manINred comments on 2010 soccer World Cup - France qualifying over Ireland It's sad to see people brushing incidents like these off when there are ways to prevent them. Mitch, If this happened to Colombia, do you think that the ref would be allowed to leave the estadio in Medellin alive? Hell no! People would be throwing empanadas, chairs, and whatever other missiles they could find at the guy. At least now people will care about the French at the WC. Their horribly dull performances meant that they needed to add some controversy for people to give a shizen about them.

manINred comments on 2010 soccer World Cup - France qualifying over Ireland Point: no one should be praising Henry for saying after the fact "I handled it, I admit it". He knows everyone saw him handle it, so he cannot possibly claim otherwise. And his 'admission' doesn't make his cheating any less acceptable. Other points that should be raised is blatant corruption and favouritsim rampant in FIFA. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the officials (the only ones in the stadium not to see the hand ball) were asked to turn a blind eye in the interest of the sport so that France's presence at the world cup not rest on a toin coss (penalties). Given the corruption and continental-favouritsm in FIFA and UEFA, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Last and most vital point: the goal and more crucially the outcome as a result of the illegal goal is proof that football must adapt and implement video technology and a 4th official.

manINred comments on 2010 soccer World Cup - France qualifying over Ireland yummyj, that is a crock argument... Henry is a professional footballer. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing by handling the ball, preventing it from going out of touch in order to square it for Gallas who scored. You don't become one of the best athletes in the world by having no coordination over the actions of your arms. And the first thing he did after the goal? He went to the corner flag and celebrated... so much for "oh no, woe is me, I cheated"; which is not what he told the ref. The French can still redeem themselves by playing sporting and exciting football. The mistake should lie mostly on the shoulders of FIFA and the referee, IMO. Septic Bladder and Platini need to be removed from any position of power.

manINred comments on Why Plan Colombia has to go on Answer to first question. No. But it's an irrelevant question Answer to second question. Yes, definitely, that would soon bankrupt the FARC and cartels. But they can't do it.

manINred comments on Why Plan Colombia has to go on OK, I will agree with you there to an extent Makop, because I do think that certain issues and responsibilities of a global nature should be shared by all nations. I'll give you an example. Yasuni in Ecuador is a goldmine of rainforest. It is also a goldmine of oil. In terms of biodiversity, it is invaluable. By expecting Ecuador not to drill for oil there and benefitting the world's biodiversity, we are expecting Ecuador to forgo billions of dollars of oil revenue. If there is international pressure for Yasuni to remain unscathed, THAT COST SHOULD BE SHARED by Canada included. You will see that Canada gives money to initiatives like these, and I think, if a similar situation was to occur in Colombia Canada should help there too. And they do, as I already stated, in accepting Colombian refugees into Canada. But I do not think they should give money to the "War on Drugs". Drug abuse is not high on Canada's domestic priority list and so Canadian international aid should go to projects such as Yasuni or other ones, but not the US-inspired War on Drugs. And I would still be angered as a US citizen to be seeing money pissed away on that war.
manINred comments on Why Plan Colombia has to go on "0 I hope" Agree completely. "where is the answer of my question? What do Canada to help Colombia?" In accepting Colombian refugees and migrants who want to move there. And why the hell should Canada send 1 cent to help Colombia in the US WAR ON DRUGS? How does it help the Canadian population? It doesn't. If I were american, I'd be pissed that in times of record deficit the government was pissing away money to fund some misguided war in a country that has close to no relevance for me.

manINred comments on Tipping in Colombia Having grown up and lived in a tipping culture (North America) and a non-tipping culture (UK and Australia) I am in full agreement with Johnny 2009. It is not necessary to tip where it is not customary to, it is just bizarre. That being said, if you don't tip in North America you are a wanker.

manINred comments on Gambia 2 Colombia 0 45 Minutes Sub 17 Yeah Romy exactly, the 3 points go flying in the wrong direction and despite a tight game, nothing to show for it. The ChelseaMU feed dropped and I noticed the Turkey-Colombia match link which worked (caught extra time/penals), and that makes up for it a bit. Afterwards I never did regain the feed to see Chelsea score, which is good since it would only have annoyed me. I've always said, you cannot just take a dollar value and hope it replaces a 40-goal season player. With Giggs and Scholesy retiring soon, a lot of dynamic in the midfield will be gone. Transition time. Out of curiosity, throughout the course of the 90 minutes, was a draw deserved? How did Colombia fare? Losing on penalties is always harsh, but the right team went through in this case.

manINred comments on Buses Medellin -Peru Yeah my quito to lima bit is an estimate, never having done it myself. I've done Medellin-Quito, but refer to Johnny's link for the rest.
manINred comments on Buses Medellin -Peru Hey, The cheapest way to do it is just to take the domestic buses. The trans-national buses will cost more, and I'm not even sure any leave from Medellin. It's not unsafe. The bit between Popayan and Pasto you will want to do by day. It will break down like this: Medellin-Cali: 8 hours, $20 Cali-Ipiales (border town): 8-9 hours: $15-20 Microbus to border point: 30 minutes: $1 Wait at border: 1 hour or less if lucky Microbus to Tulcan 30 minutes: $1 Tulcan-Quito: 5 hours, $5 Quito to Peruvian border: 12 hours, 12$ Peruvian border to Lima: 20 hours, 20-30$ It's a lot of travel and change, you might want to break it up a bit, but as you can see, about 40-45 hours realistically. And pretty damn cheap, for the distance travelled.

manINred comments on Gambia 2 Colombia 0 45 Minutes Sub 17 awesome! i completely missed this game, but I'll look out for the match against Turkey. For those who want to see how this tournament has progressed, here it has a nice diagram. Colombia will face Turkey and one of either Switzerland or Italy to reach the finals. http://www.fifa.com/u17worldcup/matches/index.html Hey Romy, I have seen the CL. Liverpool have been leaving it till the last minute to lose points against Lyon, and now look like they won't qualify. Munich look like they'll be another fallen bigshot. Rubin Kazan have defeated Barcelona at home, winning their aggregate matches against the current champions, which is by far the biggest upset yet.

manINred comments on Colombian police kill Farc terrorist leader Islamist terrorist groups have a completely different set of ideologies from Colombian guerrilla groups. The Islamist groups also enjoy more widespread support than the FARC or ELN. Look at Hizbullah, they are now Lebanon's second leading party! The good thing is, at least in legitimizing, they are forced to be less extremist. Would the same thing happen with the FARC? Doubtful.

manINred comments on entire Colombian football team killed by ELN you miss so much being unable to speak the language of a culture. you'd know that if you spoke spanish. but you are right, there are certain aspects that you can appreciate without using words (such as music, well not the lyrics). "I can't remember exactly, but was it not retaliation for some kind of affront from this team to Payaso? Anybody else hear about this theory in more detail?" Is there a link? I haven't heard this version, although it is plausible.

manINred comments on The Days Before the Gringo Invassion it cannot be that bad (unless you're racist). I barely saw a gringo in Colombia, and I went throughout the entire country. I'm going back for a few weeks and I can guarantee that I will barely see one. And even if there are a few, who cares? They'll stick to places like Lleras and Candeleria (sp) and Sexta and Taganga. It's no big deal, it's some added currency for the Colombian economy.
manINred comments on entire Colombian football team killed by ELN Greg, in absolutely no way will the ability to speak spanish in Colombia shelter you any more than not being able to speak the language. Personally, I don't know how people appreciate the culture or country not being able to speak any Spanish, and not attempting to learn. Tasco - the ELN is not 'Chavez's group'. To think for a second that Chavez condoned the killing of a few working-class futbolistas is absurd.
manINred comments on entire Colombian football team killed by ELN Well, I guess Romy and Dolfi are technically correct. There has been no conclusive evidence that the ELN perpetrated this massacre. What I do believe is that it was highly possible that they did. Perhaps, as it was suggested, it was a botched recruitment attempt. Apparently one of the survivors claims that the group was indeed the ELN, but that is not proof (yet).

manINred comments on Learning PORTUGUESE from SPANISH background-- pitfalls? suggestions? Simon, just admit it: Portuguese is better than Spanish and Brazil can kick Colombia's ass!
manINred comments on that may be true, but i was pointing out that it's unlikely that your ratio holds true in reality.
manINred comments on entire Colombian football team killed by ELN I'm not particularly biased, since I see most of these groups in the same light. ELN is the best guess at the moment, and it is not so far-fetched to assume that the ELN did this, based on media reports. Whoever did this is most likely to be involved in the drug trade, since both guerrilla and paramilitary groups are involved in drug trading.

manINred comments on entire Colombian football team killed by ELN Colombian guerrillla groups were killing Colombians long before Chavez was a bigshot.

manINred comments on Overweight, socially inept, badly dressed gringos Kalder, the negative aspects of what you described was my first experience with a gringo in Colombia. He was fat, bald, obnoxious, and frankly I can think of no redeeming qualities that he held. I was sitting at a place in Cali, when he overheard something I said in English. He came up to me and said "you american?" and after replying "no" he proceeded to tell me about how the women in Colombia were easy and all over him, how the drugs were cheap and awesome, etc.... He was a beligerant sex-tourist who painted Colombia as some sort of puteria drughouse. He said this as he dribbled spit down his chin. I was repulsed, ignored him, and ever since then I have had a stereotype of the fat gringo sex-tourist, a reason I try and avoid non-Colombian contact in Colombia. And other than that instance in Cali and a couple of hostels I stayed at, I've not come across a foreigner, fat and inept or otherwise. Mind you, you're probably correct; but different experiences form different viewpoints.

manINred comments on Non Lleras places in Medellin? What's wrong with Lleras? I thought that's where all the sex tourists hung out!

manINred comments on Colombia - Praise HUGO LOL Simon, it's hardly 'finally'. He made quite an impact at Wigan last year if you remember, even though he only had 3 months left in the season. He is the top goalscorer in U-20 WC qualifying of all time, and what Romy said. Bill - Rodallega is Colombian, born near Cali (i think) and he is currently striker (goalscoring position up front) for Wigan Athletic, a team doing relatively well in England this year, a major reason for which is the Colombian player. A nation with footballing prowess such as Colombia, after having missed the 2010 WC just recently, will be doing a lot of soul-searching, so hearing updates on their young prospects like Rodallega and many of the players Romy listed (who I do not know enough about to post on this board, yet) will give hinchas of the national team some hope, and direction, in Colombia's Copa America campaigns and the next qualifying round of the WC.
manINred comments on Colombia - Praise HUGO Hmm, the quote at the bottom below the link came out a bit odd, but it's all one quote, given by the Spaniard Martinez who is currently the manager at Wigan.

manINred comments on help with airfares :( Air Canada is not an option, the flights are extremely expensive for that time. you'll be wasting in the area of 2500-3000 pounds. The longer you wait, the higher prices will be. Tell your daughter to come home a few days later... as panthdave explains, the date she wants to come back is high in demand. The first few days of school don't matter anyway, so she shouldn't worry about missing a couple of days.

manINred comments on Off Topic? Yes, it's hilarious how a thread about one of Colombia's most young and exciting football prospects succeeding in the world's best league gets deleted, and threads like this (see below) that have absolutely NOTHING to do with Colombia can stay. http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/no-wonder-british-men-are-looking-for-colombianitas/
manINred comments on No wonder British men are looking for Colombianitas I'll bet there are more Colombians looking for upstanding British gentlemen. Tasco, you are a hypocrite. If anyone says anything bad about Colombia, you throw a hissy-fit. But you can slander other nations all you want, and let's face it, this doesn't even have anything to do with Colombia.
