Pahlke09 comments on Bogota Art

Checked it out I went to the market behind the Hacienda Santa Barbara. Definately what I was looking for and there were a bunch of other good sized markets down and around the area. Unfortunately the type of paintings they had just werent very good. Well I should say that they werent what I was looking for. The Paintings of the houses and streets and things from Peru and Ecuador are just not found here in Colombia from what Ive seen. So i was a little dissapointed. Fortunately I made a lot of female friends along the way, and I am going to get her to send me the paintings from Guayaquill through mail back to Canada. I hope thats not too expensive.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Pahlke09 comments on Colombian Islands

Nuqui or Isla Palma I'm sure there nice places. But basically theres a reason i'm going to Colombia and not Hawaii. I don't really see why i should spend 75-100$ a night for a beach resort when i have the rest of Colombia offering 5-10$ hostels and real people...Santa Marta seems to be the best option as i'm not stuck on an Island, and I have many options in the area. Some have said its a little touristy. I may actually enjoy it a little as I will be alone on my trip, so i wouldn't mind talking to a person or two.

Once again I would like to ask if anyone has ever been to Ciudad Perdida, (the lost city near Santa Marta) As its got me fascinated?

and thanks to everyone who has been offering there opinions and knowledge, it helps!

Santa Marta The more I research Santa Marta, the better it sounds. Lonely planet makes it sound like paradise thats for sure, and still relatively cheap. Ciudad Perdida is very close, as well as Tayrona. Anyone been to either? I'm very curious about Ciudad Perdida, says its a six day hike, 150$~ US, lost city, sounds amazing?

Santa Marta I've only heard good things about Santa Marta, maybe thats where i'll go. I definately plan on spending a week or so in Cartagena.

Lonely Planet I recently bought the South American version of the Lonely Planet guide, and I had already known about this site from google as well, but its one of the top listed sites for Colombia. The description said, a lot of good experienced travelling information and colombians? or something....

No Fears Shown... I agree with you guys, the more fear a person shows, the more they will appear an easy target. I'm not scared at all, and i'm confident that the people in Colombia will be surprisingly open. Well I hope anyways?

What is your guys opinion on this....

I know the more spanish i know the better my trip will be.

-People will be far more friendly!(seeing you attempt their language)
-I'll be able to step off the common path without a total language barrier.
-I'll have less of a chance of getting taken advantage of.
-Hopefully i'll meet more people through knowing spanish.

So my question is... I'm going to have 4 months University Spanish before i leave. I am JUST starting my course. I'm a fast learner, and I am almost fluent in French. I feel that I will pick up more then just the basics in Four months, combined with learning on the spot during my trip. How good at spanish should someone be when travelling anywhere in South America?

Getting Robbed. Thanks for all the helpful pointers and discussion guys, I really am thankful.

As for my comment on getting robbed, I'm not going to be broken hearted if i go through untouched or will I be surprised haha. Its not that I really EXPECT to get robbed, but i just feel that I will know how to handle it, unless it turns really ugly and violent. I'm sure there are a ton of backpackers who go through untouched, likely because they were experienced, or knew what to look for and how to not stand out with gold chains and other accessories.

Basically, as it was said earlier, realise that all they took can be replaced, as long as its not a part of my body, and i'll keep a smile on my face, because i'll still be in the middle of my trip with no itinerary or schedule and all the time in the world.

Freedom?
