kiwi Comcel is the most used mobile provider in Colombia, and they are on Freq. 850 - your phone is most likely on the 1900 freq for Europe - which will not work in Colombia unless you use Ola - that operates on the same 1900 frequency - however, their service is not reliable.

When travelling abroad, you have to make sure that you have a QUAD BAND GSM phone.

A great phone for a terrific price w/ Bluetooth technology is the Motorola V505 - it retails for about $130USD - this phone is not available in Colombia yet, but YOU CAN use a Comcel sim card and pop it in to teh Motorola V505 since it is compatile with 850 freq.

I had a friend get me a Comcel sim card, and put it on my v505 phone - works great everywhere I traveled including Pereira and La Union.

I can tell you........ the reaction from her family was NOT GOOD!

She talked about me soo much, and how happy she was to have met me. When she finally mentioned that I was 18 years her junior...they hit the ceiling with anger!

Here are some facts:

She has a daughter who is only 4 years younger than I.
She never married her daughter's father...
She has never dated anyone my age before.

her daugther was ver happy for her mom however. She (her daughter)was even proud of the fact that her mom is dating someone very energetic and young.

Her parents, brothers and sisters were furious, and she ended up in a family argument about me already. Her friends just plain give her negative advice on how "It will never work".

I know that many men here in their 50's date young girls in tehir 20's - but why is that more accepted than a woman dating a young guy?

I forgot to mention............... The time that I saw girls eating like there was no tomorrow was at 3AM!!! So, it was not a lunch thing; rather a after partying n drinkin all night thing. I think you already know the answer to that latingirl. Tulua is nowhere even close to being fairly safe like Medellin, Bogota or even Cali. If you have family in Tulua, have them escort you all the way from your arrival to final destination. However, if you look Colombian, speak fluent spanish and can camouflage yourself to NOT look like a foreigner - that would be best if you MUST go.

Otherwise, stay away from Tulua. There is NOTHING to see or Do there that is remotely appealing to the foreign tourist. Consider Tulua the ghetto section of el Valle.

If you look.... like a 6'1" 23, blond, blue eyes guy - you need to worry more about the Colombianas ladies trying to kidnap you, and making you feel like the king of the world more than you would need to worry about FARC ;-)

BTW, I would let the detective/investigator travel to rural areas for you...don't you even think about going to remote areas even with a .45 gun and a TEK-9 together - forget it! You will be outmaned and outgunned, if you run into guerrillas. If not guerrillas, drug leaders and cartels that are huge trouble as well!

It's better that you did stay within the boundaries of Cali, and have people come to you there. Let your detective/trasnlator do all the dirty/dangerous work for you - that is why you pay him a nice set of greenbacks for.

colombiano x I hear you as well..luckily, in Miami - I find tons of "recien llegada" girls from all over South America..and THEY ARE THE BEST!!!! Just 3 days ago, I met a Colombiana from Cali who was just breathtakenly GORGEOUS! She did not speak a word of English, and I immediately knew she was a sweetheart because of her recien llegada status in Miami.

I don't know, but as soon as she becomes "north americanized" I think the magic in her eyes, and warmth in her smile will cease to exist. At which point, I hope to have discovered another "recien llegada!"

I am in the law enforcement field in the USA, and I can tell you that I had a very difficult time trying to get a permit w/o a Colombian cedula. Basically, I ended up not getting a permit after all the paperwork it would require even for me - even with clear indication of what I do for a living back in the states in Law Enforcement.

I'm not saying it cannot be done, however, I'm sure some serious political Colombian connections will have to come into play to get a carry-license for a non-political foreigner, and you will have very STRICT limits as to where you can carry!

If I REALLY wanted a carry permit in Colombia, I'm certain that a visit to the US Embassy would push me to the top of the eligible list as a US foreigner with a badge. However, I am in law enforecement in the US, so that will play a big part if you are a private citizen with no high-risk business or political office.

DAS is the very first stop you will have to make, so give them a call.

Gringa-Colombiana - I truly did not mean any insult on my posting about the visa question - seriously. As I mentioned, my spanish is not the greatest, so I did not know wether Mark was implying for this poor child to start off on the wrong foot by recommending a fraudulous marriage. Like you, marriage is sacred, not a game or chance to take advantage of someone.

I knwo thsi Cuban-American guy who started an aggrement with a girl from Venezuela strictly for papers. Now, thsi is one of the coolest and nicest guys you will ever meet - just not too smart.

Anywho, after about 6 months - they did the forbbiden dance, and I'm not talking about the Lambada here folks (Remember that one everyone). Now, he is in love, and she is just using him. It pisses me off big time to see stuff like this happen all the time.

I get 10,000 looks and compliments form latinas whether they be Puerto Ricans, Brazilian, Mexican, Cubans..whomever, before I get 1 look from a gringa. It seems that in South Florida (Fort Lauderdale/Miami), gringas my age or a few years younger are interested in African American men with gold teeth and basketball Jerseys, driving Impalas w/ 26" chrome rims that spin; not black hair, tan skin guys with Spaniard/Italian roots.
