MMmmm fees fees fees I agree with Mario...seems that fees are charged everywhere.

I'm gonna try putting Receiver pays, since they seem to pay anyways, see what they get charged... will let everyone know.
And also see how long it takes...

I see medellin has one at san diego, and one at Sucre... I guess San Diego is more accessable?

Citibank you say... I tried moneygram before as it was supposed to be the "cheapest" from Australia... and it was, until it got to Colombia and they tacked on some other charges which they aren't supposed according to my bank here.. oh well...(ended up being about 10% of the amount transferred...)

Ok, so I'll give citibank a whirl this time...

So how long do you think this should take? less than 5working days?

Anyone know if Medellin has Citibank offices? I can't recall seeing any last time I was there...

Actually on another tangent, seems that uni students there don't seem to have as much contact hours/days as say here in Australia.
Do they all get like 3 months holidays in the middle of the year, then another 3 near Christmas? Seems like that with some friends I know in Medellin.

Maybe teaching English at a Colombian U wouldn't be too bad.

Jobs. I'm sure well paid jobs exist, but with such great supply of educated people, and high corruption.. you would have to be VERY lucky, and probably connected to get a good one. AND thats only for colombians! if you are an extranjero and want one of those coveted jobs... well... you guess...

Need to be born rich to succeed in colombia?
No. But you better have rich friends.. the lack of access to capital is a major barrier for most colombians... I'm sure if you had say US$20k+, you'd be able to setup shop doing something, or atleast be the backer for some bright colombians...

Only one way to find out... give it a go! Thats what the colombians do.

I guess it is like Roncita said... without a job, to adapt to society.. could be quite hard to keep yourself entertained...

i was thinking maybe salsa lessons?
maybe finding somewhere that teaches "colombian" cooking...

Don't know what else... any hints would be good... i guess i could try and learn more spanish... and maybe teach english.. but that is also little time consumption... and probably worse for my spanish...

How open are people to sharing "family" time... eg hanging out at girlfriends/friends/parents houses.. just to absorb culture?

Indeed Thanks for all the responses... Yes that's sort of what I gathered... So why is it that everyone seems to rave about Medellin?

DOes it mean everyone does work day jobs, so they are able to hang out with friends and stuff during the night and weekends?

Also... where do people hang out? I mean, there aren't a lot of parks or public spaces in medellin are there?
And during the day, the bars don't really open. Or is it fincas where people enjoy hanging out?

I'm from Western Australia, and spent 5 months of the last year in Colombia! It was fantastic!

It was safe I guess, just like they say on this webpage.. if you are unlucky you could get kidnapped (just like in many countries), or mugged (like in many cities).

But people are all very friendly, and I'm sure he can speak some spanish by now so he should be fine!
