problems. Some of the more responsible posters on PBH have real insight to share with those who truly seek to learn. Safety must be a legitimate concern for any person who travels in Colombia so when GIB, for example, warns you of the hazards of traveling by car or bus between cities, pay attention, he knows what he is talking about. When UC tells you that Monteria is safe he expects that you understand you should act as a responsible guest in that city and not try to incur the ire of the AUC, if you do you deserve what ever you get. Act like an adult, be cognoscent of your surroundings, remember that you are a guest and thoroughly enjoy Colombia and her beautiful people.

Disclaimer: You don’t have to be insane to post here, but it certainly helps.

Patrick comments on APOSTILLO QUESTION

Gator, you're welcome... My visa was issued at the Colombian Consulate on the island of Curacao. I have lived and worked here since 1996 and have residency.

Patrick comments on APOSTILLO QUESTION

Changed DAS requirements.. Gator states in his post above “After entering Colombia you have six months to appears at the Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad (DAS, the Administrative Department of Security)” This apparently was the case as I was told the same thing when I received my visa. However the rules have changed, you must register within two months after you enter the country. This has to do with the tightening of security regulations at DAS. The problem is DAS has not notified the Colombian embassy’s or consults of this change. I brought this to the attention of the consul’s staff here in Curacao and they told me that they had no notification of any change in DAS policy. Just wanted to point this out to you because the change is a good thing as you can not open a bank account until you are registered and get your Cedula de Extranjeria. It also seems that different Colombian Embassy’s have slightly different requirements. I was not charged a fee for my visa and was not required to have the letter of good conduct apostilled. As far as income all they wanted to see was a copy of my bank statement for the previous 3 months, no mention of specific requirements on income.

I am working on the island of Curacao 6 months out of the year and living in Cartagena the other 6. I will probably be doing this for another year or two before retiring completely.

BTW, they are starting a total rebuild of the oil refinery in Aruba, if that industry is your field you might want to check into it.

Patrick comments on APOSTILLO QUESTION

Apostille seals are… Apostille seals are applied by the Department of State of the State that issued the document. Example, your birth certificate, is issued by the Department of Vital Statistics of the state where you were born; the Apostille is put on by the Department of State where you were born. In most states these departments are housed in separate offices. It’s a real pain in the butt and can take a lot of time especially if you live across the country from where you were born.

There is a web site that can help, http://www.vitalchek.com/ Click on your state and follow the instructions.

Patrick comments on Gringoinbogotá ATTENTION PETER

Wake the F*** up!! There is a forty year insurgency going on in Colombia, Remember? It is the kidnapping capital of the world, Remember? I live in the safest city in Colombia and I am careful. There are barrios in Cartagena that I will not go near, true in any big city in the world. Just like living in Miami, you wouldn’t go into Liberty City at night, unless you had a death wish. GIB provides a valuable service to this board, so stop the childish BS, people don’t get banned from this forum for expressing their opinion and that’s my opinion, if you don’t like it, TS.

Patrick comments on I have found the worse shipping company in the world!!!

Shipping to Cartagena….. I don’t know why you all keep using these second or third rate shipping companies. I live in Cartagena; Federal Express is the only way to ship, period. I have shipped stuff from Curacao, Antigua and the States probably 30 times and have never had a problem. They have an office in Bocagrande on San Martin right next to BlockBuster Video. The two beautiful young ladies who work at the counter speak fairly good English. I always ship “Hold for Counter Pickup”. The girls call me, I go to the office, sign the paperwork, pay the duty, if any, and that’s it. I have only had to go to customs once and that was on a fairly large shipment. Perhaps, I have better luck because I use a freight forwarding company in the States. www.usglobalmail.com I have an account with them, it costs $150.00 a year and I save that much because they get a deep discount with FedEx and pass the savings along. So, Go FedEx! And no I don’t work for FedEx.

Patrick comments on What are the toppings on Colombian hot dogs (perros)?

PERROS……. I don’t usually get involved in these “who is the best” BUT, having grownup in New York there is really no contest as to which Hot Dogs are best. Sabretts, the ones sold by the Hot Dog Vendors on the streets of Manhattan with onion sauce, a taste of heaven in the Big Apple. A close second is the Nathan’s Famous Coney Island Hot Dog with freshly made lemonade, on a hot summers day in New York you can’t beat it.

As far as the girls are concerned, Colombia has the best looking ladies in the world, in my humble opinion.
