mvefwd comments on Poblado - Best or Worst of Medellin?

I just returned from my second MDE trip. The first time, I stayed in Poblado. I was nice, if you like that posh sort of things. I have to agree with TomTom & Kiko... Laureles is the place for me.

mvefwd comments on Visiting Americans; Usually Leave Too Much Of a Tip So Stop It!

Choice IMHO it's all about choice. It's not about being cheap or gratuitous. I tip because I have been blessed enough to do so. I believe that if someone provides a service, and provides it well, there is nothing wrong with rewarding their assistance. That might not work for you, but it works for me and I feel good doing it. It drives my GF (Calena) crazy, but that's the way I am.

That waitress, bellhop, shoeshine will spend & save more of what they earn. Their purchases and savings (in banks) will help stimulate the economy. It's a win/win situation.

Again, it's my humble opinion. It works for me.

mvefwd comments on It's not only violent in Colombia

Violence BLACKSBURG, Va. - Police and university authorities faced pressure Tuesday to explain how a gunman apparently evaded detection after killing two people and then went on to kill 30 others two hours later in America’s worst shooting rampage.

The bloodbath ended Monday with the gunman committing suicide, bringing the death toll to 33 and stamping the campus in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains with unspeakable tragedy, perhaps forever.

14 Years My Calena is 22. I am 36. We have been together for two years and we are very happy. Her sister is 28 and her brother in law is 52. When we were just dating, I overheard a conversation where one of my GF's friends asked her, "Why dont you date someone your age?" My GF replied, "If I wanted a boy, I would get pregnant and have one."

mvefwd comments on colombian men

24 Carole... You are 24. He is 24. Neither of you know how to wipe your own ass yet. He's jealous because he is insecure. He is insecure because he doesnt have the confidence of a true man. He is still a boy. Dont get it twisted... you are not absolved of guilt either... You are still girl. You are more mature than he is, but you are far from a woman. Baby Girl, if you are still hanging with your girls, at bars, clubs and the like, then you are not ready yet. All you did was trade your Barbie Dolls in for live women. They are just toys for you to play with. Eventually, one day you will just not need to play with little girls toys any more...

The sex is great??? So what!!! It should be, you are both 24 years old. A relationship is much more than sex. What are you going to do if it works with this guy? Ten years from now, you will be looking back at all you didn't do. Your life will be filled with resentment and contempt. You are too young. And so is he. Live life... Travel... See the world. Learn different cultures. Learn different men, women, whatever... More importantly, learn yourself. Find out who you are. At 24, you are not ready & shouldn't even be thinking about one boyfriend. Like Kalder said... be he Colombian, Black, Irish, Chinese, Maori, or Klingon... When you are ready, you will know. Until then, move forward!!!

NJ I love NJ... I have been all over the US and besides South Fla. or San Diego, CA. There is no other place to be. Less than an hour from the greatest city in the world... NYC. The only reason I would choose SD or S.Fla is because of the weather. NJ is home that is until Medellin calls.

As for food.... Variety is the spice of life... Try it all, learn what you like and dont like. But try it all, it won't kill you.

Thanks I was raised that education is the key to enlightenment. This forum has done a lot for my immersion into Colombian culture. I will learn fluent spanish. (Colombian spanish) It might not make a difference with my GF's mom, but it will make a world of difference for me. I hope that others find what they need here.

Qubo, sorry... I moved here just to be closer to work. I've been here for 10 years now. I love it's multicultualism. And it led me to the love of my life.

Yes!! We Speak English.... I'm so glad that you brought up this topic. I am glad to find out that there our others that share my view. I thought I was crazy. I honestly thought there was something wrong with me. I am black. My GF was born in Cali. We have been together about a year. She has been here in the US for six years and her mother for about nine years. Her mother does not speak any english. And refuses to try. Qubo, it dives me insane. She goes about her daily routine... Los Americas Bakery, calling card centers, Girotel, the entire Morris Avenue gambit. And then Parador Rojo, Ole or The Station House Cafe on the weekends. She refuses to watch english TV or listen to english radio. Loves reggaeton but hates hip hop. In my elementary spanish I cannot illustrate who I really am. She knows me, but has no idea who I am. It is a real source of distrust and disdain. It's frustrating. To add insult to injury, I am black. I am university educated, gainfully employed and I treat her daughter with respect, patience and compassion. However, in her myopic view, I am no different than the uneducated ghetto urchins that she passes on her way thru, as you put it Qubo, la cuna de los colombianos. It's infuriating. She doesn't know the language and refuses to learn. Therefore, she has no means of being educated to what is going on outside her world. Then she has to gall to tell me, a black man, that I dont know what its like to be discriminated against. It's bananas...

mvefwd comments on Dating a girl from Colombia

A Colombiana
... a special young paisita (non-pro) convinced me to come out of my shell. At Thaico, in Parque Lleras, she gave me a pep talk. She was born in Medellin and raised in Texas. She noticed that I understood spanish well and convinced me to become more of a part of the conversation. I told her that despite, two years of spanish and three years of latin in high school and countless relationships with many latinas, I just did not feel comfortable attempting to speak spanish. She persuaded me to try. I did & it worked. I made a few more friends. I even had the chance to see how jealous a Columbiana can be. You see, we met a group at Thaico & I befriended a gorgeous 'mona' that went to the University of Medellin. We talked, me in broken spanish and her in broken english. My boys & her girls decided to go to another club. I dont remember the name of it, but it was around the corner from Folio.... Anyway, once inside we were separated. And like a little kid, I decided to play with my new toy & started talking to another beautiful paisa. Not even ten minutes into my new conversation, the mona from Thaico was leading me away by the arm & she was not happy. I've been cursed-out in spanish before, I wish it was unfamiliar territory.

mvefwd comments on What documentation do I need to drive in Colombia?

International Driver's Licenses Please pass this on to anyone you know. International Driver's Licenses are not valid in the USA. You are permitted to drive if you have a valid DL in your home county & if your visa is valid. When your visa expires, so does your driving privileges. AAA endorces these items but the items have no validity. Buyer beware... I know this is a blog regarding Colombia, but I just dont want anyone tho have any problem when they travel here.
