Hi Jonathan! Sorry if it took me some time to get back to you. I work for Southwest Airlines and the summer is usually a busy time for us. Let me get back to you. I have a friend that teaches at the Universidad del Valle and he keeps updated. Nelson

NELHENAO comments on Colombia: New law strengthens impunity for human rights abusers

Why is Obama saying that Colombia is getting better at Human Rights. With laws like this I doubt it.

You could call Herencia Verde or any NGO listed in this link , they should know their way around. http://books.google.com/books?id=q_FROqap0F8C&pg=PA233&lpg=PA233&dq=fundacion herencia verde cali&source=bl&ots=52emI0Utfq&sig=oPUBoYMnnQXXHn34mc4LbC34PkA&hl=en&ei=_ntDSruINs6Ltgf28qSyAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6

Take Transporte Pance from the main Bus Terminal to La Voragine. From there you can walk to El Topacio ( I have done it many years ago). El Topacio has a pretty waterfall and its one of the official entrances to the park. The Bus route Blanco y Negro (Route 1) also goes to La Voragine. With the MIO I dont know if they changed some of these routes.

NELHENAO comments on Cali Day Trips

Day trips from Cali are many. Besides the ones mentioned before, you can go to Buga, to visit if the Bascilica ( I dont know if you are a catholic). Also you can go to the 2 plantation homes north of Palmira, which are set up as museums. El Paraiso and Piedechinche. To nature preserves you could go to Nirvana, east of Palmira. Also to El Topacio, up the foothills from Cali. There is a beautiful waterfall before you get there, next to river Pance, called "La chorrera del Indio". You can make a search on Youtube and there are a couple of beautiful videos. Going to Jamundi's plaza is also fun to get snacks and frozen fuit popsicles (helados). There have set a couple of Colonial farms around Jamundi with swimming pools. I forgot the names because I went to them many years ago.

NELHENAO comments on Derechos gay en Colombia, Gay Rights in Colombia

Hi David! Thanks for the insight. I grew up in a time in Colombia where my highschool classmates threw rocks at gays. Also, the police used to raid gay bars for no reason and put everybody (even friends of mine) in a truck and straight to jail. So it is very refreshing and liberating that my country is making progress in human rights for gays. So everytime there is something new about gay rights, or just to refresh people's memory I will post any news about gay rights in this forum. By the way people ask the same question about safety concerns about the same town, over and over again.

NELHENAO comments on Another Nuqui video clip. Amazing!

You welcome! I will keep digging looking for videos of Colombia. I posted one interesting video of Providencia, Colombia.

NELHENAO comments on Santa Marta

I was in Santa Marta in Sept of 2006. The best place to stay in my opinion is Taganga, the fishing village north of the city. It is quiet during the weekdays, small and laidback. My parents and I stayed at the Ballena Azul, charming hotel on the beachfront. The rooms are painted in white and have airconditioning. The food is good and well priced. You can hire small boats that take you to different bays and coves inside the Tayrona National Park, being this the highlight of my trip. The cove I enjoyed most was Granate. I met a boater by the name of Alex that was helpful and believe or not puntual. If you want to see pics let me know.

NELHENAO comments on Info Sobre Cali

I grew up in Cali and lived there for about 18 years. SurOriente is ok just have to be careful at night and take taxis that you have called first. My dad has a hotel by the Central Bus Station. Its called Hotel Colombia. Check it out on the hotel listings for Cali.

NELHENAO comments on My mother's one and only trip to Colombia

You are a great guy and GOd is going to give you back all the good things you did and will do for your mother. I lived in Colombia for 18 years and I would recommend 2 places. One is Salento and the other is Manizales. Both have cool climates so it would be suitable. The landscape in Salento is amazing with all those tall palm trees. Manizales is a small city with snowcap volcanoes in the background. Just outside the city there are hotsprings with a beautiful hotel. My parents went there and loved it. I dont know the name but I can call my mom and ask here.

NELHENAO comments on Religion is forbidden on this board?

This is a tourist forum. Not a religious forum. Living in different countries have taught me 1 important thing to get along specially if you dont know a person really well. Dont talk about religion or politics.

NELHENAO comments on Cali

Check out my dad's hotel http://nelhenao1.googlepages.com/home. The hotel is by the central bus station. Not exactly in downtown but very close to downtown and the nightspots in "La avenida Sexta". Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Always make sure that the meter is working.

Its anoying to travel outside the US and find people that love everything that is american so much to the extent that they loose their idendity. I may as well just stay in the US and become a redneck. I hope Colombia doesn't become like Venezuela in the sense that anything that is identified with the criolle (mixed races-dark population) or locally bred is synonomous with low class and vulgarity. No wonder you haven't seen Shakira's, Juanes or Carlos Vives from Venezuela. That is the price of looking so much outward for inspiration instead of appreciating your own background.

NELHENAO comments on Brief travel guide to Taganga

vacation in taganga I was there in Taganga during september for 3 nights, with my parents. We came very tired from my cousin's wedding in Cartagena. Its really difficult to relax at the beach in the Bocagrande beaches with all the street venders and hawkers. We were pleasantly surprised to see how much nicer people are in Taganga. We had the chance to take a boat to the small coves away from Playa Grande. The cove called El Remanso was specially beautiful. My last day I took the boat to Granate, inside the Tayrona National Park. I truly wish I would have another opportunity to get to explore the other bays in the National Park. We stayed at the hotel "La Ballena Azul". The prices were reasonable and the food very good. Next time I will definitely have to stay for a 1 week or more.
