nicadj comments on OAS approves resolution on Colombian action in Ecuador

Fecherkly... saw the broadcast... no standing O (that I witnessed) for the Colombian Ambassaor but a resounding applause. Meanwhile, the Venezuelan Ambassador was greated with a lot of "rolling eyes" at his diatribe and absolute silence at his completion. Of course, I understood very little, but my wife tries to translate the important segments. Otherwise, I get good opinions and posts from http://www.cipcol.org/ http://bloggingsbyboz.blogspot.com/ http://ourlatinamerica.blogspot.com/

nicadj comments on Money transfer

What I have learned is that there is a $5,000 per moth limit to wire money into (my wife's) bank account, and also a $20,000 per year cap. That is IF you do not provide back-up or documents to the bank as to where you are getting this money and what it is for. So far, we have not yet gone as far as to ask exactly what kind of documentation they are looking for.

nicadj comments on International $$ transfer

I transfer money from MY US bank to my fiance's bank Bancolombia all the time. It normally gets there in 2 days. Swift Code, Routing #, etc needed. New laws state you cannot send more than $5,000 USD at a time without significant paperwork involved. Cost is $40 USD flat rate everytime I wire. Any proper US bank will know what numbers are needed for an international wire.

nicadj comments on Actual telephone knowledge

Here is the response I got back from Skype?? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for contacting Skype Support. Unfortunately, we do not have any SkypeIn numbers for Colombia yet. We are working very hard at adding more and more locations and numbers for SkypeIn. As soon as we get more numbers in more locations we will add them to our store. Please be patient as it can take time for us to get the necessary approvals for numbers in certain locations.

nicadj comments on Looking for Finca / Land in Bucaramanga

Timba, Don't know where you are getting your info? http://www.icbl.org/lm/2006/colombia.html#Heading339 The rapidly increasing number of casualties is linked in part to the government’s policy of eradicating coca fields and reclaiming land under the “Plan Patriota,” thus increasing NSAG mine-use to protect their camps and coca fields. Most of the new casualties are military, but also include unemployed civilians hired by the military to clear coca fields, for example in Vistahermosa in La Macarena national park in Meta department From 1990 to 1 June 2006, the Observatory recorded a total of 5,152 mine/UXO casualties (1,236 people killed and 3,916 injured) from 8,439 incidents; 3,264 were military, 1,845 civilians, 41 NSAG members; and two cases were unknown. At least 187 casualties were women, 117 were girls and 418 were boys under 18 years; the gender of 33 children was not known. According to the Observatory, the most common activities at the time of the incident were: military activities (3,152 casualties), “passing by” (582), farming (144), tampering (83), playing (62), police activity (32), collecting water, wood or food (24), working at home (20), traveling (14), herding animals (13), fishing (10), other activities (65), and unknown (951). According to the government, 92 percent of casualties occur in rural areas and 88 percent of casualties are people of working age.[184] The 10 Colombian departments with the most reported casualties from 1990 to 1 May 2006 were: Antioquia with 1,288 casualties (25 percent); Meta 492 casualties (9.5 percent); Bolívar 419 casualties (eight percent); Caquetá 387 casualties (7.5 percent); Norte de Santander 336 casualties (6.5 percent); Cauca 274 casualties (5.3 percent); Santander 257 casualties (five percent); Arauca 224 casualties (4.3 percent); Tolima 195 (3.7 percent) and Cundinamarca 142 casualties (2.8 percent). The number of reported casualties in Antioquia increased from 678 (September 2004) to 1,288 in May 2006.[185]

nicadj comments on Hoping to post more

I travel a lot, but will probably start traveling from BGA as my home base next Spring. I'll probably be back in BGA another 3 times in 2007. We live in the San Francisco part of BGA. How about you Adrienne? Is your family in the States? What do they all think? I am sure of my love for Sandra, but sooooooo uncertain of the future. Everybody back home thinks I am insane!

nicadj comments on living in colombia

I too am moving to Colombia. I am a 43 year old male who is currently engaged to a Colombian who has a 10 year old daughter. The father of the child will NOT permit her to move to The U.S, so I am moving to Bucaramanga. Love changes everything. I am just about to find out a lot of these answers. Both feel free to stay in touch.

nicadj comments on Marriage / Visa / Work / Future of Colombia- HELP!!

DW.....

Very Buddhist of you. I am inclined to agree with everything. My new philosophy is this...... "Today is Wednesday"..... that's it. Whatever happens, try and make it a good Wednesday. You can't plan your life, you can only live your days.

nicadj comments on Marriage / Visa / Work / Future of Colombia- HELP!!

Robert,

Unfortunaately, my Spanish worse than awful. What I am preparing is an emotional/logical plea, which my girlfriend will help me with. I will have to READ it to him (and his parents and his sister, if I can get them to agree to sit and discuss this.) My girlfriends relationship with him is sour. He gets the girl on the weekends. He really seems to love his daughter. My girlfriend has broched the subject with him and she comes away thinking there is NO CHANCE he will let her go..... even for vacation.

Most of my friends think that I can never be happy in Colombia. I have my doubts as well, but I can't live without this woman. Big Fork, Big Road on the horizon.

Wow.... what thoughtful and helpful responses.... from strangers no less. I want to thank everybody for their thoughts and opinions. I agree with almost everything everyone said, and I am better for having read them.

THANK YOU

nicadj comments on Move and marry in Colombia

Thanks for the quick response I have so many emotions right now. I honestly think that the 2 of them will never be able to come to the states. We are very much in love and I find myself not being able to live without her.

I know I am being naive, but at 42 I think I should be able to do this rationally.

The dream would be to build a house and run a business out of it. Are you saying there are tremendous obstacles? What in your mind is the 1st step?

Thanks for your input.

nicadj comments on Girlfriend got a tourist visa in Bogota!

Another girlfriend with Visa appointment Just reading some threads. Looks like you are fairly well-respected on this site. If you don't mind, I am going to give you a short summary of where I am.

I met a Colombian girl in Aruba last year. She overstayed her Visa in Aruba, and now she is applying for a US Visa. I thought my immigration lawyer was going to draft a letter on her behalf. As it turns out, he said the LAST THING you want is a letter from a lawyer on a B-2 Tourist visa. He also said that the second to last thing you want is to send a letter from me, her boyfriend. However, I had no choice. She does not have enough money to pay for the trip. She is self employed. She owns the house that she lives in. She has a 9-year old daughter that is PROBABLY not coming on the first visit. All this being said, if she tells the truth (that we are in love and that I am her boyfriend) I have doubts that she will be approved. Her Visa hearing is first thing Wednesday morning, January 25th.

Any thoughts on what she might say or not say on the interview?

Many thanks

Tony

P.S. I visited her in Bucaramanga 6 times last year. I feel safe when I am there, but, in truth, I have no desire to go wandering outside the city. What is living in Colombia like? I may have to consider the options if we cannot export her daughter (due to restrictions imposed by the father.)
