Lostgringo comments on renting in bogota Hans there are many things to take into consideration here. How long to you plan to rent for? Do want it furnished? Do you have someone to co-sign for you? Don't think that Bogota is some backwoods country where you can rent places for a song. Rents can be very high depending on what you want and where you want to live. You need to give us more information if you really want a decent answer to your question. Like Dualta says, it's like asking how long a piece of string is.

Lostgringo comments on Casinos in Bogota Your best bet is to go to the casino in Zona Rosa. It has everything you need and also has Hold-em Poker tables.

Lostgringo comments on Colombian news headlines | UN "shocked" about increase coca, opposition wants one presidential candidate, possible death Márquez investigated, "FARC will have 3000 men in 2009" It's a never ending saga. Even if they get rid of the FARC some other group will rear it's head and take over the business of selling the juice. It's just all smoke and mirrors. IMHO

Lostgringo comments on Parque Bolívar, Medellín there is also a new hostel that just started up with a swimming pool (I think). Why not give them a try? You can do a search on here for hostels. You can meet allot of people there and learn about the city. Just a suggestion.

Lostgringo comments on Web Design I am having a number of websites "developed" here in the Philippines. They are being built with PHP scripting designed for Web 2.0 specifically and with a MYSQL data base. Also, CSS. I can refer you to the person who does this for me. This is high end scripting that is needed if you are looking for any kind of presence on the Web. Anyone can build or design a website but if you want quality especially if you want to expand or sell a product on the internet you need someone to develop a website from the ground up. In my humble opinion. And, Flash, Java and Javax will slow down the loading of your website, so you need it done by someone who knows what they are doing. So why get it done in the Philippines? English language is prevalent here and there are lots of programmers who offer their services for a good price. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Franko

Lostgringo comments on How to find houses in Bogota ? I would never completely right off real estate people. They can give you a good idea of the asking rent and good areas to live in. You can also negotiate with them. I rented through a real estate agent and only paid $300 a month for a new 3 bedroom apartment. I mean how cheap do you want to go? Again, don't write these people off completely.

|
Lostgringo comments on HELP WITH PLACE TO STAY IN BOGOTA! PLEASE! I am not sure I agree with the above posters unless you don't mind sleeping in some really bad conditions. You may be able find accommodation in a hostel like the Platypus...maybe. durito is correct in terms of the food. Also, in many places you can refills of juice and I have found places under $3. There's lots of info on this site with regards to accommodation. I am sure that if you google it on this site you will find what you need. Have a great time in Bogota.

Lostgringo comments on Is "dengue" "west nile virus"? I had Dengue Fever in the Philippines just 4 months ago. If you let it go too long you start bleeding from the inside. I truly thought I was on my way out. Very painful. You have to replace you placlids (sp) and try to increase your fluid intake. There is supposed to be a common cure for it from a herb in the Philippines. You make a tea out of it. I made a comment to my doctor in the hospital that now that I have had Dengue I won't get it again. I was told that there are at least 5 different strains of Dengue. Thanks I needed that.

Lostgringo comments on APARTAMENTO & HABITATIONS DE BOGOTA COLOMBIA LOW AS $17.99 DE NOCHE Hi Guys...please check out the website. The $17.99 is for one room if you take it for one month. I am sorry if you were misled. Gigyflower you want airport transfer to for that price? Or were you just making a joke? These are luxury but very economical rooms in an upscale neighborhood in Bogota. They have not raised their prices for almost 3 years even with the downturn in the American dollar. Taxis are relatively cheap in Bogota and you can get one right at the airport. Just go to the taxi stand and give them your address. You pay right there and get a slip from them. No haggling with the taxi. Have a nice time in Bogota.

Lostgringo comments on Message from GIB drople77 I never really meant to say you were a weekend warrior. That statement was not meant for you at all. After all I hardly know you. It was simply used to explain how some tourists can get themselves in trouble without knowing the lay of the land so-to-speak. Please don't threaten me in terms of GIB. In my humble opinion he is better off not having to deal with some of simpleton people that post here. That is not directed at you, it is a statement I am making about some of the people who hid behind their computers and attacked him. But I regress. All I was attempting to say was that GIB is not the kind of guy that hangs around expensive restaurants...that's all. Poor example maybe. I learned a long time ago that some Gringos will never blend in 100%. GIB is one of them. But it's just his stature that stands out not his interaction with others and not the way he dresses. It's hard to explain and I don't need to get into all of this.

Lostgringo comments on lpdiver I love what you are doing. I used to be a big Ebayer and used to get some really good stuff at garage sales. I used to get allot of stuff and take it to Cuba also. Some things I would get were brand new tee shirts and hats advertising something especially beer. They loved this stuff. http://www.welovebogota.com http://www.apartmentinbogota.com
|
|
Lostgringo comments on Message from GIB droble77 your explanation is correct most of the time but not all of the time. Random things happen. Call it Murphy's law if you likeThe reason it may happen to GIB is that he lives on the streets when he is in Bogota. By that I mean he eats and goes to places where the Colombians go. You won't see him in Crepes and Waffles. He is very visible. Not to mention that he is a big man and stands out. What I am trying to say is that GIB acts like he is Colombian not a GRINGO. Unfortunately, that may put him in a different category than the weekend warriors that go to Colombia for a week and think they know it all. Also, contrary to what you may think I don't believe he is in a habit of visiting funky places in Bogota. He is not stupid and he does know his surroundings. I know this because GIB was my tour guide in Bogota for over a week. Best damn tour guide you could ever have. Also, he is not in the habit of making enemies. He makes a special effort to be friendly with everyone. Get well GIB.

Lostgringo comments on More Observations from the side of the Emerald Mountain Bill good for you. It sounds like you have found your little slice of paradise. Like yourself, many of us who have visited or live in Colombia do so because it allows us to live in a lifestyle we couldn't afford in our home countries. Colombia for me is intoxicating to say the least. If you visit her with an open mind and a positive attitude you will have much difficulty not falling in love with her. IMHO.

Lostgringo comments on DirectTV or Dish on Computer ? Morgan I think pilotguy is talking about getting tv direct on your computer. I tried your www.hulu.com and is says it is only good for the US. I remember downloading a tv software program and it was pretty bad. You have to have a special connection on your tv in order to connect your computer to it. I cannot remember the name of it right now. I had an hd lcd hooked up to my computer like morgan. I could switch it back and forth real easy and watch tv or work on my computer. I will be doing this again when I return to Colombia. http://www.welovebogota.com http://www.apartmentinbogota.com

Lostgringo comments on Message from GIB I always wipe down the bottle of beer I get with a napkin. Always. I never thought about the ATM machine. GIB I am very sorry to hear about your troubles. I will be in Bogota in about a month. I hope we can meet up. Take care of yourself. I still think you need to check out Medellin. I remember walking in Bogota and I thought some bird crapped on me. When I wiped it off I recognized it was Avacodo. A bunch of girls were walking passed me as this happened. I think they were thinking about pickpocketing me. Now I wonder. It would have been just as easy for them to throw some of this laden with this drug. All you would have to do is try and clean it off and bang! Get well big guy

Lostgringo comments on My g/f has a good job in Colombia. One of her co-workers has cancer. He will likely die from this in the next few months. He has worked with the government for over 25 years. He will not be able to leave his family any pension. That will be voided. In many ways there are no safety measures for people in Colombia. Also, please don't believe that the medical system there is the same for the poor as it is for the well-to-do. But here is the rub..IMHO. If you have not seen poverty on a wholesale scale previously to visiting Colombia, the poor you see there could leave you with a bad impression. In my experience the poverty I observed in Manila, Philippines is the worst I have ever come across. Many of the poor sell some of their body parts in order to live. The streets in downtown Manila are littered with the poor at night sleeping and sharing the street with the largest roaches I have ever seen. The stench from the sewers is enough to make the biggest guy humble. These people are not alcoholics or addicts. They are simply poor without any means, support or place to live. A nice white church across on the street rings it's bell. Followers line up and enter the church and give donations. This church does not offer food to the poor on the streets outside it's walls. The government is too busy filling their pockets. The poor have no face. However, I am sure I have not seen the worst of the worst. More traveled people here could certainly enlighten us. Bickeress for example has traveled all over the world and does not like to live in fanciest hotels. I am sure he has seen some serious poverty in his travels. It is unfortunate and nothing I enjoy seeing. But it exists all over the world.

Lostgringo comments on what monthly rent can I expect to pay in Bogota? Following along with miamimike's train of thought you may want to ask around at some schools in the area you are interested in. You may however be limited in your freedom at some of these places. http://www.welovebogota.com http://www.apartmentinbogota.com

Lostgringo comments on Rules of dating medellin Frank how much time have you spent there? I am thinking about trying it out for 6 months. Lostgringo comments on what monthly rent can I expect to pay in Bogota? Great suggestions on apartment hunting in Bogota. I like the idea of staying in a place where you can work from to find a place. Take my g/f's apartment for example. You have free access to the phone there and internet (wifi). She will even give you a cellular if one is available (with deposit), for you to use. She will rent you a room in that apartment for as low as $17.99 a night if you take it for a month. You are free to come and go as you like and there may be times that you have the entire 3 bedroom apartment for yourself. There is 24/7 security and good secure locks on every door in the apartment. All rooms have their own tv and you have full access to the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with a coffee maker, blender for your fresh fruits, iron and ironing board and micro wave oven. In addition, there is a party and/or conference room you can reserve if you want to entertain allot of guests. It's free and has a BBQ located just outside the room on the roof. This would be a great place for you to work from in terms of finding an apartment of your own. Her apartment is not a guest house or bed and breakfast. You are on your own there with nobody looking over your shoulder. It's only a few years old in a new building located in an upscale and safe area of Bogota. You can check out the apartment she rents and more details at: http://www.welovebogota and http://www.apartmentinbogota.com I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy yourself in Bogota Colombia

Lostgringo comments on Cheaper Taxis - Medellin to Airport (Rio Negro) It's for taxis to make a profit taking people to the airport. Especially when you consider the price of gas and the toll costs going and coming from there. I have my taxi driver pick up people at the airport and I pay him $60,000. He will wait for for people and is 100% trustworthy. That's all the way from Rio Negro to Sabaneta. He charges $50,000 and I give him $10,000 tip. The trust and safety factor is worth the extra. In terms of bickerss comment about the white taxis...there much larger than the mini taxis used all over Medellin. A great bargain to say the least. http://www.welovebogota.com http://www.apartmentinbogota.com
