What were the guys really doing?

These three Americans being held by the FARC were working for some company like General Dynamics? What were these guys doing in Colombia that they were on a small plane that goes down over FARC territory? I unnderstand they spoke little Spanish. Something to do with drug eradication but what? Jobs for AMERICANS in Colombia?

For you gringo citizens in Colombia with a valid work visa, there are jobs at the US Embassy. Actually, the STATE DEPARTMENT is ALLOWED to DISCRIMINATE against US citizens by requireing that only a US citizen residing in Colombia and that already have in hand a valid Colombian work permit to work at the embassy.
