mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on Cocuy

I did the circuit and eventually climbed ritacuba blanco and had a wicked time. we did it without guide but I had a GPS with me and got some rough coordinates off google earth. i tracked a lot of the way so if anyone wants i can send through the exact coordinates for a Garmin. we didnt meet anyone and had great weather. it gets cold at night and during the day temperature and climate will change within minutes from cold to hot and back to cold. I can send through more info for anyone who is interested.

Climbed it with harnesses, rope, crampons but without axes. though it sure is possible this way, I would recommend ice axes for anyone else trying it. the last 50ft are precarious

I'm the one webmanco is talking about. i just got back from doing the circuit and summiting the ritacuba blanco. i have hiked all over the world and this has been my best experience, also one of the hardest. 3 days though... first it took us over 12 hrs to get there coz the direct buses to guican were all full but that shouldnt be a problem now. 8 hrs should get you there. in three days you better visit the el pulpito del diablo, pan de azucar and around to laguna de la plaza. if you want to put it long days you can pass over the boqueron north of pan de azucar and finish at finca la esperanza where the milk truck passes in the am. drop me a line if you need detailed information. i am in bogota right now if you want to come by. 3124533123 - Rgds - Bjorn aka el mono

I really wish Peter would cut down on posts like this... Perhaps, ideally, we can cut down on people like you coming to Colombia

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on webmanco

Hi webmanco! Thanks for the info on Cocuy. Thinking of doing it with my girlfriend. she's very outdoors but has never trekked like that before so we'll do Los Nevados first (call it a test) and Cocuy later in January. We are planning on doing it in 7-8 days and carry everything ourselves. Some reports on the hike mention pretty hard core climbing? We possibly might do some mountaineering next year in the same area but if I understand it right there is no need for crampons or safetyrope on the 7 day trek?

Hi Bjorn! Thanks for the info on Cocuy. Thinking of doing it with my girlfriend. she's very outdoors but has never trekked like that before so we'll do Los Nevados first (call it a test) and Cocuy later in January. I could not find the 1995 LP so if, at all, you could scan and send me that map you talked about that would be greatly appreciated. We are planning on doing it in 7-8 days and carry everything ourselves. Some reports on the hike mention pretty hard core climbing? We possibly might do some mountaineering next year in the same area but if I understand it right there is no need for crampons or safetyrope on the 7 day trek? Thanks a lot man! where do you live these days?

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on Bill Turley

Namaste Bill, thanks for your input on where to find real estate. Right now I am looking for something downtown while my girlfriend finishes her studies in Zootecnia. Eventually we want to open a self sustaining ecological finca with luxury farm stay option and simultaneously supporting the local comunity, wherever our finca will be. We'll have just about any animal you can imagine (all in due time) and if all works out well we'll develop it towards a yoga retreat for whoever needs to get away from the ratrace. You never know, one day we might just be able to sit back and relax in peace and quiet and take a breath of fresh air Om shanti shanti shanti Bjorn

i dunno... i was actually looking for a good dentist after being screwed (can i use that word here moderator?) by an alleged 'great' dentist. ever heard of a dentist diagnosing and installing 3 crowns without ever taking an x-ray? right... unfortunately i didnt know any better...

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on Looking for Real Estate in North Bogota

it was my novia who actually went down to see it but the seller was foreign so that might explain. perhaps he got ripped off and is trying to recover some of his losses :) anyways, i'll be down there in a few weeks again but only for a few days. If all goes well I should be living in Bogota 6 months out of the year and I am just trying to find something to keep me busy. I was thinking of doing up a house and rent out furnished apartments to gringos like ourselves. I remember from when i looked to rent an apartment my first time there it was impossible to find something furnished and for just a few months. i think that gap in the market might slowly be filling but not full yet by any means.

I'll let you know when i'm in town next. i see you have a small leather business? are you working with Christopher Kirk?

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on International $$ transfer

I guess ATM will be the way to go like you say. I found out Davivienda lets me withdraw 500'000 at the time. Are there banks/locations that let me get more? do some banks have lower charges than others?

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on Hiking near Bogota

PN Cucuy has a superb 7 day hike i am planning on doing some time in the near future

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on International $$ transfer

Thanks for all your advice guys. I am actually going to Colombia in about 4 weeks and perhaps it is better to bring my $$ with me in cash. How much can I bring in and how much do I have to declare? Anyone?

mail@bjorndeboeck.com comments on Wireless in Bogota

No such luck I'm afraid. you can get broadband (600kbs) with ETB for 120'000 (with phone) or by cable (500kbs) with tv for 100'000. I am pretty happy with ETB these days. If you're living in the Macarena, I'm sending out a pretty strong wireless signal from my apartment so let me know and I can hook you up.
