mzzmerized comments on My Colombian dad

It's only because I can relate to some of those wild drug and booze soaked times you talk about...I don't know how I made it out of Colombia alive! I lived there off and on for 12 years and how I still have my health and sanity (?) is beyond me!!!

mzzmerized comments on My Colombian dad

Elmo your posts are my favorites because when you talk about Colombia, I really get it...THAT was the Colombia I knew...not all this pie in the sky stuff that some of these posters go on about...

mzzmerized comments on Almost 10 years!

This site initially struck a chord with me because when I lived in Colombia I really WAS poor but happy and I think Peter was too, when he first started this site out of Medellin. But I don't really mind how the site has changed...I actually love some of the more degenerate posts!

mzzmerized comments on My Colombian dad

I was a hairy little 22-year-old gringa...it was the late 70s...6 weeks in the Santa Marta area...I think a met a few of you...

mzzmerized comments on My Colombian dad

Awww...you were so cute...too bad I never ran into you in Colombia...but guess what? I ran into a couple who were JUST LIKE YOU!!!

mzzmerized comments on Almost 10 years!

I think I have been on this site almost since Peter started it up. I was back in Canada after many years in Colombia and feeling very lonely...as soon as I got online (late 90s) I typed in Colombia and found this site. I read it almost every day and I can always get a good laugh. And it turned out that Desi and I knew each other back in the 80s, teaching at the same English school...how's that for a small world!

mzzmerized comments on When will there ever be direct Miami San Anndres service?

When I used to go to SAI in the 70s there were flights from Miami to Bogota and Cali that stopped there...took the flight from Miami many times...and if you like San Andres now, you should have seen it then...paradise...Providencia is still paradise, but San Andres has more than quadrupled in size and population...

mzzmerized comments on Gringos in Colombia: An Object Lesson

Everybody always bashes the Incas for not inventing the wheel...ever consider how useless a wheel is in the Andes? The Incas had a sophisticated system of levers and pulleys, now why didn't the Mesopotamians think of that? Their surface was flat, perfect for wheels!!!

mzzmerized comments on Dichos

"La boca cerrada no entra moscas." and my favorite from the 80s: "El ploma o la plata."

mzzmerized comments on

Here is a comment and an observation...I lived in Colombia and Ecuador in the late 70s and early 80s...while in Quito I had an Ecuadorian boyfriend who accused me of giving him gonnorhea...I was mortified and went immdiately for a blood test...well, I didn't have it...and he made me show him the results of the blood tests to prove it...when he saw that he suddenly admitted to having screwed some "almost virgin" ecuatoriana...I will leave you guys to judge...the "liberated and thence promisuous north american" vs. the demure and innocent latina...

mzzmerized comments on Racial Attitudes of Colombian Women

I hardly ever post but... Elmo's post with the YouTube video brought back too many memories...all you people who think Colombia is some kind of utpoia of racial harmony...get real!!! Colombia is all about breeding up on the black-indigenous-white-racial scale...where the lighter your skin, the bigger prize you are..and you, the gringo, are the biggest prize of them all.

mzzmerized comments on Which music is closest to a Colombians heart?

OK...all you You Tube fanatics When I Google search You Tube all I get is a bunch of people and topics I have no interest in...how are you guys getting all these great videos??? Educate me!!!

mzzmerized comments on Demand and Supply? A small bra-burning rant before I return to my sweet self.

World's Oldest Profession It's not called that for no reason...it has always existed...but it makes me curious...they say women give sex to get love and men give love to get sex...rings true to me...but that puts men on some base level that I know isn't true of the majority of them...but at some point in many men's lives it seems like, yeah, hire a prostitute, that's an option...what is it? Is it the demanding nature of an erect penis as opposed to a woman's " finer nature" of a physical longing? Never mind "prepago" what about "preprogramado"?

mzzmerized comments on Desi's list

hey Desi I was in San Andres in January...can't I be on the list too?

mzzmerized comments on MOVING BACK!!!

you have a lot of good points about life in the US but I think that you blew it with your comment about waiting for your child to be born before you leave...if the US is such a nightmare why would you want your child to be born there...better leave now and have your child a pure Colombian citizen and not tainted with an United States citizenship...

mzzmerized comments on Question about Medellin girls

colombian women for all they have going for them (yes, they are very beautiful) they are very insecure next to a north american or european woman...put a reasonably pretty gringa in ANY city in colombia...no make-up and unshaven legs...and the colombian men will swarm over her...and the primped up, stilletto-clad colombian woman will be left behind, will be left behind, wondering WHY? the answer, as I have stated before, is that everyone likes the mysterious, the unusual, the unique...which is why all you balding, overweight gringos, fare so well down there...OK...let the bashing begin...

mzzmerized comments on The mental state of this Colombian

I know your problem... I think you have the "Cachaca Blues"...admit it...you miss her...you want her back...put that silver tongue of yours to work (you know what I mean) and get her to move back in!!! You KNOW that all the Barranquilleras in the world can't take her place...she's got you good, man.

mzzmerized comments on Colombian Islands

San Andres not nice? I have been going to Colombia and San Andres since 1978...of course, in 1978 San Andres was so different than it is now...a true paradise...but I was there a couple of months ago (OK, I did an all-inclusive from Canada but I'm not 22 any more)and it still has fabulous beaches, gorgeous water, friendly people, it is still low-key, a lot of fun, still cheap drugs (did I say that?). PM me and I will give you the name of the residencia I always used to stay at that is still in operation...$5.00 a day...quite basic...I still like it so much I am going back next winter...

mzzmerized comments on In response to the "ass groping thread"

My 2 cents on the groping incident Sometimes a precedent has to be set...for this individual 4 years for ass groping appears harsh...but the public groping of women in Colombia and the rest of Latin America has to stop...these incidents are nothing more than sexual assaults that have been winked over for decades. NO ONE has the right to physically attack another person who is walking on the street minding their own business. The sexual nature of these attacks is something that has needed to be addressed...it has happened to me from Mexico to Peru...from some asshole's hard-on pressed into me on a crowded bus to having my tube top pulled down by a passing motor cyclist (and scratch wounds). I DO NOT think 4 years is excessive. I applaud that judge...you guys need to walk a mile in our shoes if you think that it is just a "guy being a guy" type of offense.

mzzmerized comments on Child Prostitution

OK...my 2 cents worth I had the misfortune to actually become well acquainted with a pedophile when I lived in a small residencia in San Andres in the late 80s. He had been going there and to Costa Rica and Panama for years. He was not remotely ashamed of what he was doing...he told me all his techniques...find a poor family with a young daughter (a BIG family, lots of mouths to feed)befriend the family, buy them a refrigerator, a motorcycle, something like that...start taking the young girl on little outings (his age range was between 8 and 12). It is a horrible combination where the families MUST have known what was going on...but still let it happen...poverty can be so grinding that you turn a blind eye...and there are men who take total advantage of this. This guy was so old and so disgusting (physically as well as mentally)...he had an oxygen tank...was a coke addict...I almost used to puke to talk to him but it was also fascinating to have such a repulsive specimen telling the truth about pedophilia...about the grooming (they like to think of it as romancing) that takes place...they can justify ANYTHING. The guy was in his 60s at the time...how many lives had he laid waste to? I later heard he had died...and I was happy and I hope there is a special place in hell for him.

And just to tell you that when you are in these third world countries you are not in Kansas anymore...the owner of the residencia knew exactly what he was up to there...her granddaughter was one of his fantasy objects (although I don't think anything came of it even though he left her his motorcycle)and she was actually very sad when told of his passing...he had been a good and generous customer of her establishment.

You need to know that it is not the same mentality as we have developed up here with all our physical comforts.

mzzmerized comments on Women traveling to Cali

You'll be fine... 4 - 0 Go!

mzzmerized comments on Frommer's South America, 2004

What about the South American Handbook? Hasn't anyone heard of that? Great, mostly accurate info...not much scare-mongering, mostly logical cautionaries...lots of great info on hotels and restaurants, fitting any budget...transportation, places to go...even some of the smallest pueblos get descriptions...their info is continuously updated by actual travellers to the country...it is the "Bible" of travel in South America...

mzzmerized comments on Colombia Trip

Show No Fear Attitude is everything...it is a good thing to do those other countries first...you will feel very confident by the time you get to Colombia...a cocky, fearless attitude (I'm sorry all you nay-sayers out there) will carry you through a lot of dodgy neighborhoods (if you are budget-travelling). Keep your wits about you, look behind you often (often just the fact that you look aware will get you through) and forge ahead. Colombia is the greatest, but it's not for everyone.

mzzmerized comments on Close Encounter of the Corroncho Kind...

colombiche and elmo Man, you guys GOT to get together...there are FLAMES comin' outta your messages...may I add that I would like to be there when (not IF) it happens? (Just the voyeur in me coming out!!!)

mzzmerized comments on Language Shock....

todo or toro? HaHa...In the beginning I was always told that my "todo" sounded like "toro"...I had to really discipline myself to make a more "th" with "todo".

By the way, I communicate with spanish-speaking friends all the time...and they always put a "b" where I would put a "v"...example "chevere" (that's the way I would spell it)...they often spell it "chebere"...and I don't think that's right!!! But who am I to say???

We communicate mostly by msn and I am surprised by their spelling mistakes! (I am not talking about general instant messaging abreviations.)

mzzmerized comments on Oh no it´s raining!

the rain, the rain One thing you can't do is iron clothes when it's raining outside...at least not in San Andres...I don't remember it being an issue in Cali...but don't ask me why...you will catch a cold or get electrocuted or something...

mzzmerized comments on Be Careful Who You Meet at the Meetups!

his stupidity is hardly the point... He didn't only run to a developing country because he thought he couldn't get extradited from there...he went to Colombia so he could pursue his sexual interests. There are guys like him all over Mexico, Central America and South America (and other poverty-stricken countries). Thank God that dirt-bag got extradited...but how many children did he have contact with while he was there? I hope someone is retracing his steps...

mzzmerized comments on Colombia's Place in the World: The Economist Rankings

Hairy armpits/legs Gee Blue, maybe you should be targeting 10-year-olds, then there wouldn't be any of that disgusting female body hair that you find so repugnant. Or maybe a blow-up doll, yeah, that might be better, you could just spew your hatred of women on an inanimate object. I wonder what YOU look like...hmmmm...I am imagining a big hairy gut...

mzzmerized comments on Blacks in colombia?

Oh yeah? And are you living in Colombia or in the U.S.? Easy to be proud of your heritage when it isn't dragging you down every time you step out the door.

mzzmerized comments on Blacks in colombia?

Oh, give me a break... Ayone who thinks that the class system in Colombia isn't partially predicated on skin colour should shake off their rose-coloured glasses. EVERYONE wants to be considered white...don't you dare tell a mestizo they have sangre de indio...nobody wants to be considered "coloured". Blacks are so marginalized in Colombian society, they don't even count. One of my best friends in Colombia could pass for a native Canadian...but he claims his ancestry as puro castellano...yeah right...AND looks down on the black costenos...go figure...

mzzmerized comments on Colombian Women please help, Culture barrier!

I'm sorry to have to say this... But she's just not that into you. Even before I read your response I knew you weren't talking about sex. But it is not a Colombian woman thing...this is universal... I would say she is about to leave...her true feelings are showing. And to get back to sex, I bet there is not much happening in that department either. When you are in love, you certainly don't mind your lover going on about you to his friends...unless she's hiding from the mafia or something.

mzzmerized comments on Steps to understanding Colombia

there is a Dickens quote that applies to foreigners living in Colombia for any extended period..."It was the best of time, it was the worst of times." The best people I have ever met in my life were Colombians...the worst people too. The best times I ever had in my life were in Colombia...the worst too. It is a country of extremes but it is never boring...and you will never be more alive than when you are in Colombia.

mzzmerized comments on Is this Spanish punctuation or a Colombian thing?

OK...I have another problem...SPELLING!!! Spanish is my second language, so how come I can differentiate between the "v" and the "b"? I see this all the time! Colombians spelling words like "barios" instead of "varios" or "estube" instead of "estuve". And don't even get me started on "la mano" and "el arma"!!!! (al poder)

mzzmerized comments on I need info about Medellin

Sorry about the typos!!!!! Keys are sticking on my keyboard!!!!

mzzmerized comments on The Colombian male, ugly ducklings or not?

Desi, I'm a little surprised at your comment "(if you can get in, some tend to discriminate non-white men and are stopped at the door)". It sounds either condesecending by you or reflective of something I never imagined would take place place in a liberal country like Sweden. Does your Colombian husband get barred entry from some establishments in Stockholm? Or is he white enough to make the grade (and, of course, he must get in while he is with "nordic" you). This whole entry of yours smacked of some kink of racial superiority that I have never heard from you before.

mzzmerized comments on Observations from recent 20 day trip

The No-Nightlife Conundrum What lots of people tend to forget when they go to Colombian cities is that these are not resort destinations. People work, they have lives, they are not partying 24/7. Just like back home, people go out on weekends. YOU may be on holiday and looking for action on a Tuesday night, but the Bogotanos, Calenos, etc. all have to go to work the next day.

mzzmerized comments on Age gaps in relationships between women and men from Col. and abroad

old gringo and "where's the beef?" was that your young wife that typed that in? (hehehe...sorry...couldn't resist!)

mzzmerized comments on How did you meet your novia or Colombia

I am sorry I ever started this because now you are going to generalize that i am generalizing and you can therefore dismiss everything I have to say.

mzzmerized comments on How did you meet your novia or Colombia

Old Gringo I am not entirely convinced this is nature's way...it is more the way of economics...and it has existed like this since memory...but that does not make it NATURAL.
And I am not ticked off (although if I was middle-aged in Colombia I might be!) because in my country I am not at all washed up...I am in my 40s and I can still get plenty of men, and, by golly, in latin america, even more! (That attrraction works both ways you know.)
I am going to come out of the closet a bit here and tell you that in Colombia I had the misfortune to meet 2 different pedophiles (one European and one American). What they got away with there was absolutely disgusting...and it has unfortunately coloured my perception of the whole May/December romantic scenario.
I AM NOT AT ALL INSINUATING THAT THE MALE MEMBERS OF THIS BOARD ARE PEDOPHILES!!!! I am only trying to express why I may come across as overly strident or overly cynical...it is just that I saw first-hand what the power of money can do to people's judgement.

mzzmerized comments on How did you meet your novia or Colombia

Sorry Old Gringo That you find me vitriolic and oh-so-typical of what you are trying to get away from. And I am sorry that your experiences with your female peers have made you so bitter about us gringas. But your sense of humour persuades me that you have been luckier than most in your pursuit of happiness in latina-landia. I have been going to Colombia for more than 25 years (maybe i should call myself "Old Gringa"!) and work with Colombian refugees here in Canada. My opinions are certainly not meant to be anger-inspiring. I get upset at the objectifying of Colombian women, where their thoughts and dreams and ambitions are trivialized and ignored. Where their attractiveness and youth become their only assets. Where women over 30 or even 25 are no longer considered viable mates. i am sorry Old Gringo, but these things tick me off.

mzzmerized comments on How did you meet your novia or Colombia

Old Gringo... Cold hearted? Me? Sorry, that's not the case...just spent too many years in the tropics...and while there, watching guys like you make fools of themselves over all those cute young things, thinking that they really wanted you. But, hey, it's great...everyone is getting what they are REALLY after...but, Old Gringo, you know that you and guys like yourself could NOT have that happening back home, I don't care how much you say that that you don't like North American women and that it is your preference to go after latinas. I know you realize that and that's why you are so obviously not into marrying anybody, just playing the field in a third world country where bad economic conditions for women have turned you into someone desirable to pass a few weeks with.

mzzmerized comments on How did you meet your novia or Colombia

Cowboy You say "to each his own"...but it is easy for a guy of average looks, income, etc. to get dazzled by the beauty and seeming availabilty of young Colombian women...to the point of thinking "why go after someone my own age when I have this plethora of young, gorgeous women to choose from?" It is a huge mistake, because...oh, to hell with it...all you guys will just end up with gringa-bashing and pie-in-the-sky dreams of that 20-year-old body curled up against you for all eternity...

mzzmerized comments on How did you meet your novia or Colombia

This is a great story!!! I believe I have said this several times already...Colombia is full of gorgeous, loving women who are NOT 20 years old! The country is very youth-oriented so these women just get kind of left by the wayside...if they were in Canada, for example, there would be an abundance of men their ages for them to hook up with! All you middle-aged guys looking for that magic elixir of youth...you are wasting your time! The 20-year age difference WILL matter! Be realistic and go for a more mature woman, that is where you will find your genuine happiness!

mzzmerized comments on [deleted]

Any gringo or gringa can get lucky in latin america...when you combine the economic disparities with the attraction of someone exotic looking it adds up to a win-win situation. North American women that back home are not considered attractive because they don't meet the unattainable standards of beauty that predominate our media for women are pleasantly surprised by all the male attention they receive in Latin America. The same goes for North American men, with a little cash in their pockets they suddenly have hordes of attractive women to choose from. This is all good. The only thing that keeps bugging me is posters like this guy who want to cling to the illusion that all this is due to their own sex appeal or to the colombianas inherent high sex drive. They are humping your wallet, amigo, nothing else.

mzzmerized comments on Aura y Calipro

Well, let me tell you... what really ticks me off is that I came to this thread too late to see the infamous pictures. I'm sure that I could have come up with a few comments to help push the thread over the 300 mark.

mzzmerized comments on Why are Colombian men so attracted to blonde gringas?

Blond (dyed) Colombian Beauty Queens What amazes me is in all the beauty pageants the dyed blond will win over the natural latina-looking competitors...this has been a trend for a while now. If Colombia would choose their natural beauties over that fake blond look they would win every international competition they enter!

mzzmerized comments on Why do the women change once in the USA...as I am told?

Kernow and Mr. Hollywood..you said it so well Usually it is a woman who will try to say something like this and then they get bashed for being a fat, jealous, hairy, femi-nazi. The truth is, genuine, lasting love and respect come when the 2 people are on a semi-equal footing, be it age-wise, attractiveness, socio-economic status or any combination thereof. Where there is a great disparity in those conditions the couple would be better off staying in Colombia. Everyone on this board recognizes the attraction for the exotic, and Colombian men and women are definitely attractive and exotic, as they will assuredly find out when they move to North America or Europe. If at least you stay reasonably within your age group your chances of a successful relationship outside of Colombia will be that much stronger.

mzzmerized comments on Best placed to be New Years week in Colombia (besides Cali)

Try San Andres During the Christmas/New Year's period (about 10 days) there are tons of people on the island...Colombians mostly but a fair share of Europeans and North Americans...all the nightclubs are hopping...during the day there is lots of stuff to do from lazing on a beach to snorkelling to the rumba taking place every day on johnny Cay...I always loved it during the Christmas season.

mzzmerized comments on Colombian Women

elmodefoque don''t let this go to your head... but you are practically the only one on this board who REALLY knows Colombian mentality - male and female. And Desi as well. You are from there and Desi has lived there for years. Anyway, as I'm sitting here, three sheets to the wind, on my fifth vodka for the night, I was reading your posts about the sixties and seventies (I was in Colombia from the late seventies to 1990). You are so right about the mentality then!!! I can just picture you losing out in Colombia, but then those same qualities working for you in the US! But there was always this fringe element in Colombia, us gringitas, who took up the cause of you butifarra guys (to the horror of the upper class Uribe-types; they could never understand why some blonde would go for some wild guajiro or isleno rasta...hahaha)...carry on carrying on el-mo...you are el sabio of the board, reality-checking these wild-eyed gringos who think they have found the antidote to all their masculine deficiencies...
