Man Tequila comments on Bogota vs Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires: - better shopping, better food and booze (I could live with steak, salad, ice cream for the rest of my days), more sophisticated, more high culture, more arrogant, less variety of food, somewhat cheaper, costlier and longer travel Bogota: - much more fun, friendlier people, more variety of food, better dancing (tango: more theory than fun), more expensive, shorter flights, better music, not so many bookshops BsAs has more to offer a tourist, maybe, but there is something about Colombia other places cannot match.

Man Tequila comments on How do you call the letter V

There is no need for petty officials to be sarcastic either. Learning Spanish as a third language, I learned "v pequena" ("ve"), but things differ from place to place. In these cases where people are split, both are usually right.

Man Tequila comments on Snyder's Pretzels in Colombia

Snyder's pretzels are darn good, but $6 for a bag of nuggets?

Man Tequila comments on Davalos twins of Medellin...amazing

I think some more photos are in order so that we may properly judge their hotness.

Man Tequila comments on Colombianadas

¨Numero dos¨ would be well understood in many Spanish countries.

Man Tequila comments on Question about usage of "Mi Corazón"

I have seen people use ¨mi corazon¨ when asking the female clerk for a hotel room. It is like a waitress calling you ¨honey¨ or ¨dear¨.

Man Tequila comments on Gabriel Garcia Marquez tops list of most influential books of the past 25 years

I´m glad to hear it, but not sure in what way it was influential... you mean it inspired other authors to use a style of magical realism?

Man Tequila comments on The "Costs" of Medical Care

I agree with many of Escanch´s points, but disagree with others. Ultimately, I think government intervention can lower costs substantially, but can also raise them depending on how things are done. Doctors incomes in the US were substantially lowered by the rise of HMOs, I know some American doctors who make more money in Canada. But defensive medicine is a huge cost, one that goes hand in hand with improved technology. I think it is hard to argue the US system is so efficient that there is not ample scope for improvement.

Man Tequila comments on 11 children in Brampton, Ont., get double dose of H1N1 flu shot by mistake

This might leave the kids with a fear of vaccinations, and is regrettable, but really is not a hanging crime.

Man Tequila comments on Best City/area to live in Mexico.

Guanajuato is cheap and excellent, a couple of well-known people who wrote about their Mexican travel experiences settled there. I do like Guadalajara, which is a lot bigger.

Man Tequila comments on Hostels in (the CITY of) Guanajuato

There are many hostels in Guanajuato, mostly in the Cantarranas street downtown and the Baratillo. These rarely fill up, so you would find a spot without reservations.. They run eight to twelve dollars a night. A nice hotel (I like Meson del Rosario) might run fifty dollars a night. The Lonely Planet lists plenty, but I have not stayed in them. The lady who runs the Bagel Cafetin (Cafe Bageltin) is very nice, and runs a hostel, I might try that. She also makes her own bagels and serves delicious coffee.

Man Tequila comments on EAFIT, people who studied there or are studying there, please step inside

I can´t talk about EAFIT. But I would put in a good word for Guanajuato (search it here).

Man Tequila comments on Spirit Airlines -- is there a catch?

You sometimes get what you pay for, but I like Spirit. I might not if Detroit was incovenient for me, it is their second largest hub.

Man Tequila comments on Cartagena and Colombia: First Impression

I like Cartagena, and find Colombian cities are more similar than most Colombians would admit. La Olla Cartagenera is pretty good, but it is all about the comida arabe. Taxi prices are fixed, and you should know what the price is. Ask a taxi, and if it is not the correct price or 1am in the middle of nowhere, another cab will be along in 20 seconds. Rip-offs exist in Colombia, but are usually small amounts. Do buy some good music CDs, those 3 disc sets, but do not pay more than 5000 pesitos. If you go to McDonald´s in the ghetto, the staff might live close by. I occasionally go to American McD´s and have not had your experience.

Man Tequila comments on Carlos Vives In Concert in Colombia

I saw Carlos in a Cartagena concert. He puts on a good show.

Clowns scare people. What valuable service do they provide? Headline: Shortage of balloon animals threatens world peace?

Man Tequila comments on good beginner dance classes and advanced spanish classes under $10 USD/hour?

You have a few choices. You could buy a DVD that shows you basic salsa steps, and many women will be happy to teach you more. I did go to Academia Dance in Patio Bonito and I took the seven hour salsa course. It is excellent. I crammed the whole thing into two days, though, which is probably not the way to go.

Man Tequila comments on Six months studying spanish- is Ecuador/Guatemala my best bet?

I had a good experience learning Spanish in Guanajuato, Mexico at the Escuela de Idiomas. I wrote about it extensively, search this blog for ¨Guanajuato¨.

Man Tequila comments on SPIRIT Airlines sucks!!!!

Cheap airlines do have annoying luggage policies, but they are no secret. Spirit is a cheesy name, but so are lots of airline names. I could care less what the airline is called if they get me there on time in one piece for cheap coin.

Man Tequila comments on Hooters Medellin opens August 5...

Jaja... it might be the only Hooters in the world where people go for the lousy food.

Man Tequila comments on

Perhaps Peter should apply the Toyota principles. I wonder if he realizes that Toyota is a great manufacturing success story? I wonder if he realized this ten years ago?

Man Tequila comments on any jobs there in mexico ?

I have a website too! By stuffing envelopes at the privacy of your kitchen table, you could make, ohhhhhhh, let's say a thousand dollars a week. Details at www.stuffyourself.com.mx

Man Tequila comments on layover at juarez airport

Do you have to be at the airport at 2:30, or three hours before that? I am not a local, and do not remember the names of some fairly good places I ate breakfast. If you want a memorable meal, I would look in a travel guide or use Google. The airport has fifteen or so reasonably prices restaurants that serve Mexican, Italian, fast foody cuisine -- and would be good enough for me. There are some chain restaurants by the airport. Mexico City is spread out, a taxi ride to the main zocalo might take 30-45 minutes? The zocalo is okay, usual precautions apply. The best site in Mexico City is the anthropology museum, which to see properly takes at least a day. You might get something out of it in four hours, though.

Man Tequila comments on A question about Asthma?

Customs does not care if you bring back salbutamol inhalers from Colombia, I have done it myself.

Man Tequila comments on How much information is too much information

How much information is too much info? I'll answer that in a second. I have to go to the washroom. I am going to drop off a couple of kids at the pool.

Man Tequila comments on am i missing something, or is english no longer the national tongue in america?

The pizza paranoia is a little overdone, no?

Man Tequila comments on

English people can certainly be reasonable and blunt, but mutual exclusivity is more common. I was joking about the chip butties. I am extremely familiar with all types of english food -- and there a few things that are hard to find in Canada. (I love Walker's Worcestershire flavoured chips/sticks, English chocolate bars are expensive here). Most other fine English foods are available here (my mom makes a mean trifle, Lancashire hot pot, Yorkshire pudding), but it was galling when the Canadian branch of Marks and Sparks shut down.

Man Tequila comments on

Some English are reasonable and others are unbelievably blunt. I don't know what the real England is, but if it is a place where the best available sandwich is french fries on toast ("chip butties"), then you can keep it. My grandfather lived in a small town in rural England, fought the heathen Chinee in the Boxer rebellion, and went to his grave steadfastly refusing to even taste "foreign muck" like rice or spaghetti. A man of deep culture and conviction, no doubt.

Man Tequila comments on A question about Asthma?

I don't think you need a prescription to purchase most drugs, except for narcotics and benzodiazepines. I have bought generic Colombian Salbutamol. It works well, and I think an inhaler is around 10,000 pesos from Rebaja. I have not bought budenoside or beclomethasone but am sure both are available. Advair and other long acting beta-agonist medications are pricy in Colombia, as elsewhere. Montelukast is the generic name for Singulaire. Prednisone tablets are also very inexpensive in Colombia, but you would be unwise to take those without medical advice.

Man Tequila comments on am i missing something, or is english no longer the national tongue in america?

Canadians have long lived with the two official languages among many, many others. My $0.02: English is the mother tongue in the US. All the kids speak it, if grandmother doesn't, rest assured she will be dead soon. Companies could easily use English as the default, as they could in Canada. Why don't they? Because they want to show off. They want to say we are an inclusive company which embraces diversity and unites all of mankind under a rainbow banner of solidarity and happiness. This is why Canadian companies yammer on for two minutes in both languages before they give you a choice. WHOOEEEEE! Lookit us! We speak French! It is not worth losing sleep over, Douglas. Apart from a very few isolated pockets, no one needs to say what the dominant language is.

Man Tequila comments on If you are a professional and know English we can help you get to Canada..

Just because they can't spell "recruitng", "Columbian" or "Sssketchawan", "respcrtive" or "processiong" doesn't make it a scam, you know. ;)

Man Tequila comments on "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with their own money." . . . . . Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 -1859)

Some ring more true than others. I like Obama, but he has plenty of flaws. It seems comedians and political cartoonists have given him a pretty easy ride so far, so it is good to see these.

Man Tequila comments on Are Short Airline Transfer Times a Concern When Flying To Colombia?

I sometimes worry about these short connecting times, too. I have had tighter times than yours. Planes sometimes take off late, or land late. If you have a connecting time under 45 minutes, if one or both of these things happen, you risk missing the flight. I can recall a mad dash from gate 4 to 45 at LaGuardia after the "tickets will be cancelled" announcement, but not with fondness. You are also at increased risk of making the plane, but not having your baggage make the plane. This means the incovenience of not having your stuff, possibly the need to buy a few clothes or toiletries. This also increases the risk of problems with customs or theft. I have probably had 20 flights with similarly short connecting times. I have never missed the plane -- but did come very close once. I would say about a third of the time, my baggage did not make the plane, and was delayed for 1-2 days. I have not personally had a problem with customs or theft. Some airports (e.g. Atlanta) are extremely efficient and can get baggage onto flights in a very short time. Others... not so good.

Man Tequila comments on Medea Or Gaia?

One could be both -- believe that genocide is common and that Earth helps sustains life. But since you ask, I wonder if Pow Wow is Gaian? ;)

Man Tequila comments on

Maybe. But I thought missile was a generic term for a flying object, including arrows.

Man Tequila comments on New Lonely Planet Guidebook to Colombia-First Impression

Jensporup, obviously guidebooks need to edit the information they use, and try to include information of use to the traveller. But they vary a lot in size. What sort of fixed parameters were you given, when you say you had a fixed number of pages? What sort of stuff would you have liked to include given more room?

Man Tequila comments on The cycle of "abuse" continues

A lot of UC's concerns would depend on the age of the kid. I mean, most moms look after younger kids, Many moms always see their children as children. Sure it can be taken too far.

Man Tequila comments on

Seems like a lot to me. Laptops may be cheaper, but they are more valuable than anything else you might be carrying (maybe much more so if there is personal data on the laptop). If it is true, I bet it is more theft than loss.

Man Tequila comments on French tourists seen as world's worst: survey

I have seen a few mildly obnoxious French travellers in Quebec, but they did not seem as bad as the drunken Brits, Israelis, Argentines, Portugeuse, Italians...

Man Tequila comments on

The real problem, Pow Wow, is that there is enough food in Colombia for everyone. And wealthier Colombians can be indifferent to those without means. Senator Cynthia Davis is against feeding the poor as "hunger can be a powerful motivator". Some Colombians might agree with this selfish woman.

Man Tequila comments on

Americans spend 23 billion dollars a year on vitamins and supplements. That is not much money to a philantropist like PowWow, but I was surprised. As for chemo -- the side effects can be awful, and it often does not work. I sympathize with the people who decide not to do it. I have seen it work wonders, too. I don't believe in big corporations, especially companies "too big to fail". These should not be allowed to exist. The trustbusters had the right idea.

Man Tequila comments on

Like many people with a deep love of roller hockey, I was shocked Colombia lost to Angola. Then I saw the video. Are there any shots of them actually playing hockey? Their strong suit seems to be stretching and posing for group photos.

Man Tequila comments on Hardest to understand??? Costeños vs. Cubans

Cubans are harder to understand. You can understand costenos almost perfectly if you just assume the part you do not understand is just a local synonym for "bullshit". ;)

Man Tequila comments on lots of murders still happening in medellin. no room for bodies

Gloid is vey influential. He knows the guy who knows the guy.

Man Tequila comments on Worldwide cost of living index 2009

I was in Philly a few months ago, talking to a cab driver from Lagos, Nigeria. I was making small talk about the culture shock of moving, and what he missed. He said he didn't miss a single damn thing, the country was expensive and corrupt with no redeeming features. Still, surprised to see it made the list.
