Cheap traveling in Chiapas (NYT article)

The New York Times has a good article on cheap travel in Chiapas, Mexico: http://frugaltraveler.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/14/frugal-mexico/

"Yes, Chiapas is cheap — as is much of Mexico, where the exchange rate has, since September, zoomed from 10 to 13 pesos to the dollar. But Chiapas’s affordability is compounded by its relative obscurity. Apart from the packs of post-collegiate backpackers experimenting with Maya mysticism and awkward hairstyles, few American tourists venture there."

A perfect Poorbuthappy destination :)

love love love love LOVE Chiapas!

Drove down there from Canada a few years back and hope to get back one day!!

Funny thing to I met this guy Chip the article speaks of, and chilled at his home which had an assorted crew of young and old Mexicans and foreigners living/staying there as well.

I believe his specialty in anthropology is textiles and he had some cool Mayan folks visiting his house and San Cris for the day - got some great info on the tradition of processing and utilizing Maguey fibres to make string bags.

But really, quite touristy in San Cris and Palenque. Of course, there are also many interesting and largely unexplored villages in Chiapas where people like anthroplogists would end up!
