actually Rikito I was using the name like Cayita said, upon reading what you've written above I definately feel compelled to change my screen name and will. If you knew anything about me, that is definately now what i'm about. Yes, I think we all should worry about both of these type of people.

It'd just be great if the high peso will drive out some of the sex offenders and child predators. Good people welcome.

in colombia in your own home (not rented), load as many pump shot guns as you like. For instance, you may have shipped down digital gun safes, one for the principal bedroom and one for the closet next to the front puerta blindada, 3/4 inch stainless thick door. With a 4 digit code you would have access to your shotguns in both places and then say 2 glocks with 9mm hi-load clips of 33 rounds. And, for our fictitous example, if you owned property like this in colombia, getting permits to carry the hi load 33 round 9's can be had.

But, that would just be a guess of what someone may do if they wanted to protect themselves.

mecca comments on Can an American own a house in Colombia?

depends on where panthdave i've got places in both and it just depends on location. Just like the states. You really have to study it well to make some valuable comparisons.

mecca comments on Calling experts on Colombian building

Terry its' that the taller buildings. Are all cable tensioned floors. The vertical supports are up and bolted or rivited from floor to floor and then the high tension cables are strung for the floors. In buildings like that the floors are only a total of about 3-4 inches thick of concrete and it's not the concrete holding things up, it's the cables. The concrete would weigh too much. So essentially, it's a structure of cables and I or H beam support with glass on the walls and thin concrete floors. Amazing for sure. And if you look at the torre de cali, they brought in the (swiss???) company which set it up with rollers below and fluid mobile counterweights. To strongly dampen the sway from wind and of course earth quakes.

mecca comments on Calling experts on Colombian building

jajaja cayita, that's funny. Poco, that's a good looking kitchen.

Who knows why they do things like this. We had the same switches low and ripped all of that out. It's nuts. Yes, the single bulb in the center of a large bedroom, what's with that.

If you're getting to a new apto. or house in colombia, you HAVE to have someone that knows construction advise on the wiring. Not the colombian builder, you need a north american view on that if your'e going to be happy. You'll want probably 3 times more switches controlling 3 times more fixtures at a bare minimum. You have to do that stuff up front as you channel out the walls and ceiling for all your wires. Make sure you do this with alot of thought, ALOT. The cost is not that great when doing it from new as an extra. And it makes the home far, far more attractive for resale.

I agree on the style of mixing ceiling lamps with sconces and hanging depending on height.

As far as construction. Apto. building floors are typically 15 cm thick then there is a space about another 15-20 cm where drains and plubming is located then the ceiling of the floor below which is another 15 cm. The walls are brick (actually non supporting) the columns which are concrete with re-bar are what holds up the ceiling and separates the floors. The floors and ceiling are also concrete with re-bar, there is the obvious plaster on the walls and ceilings that affords up to about 3 cm so you can channel in all your electric wires and some shallow fixtures. Above that you get into concrete.

We've got 2.7 meter ceilings, i've seen higher and lower, it's strange for sure.

Pod, the roof membrane is the "turney". That will be the obviously what is keeping the water out. But, above this, they usually put the clay tiles on to help keep off heat. The tiles do not really shed water they are for heat.

Then below the "turney" or membrane as you call it. You can use either felt, or thermo-acustica, or the spray paper that you're talking about. All of those are fine.

Then Machimbre. You did it right, first the supports, then machimbre, then you'll build the external roof, being the felt then turney (membrane) then tejas.

Then do the inside of the roof. In south america, usually they will put no insulation on the inside of the machimbre. You can. They just usually dont.

You really have to look at this thing well. Are you only trying to shed heat? How well sealed are your doors and windows??

If you're only trying to shed heat. AND your doors and windows are not US spec, (ie double glass, seals on doors, etc). If it's not build like an airtight US house. Don't bother with insulation inside the machimbre. Unless it's real cheap. Cause a small crack in the window frame or door, negates all the insulation you could do..

Venting of the roof is for the air-tight houses/roof ONLY. You'll know if your place is airtight or not...Pod, you konw what US houses are like..... It's to control moisture in and out and prevent rot. It's not going to make a huge difference if it's not super sealed.

Is there more than just the machimbre in the pics? as far as a roof?

If you had a real high steeple type wood roof, you'd want to vent it as the top would catch alot of moisture, but looking at that pic, no need.

Hope this helps.

mecca comments on house projects

hey pod, curious. What do they put outside the machimbre in argentina? From outside in. Turney, then thermo-acoustica, then machimbre. Then, ? before the drywall. More insulation?

mecca comments on house projects

good point houstongal pod, i've got a guy from poland that during the cold war was responsible for painting replicas for a museum. They would store the origionals in safe places and display replicas. He is excellent, you can pick your piece, he will duplicate it, actually to the faults in the origional. He does them in oil and you can roll them into tubes and ship down. Not super cheap, but excellent work and you may want to pick say 1 piece for center attention.

mecca comments on house projects

Looking good pod that machimbre looks good from inside. With the steel supports, are they going to dry wall inside. I like the look of the machimbre. ALOT...!! You could cover the metal supports to look like beams.

MC, just being cautious keeping the information to a minimum, my places are not for rent or commercial usages so no need to promote them. Lots of nuts en la red, tu sabes senor.

In Colombia they also use the N word. Yes, argue all you like, they pronounce it in english and it'll be tough to find an upper class family that does not know this word. Desi, your imput?

mecca comments on * Calling All Dogs!

Rubito, I do agree with what you are saying about self-entitlement. You're exactly right, no-one including any of the women in colombia are entitled to a peso. People have to earn it, they have to be worthy or they get nothing. I agree with that COMPLETELY. I've seen that attitude down there and in the states and it makes me sick.

And Leeroy, I do not agree that a girl turning to prostitution is better than finding an older wealthy man for security, and i'm not an older man either.

mecca comments on * Calling All Dogs!

This is not directed to anyone here, this is just a life observation. Sexual deviants, as well as other deviants, have no idea that their thought process is so far from the norm. They have no idea that what they do and say are considered repulsive by the majority. Therefore, they will, with little to no inhibition say and do things. ie. a paedofile might sit in a conversation with mutiple people and then watch children walk by looking at them in a sexual manner. The whole time the group watching the eyes of the person. This disconnect can not be solved, there is no rehabilitation, they have no remorse. If fact, they may offer verbal remorse and then resume activities with the first opportunity.

Since the beginning of time, these people have been dealt with by society. That dealing has varied from simple punishment, to abandonment to stoning.

This is not a political debate, this is not one where you can just pledge to God that there has been a sin and things will be better.
No law can tell you what is right or wrong, if you actually look to the law for this and get either a good or bad feeling from your actions, you very well may be in the above group.

This goes to the moral fiber of each of us and the community.

mecca comments on * Calling All Dogs!

exploitation That i agree with completely Rubito regarding the mutual issue. Just as in business, there is a mutual reason for working with someone. The same in relationships with the opposite sex. The woman who meets the older man that is wealthy finds herself strangely attracted. Well, possibly because he can provide a lifetime of security. She begins having feelings that she's attracted (and this becomes a real attraction for sure) to him physically and if he gives her positive feedback in forms of material items that make her more comfy, new maserati, etc. she falls deeper. He has a gentle way about him that is loving and not a threat to her. She falls deeper as this gives her security from all the guys her age that have dumped her for better looking girls. He tells her all the right verbage, possibly using his owned learned (or studied) form of NLP, she falls deeper with the words and the thoughts of his warm heart, tender words, and financial position.

He begins to tire of her, and withdraw a bit. She has become addicted to the whole package and feels a physical withdraw pain (not unlike a drug addiction). She does not see it as a simple financial issue, she actually does not see that at all, she has fallen much deeper, with the way he is with verbage, visualization (as in the older comfortable guy has a future which is real).

This withdraw by the older wealthy man draws her in so close that, for the first time she is really love struck and unable to live without him (or so she feels). He comes back a bit and she is so overjoyed she commits to him like she never has before.

Eventually the older, wealthy man moves on, as he has his pick of a hundred other girls (or for whatever reason). This older wealthy man is not going to risk his financial situation with a marriage and possible break up.

Once he's moved on and she has gone through some or all of the stages of grief. She begins looking for another man. Though something is different. She is strongly attracted to older men now, those older men that are yes financially secure, with a future and a vision.

Sound familiar?

mecca comments on * Calling All Dogs!

That's well put Leeroy and correct. No question about it. I remember a friend that was on his way to the west coast in his personal jet (not leased). This was about 10 years ago and he was probably 30 at the time (this guy's mas o menos well known so no names). Well, this guy was with his girlfriend and there was another young couple with them. During the flight they were all drinking and the one guy (from the other couple) falls asleep.

Well this girl, (not the girlfriend) that was with the other guy, proposes a mile-high club invite with the plane's owner. She was intoxicated by the wealth. There is no question this is a real effect on women in any culture. And you bet Leeroy, the colombian men use this to the maximum degree.

mecca comments on * Calling All Dogs!

Since when does legal have anything to do with moral? This is where we have gone wrong in this world. People looking to statutes for moral guidance, instead of good solid family.

This is the same thinking that north americans use to "bash" Tom Cruise for talking out against drugs and jumping on a couch and proclaim him a freak. The whole time, not listening to what he's saying, no drugs, good family values, caring relationships which matter.

Pod, i agree with most of what you're saying. With the exception of paedofiles. I know you phrased it as danger to "poor women", but these paedofiles are real and what they do is horrible.

no rubito this is just a touch of the N deal. Someone in that group from Medellin has contacted my attorney about renting one of my places in Colombia. I had no idea who these people were until i had someone look into it. Refused further contact.

Don't you people have your own websites to bother, why bring attention to a good website. Just go on to your pedophile websites and wait until you are arrested, please.

mecca comments on The mid market Peso rate is now 2,001 this morning. The ATM exchange well

don't miss the huge sucking sound and US dollars are sucked out of colombia. The drop below 2000 will most probably impact any foreign investment. The sad part is that the end result will hit the guy or gal trying to find a 400k a month cop job.

mecca comments on SKYPE right now is FREE, don't forget

web's right this is not perfect. something to keep in mind, learn about voip now. There are major changes occuring in wireless. The free frequency which all wireless (ricochet)runs on is just that free. Much unlike the billions invested in "paid" cellular frequency. In the next 5 years you will walk around with a wireless phone that is actually a computer working on the free frequency not the cellular paid frequency. cell companies are scrambling to get on board with this, as you know encryption is actually "better" with these computer based systems. Things are changing and viop is it's nameo..

mecca comments on SKYPE right now is FREE, don't forget

but webmanco if you've got wireless in your house, or wireless at the airport or using the wireless at chipe in cali. You can use a Netgear phone like this

http://www.netgear.com/Products/CommunicationsVoIP/Skype/SPH101.aspx

This phone replaces the computer, it's pre-loaded with skype software. So wherever you are with wifi, it hooks up and gives you free calls from this handset (wifi phone) to another wifi phone or computer...additionally in your house , you can use a USB Skype adapter found at (www.jr.com) and then plug in your normal cordless phone...walk around the house on your cordless phone talking on skype free to another wifi handset in chipe or another computer wherever in the world.

it's cool,

Just some standard items if you can remember. Thanks

"One girl has a boyfriend who lives in the States." "She comes over once every week or two to earn a little extra."

Nothing like high moral standards to give gringos a good name throughout the world.

mecca comments on SKYPE right now is FREE, don't forget

Gringoloid, It came in my email about a week ago (i first posted it that day). Nothing showed up on the skype page, just that email. And as you now know, you just dial like you had unlimited skypeout credit. You can call anyone for as long as you want. I'm doing the same thing calling colombia all day.

A little trick on this, if you call with poor quality, keep hanging up and calling back, once you get a good line in colombia, it's great.

mecca comments on Knicker robbers in Pereira - watch out ladies ;-)

vicshere, there is a joke in colombia When you ask a girl from Pereira to sit down, she lays down. Even people say Perreira with 2 r's to make this point. Ask around, it's true.

mecca comments on Reinventing Yourself in Colombia

Those are some interesting points Miguel, i know all about the gold diggers in the US. True there are there in Colombia also. It's just the training the gold diggers have in the US is to get into your life (not just your pocket book) and they have this amazing sense of self-entitlement. ME ME ME ME ME ME.

In any culture, that drives me crazy. As soon as i see the signs of a self-entitled girl she gets the boot.

Well Poco, good point about The Hef, he's got all the resources and that would be the life for most men (me included). You can have a similar experience in South America with not near the funds.
