Lexxy comments on The Perfect Colombian Vacation

There are a lot of great places to visit here in Medellin. I posted one comment on the old tourism travel guide page but I can't seem to find it now. Are you looking for historical sights, cultural spots, night life (if so then what type of music), good food, people watching? It all depends on what you are looking for. I could fill up a whole page of places I love and great things to do but it depends on what you are looking for. That way I can give you really specific ideas. Medellin is so amazing and if you get a chance to go to Santa Fe de Antioquia it is amazing as well. I look forward to hearing back from you so that I can help in the best way possible.

Lexxy comments on So who here on this site actually lives in Colombia?

I actually moved to medellin about 2 months ago. I have lived here before as an exchange student and have come many times to visit my family since my mom is Colombian and my dad is an American. Pretty much her whole family still lives down here so it's really great when I get to coe down and see everyone. But now that I am living here instead of just visiting it's kinda different. Anyway, just though I would add my 2 cents.

Lexxy comments on feeding the bugs HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have found the most amazing thing ever when it comes to bugs. I too get eaten alive while I am here in Medellin (and expecially when I goout to the fincas in the countryside.) Go to pretty much any pharmacy (Farmacia/Drogeria) and ask for Tiamina. Take one every single day and within two days or so the bugs will pretty much leave you alone. It's pretty cheap and seriously worth it. it's a vitamin that gives your body a scent that is undetectable to the human nose but the bugs can't stand it. I hope this helps

A few tips One of the best kept secrets of Colombia, if you ask me, is Capurgana. It is absolutly breathtaking. Santa Marta, Barranquilla and Cartagena are nice but have nothing on Capurgana. While in Medellin I can recommend some amazing places to visit, but it depend on what you are looking for. Are you looking for more of a cultural visit with museums and local flavor or are you looking to just have a fun visit and not really worried about that? I agree that Santa Fe de Antioquia is a must and now thet the tunnel has opened it is really close to Medellin.
If you are going to go to the Salt Cathedral I definately reccomend taking the train from Bogota. It's definately an amazing experience. The train stops in Zipaquira and a bus will take you to the salt cathedral. When you are done seeing the cathedral the bus takes you to Cajica where you can have lunch and relax before the train takes you back to Bogota. The train is about 2800 pesos and the bus 1600 I think (around $22 total) so it might be a little expensive but I would say that it is the one and only way to go if you really want an experience for your friend.
El Eje Cafetero is also a great experience. There are agencies that will sell you a 4 day tour for about $200 each (from Medellin). That includes the bus, hotel stay for 3 nights, breakfast and dinner every day, and all the enterence fees to the parks (Panaca, Parque del Cafe, Salento, and the hot springs in Santa Rosa de Cabales). Considering how much you get, it really is a great price.
That's all I can think of for now but let me know if you need any more information about anything.

Lexxy comments on Voluntary Translation Help Required

Sure Hi, I am half American and half Colombian. I live in Medellin now and although my Spanish is not perfect, I can have my family check anything that I translate for you from English before I send it back. I can also trasnlate from Spanish to English. I have a few hours free usually and would love to be able to help. Just let me know.

Lexxy comments on Ajiaco anyone?

Actually really good Ajiaco is a potato based soup with chicken in it. It is actually REALLY good. The white stuff on top is a heavy cream that gives it a richness but you can get it with or without the cream usually (If you want it without just say "Sin crema"). The plate next to it has rice, salad, avocado and a patacon (fried plantain). A lot of people will put the rice and avocado into the soup. The plantain is really good with either a little bit of salt or, if you can get it, hogao (a cooked mixture of onions, green onions, tomatoes, salt and cumin) I would definately try it if you get the chance.

Lexxy comments on Brief travel guide to Santa Fe de Antioquia

Safety in Colombia I am not sure exactly who wrote the above comment but I have to object. I have been to Colombia many times in my life and I am living here now. I am a blonde haired, blue eyed, American and I have never had a problem. Use caution, just like you would anywhere you visit. But Colombia is far from "full of paramilitares or guerilla".

Two tourist sites worth seeing There are two places that have not been mentioned here before that I really recommend seeing. The first is "Museo Cementerio de San Pedro" The cemetary museum of San Pedro. It's a national landmark and very beautiful. The cemetary opened in 1842 and there are some absolutly amazing crypts. It doesn't cost anything to enter and you can ask any taxi driver in the city to take you there. Or you can take the metro and get off at "Estacion Hospital" and it's about 2 blocks away.
Within walking distance is "El Jardin Botanico de Medellin" The Medellin Botanic Gardens. At this moment it is under construction and so it's free until June 30th 2007. After that I am not sure what the fee is but I know it is not expensive. It's an amazing place and the Orchid garden is spectacular. I hope you all enjoy it.

A nice bar on La 70 A great little bar on La 70 is called Centro Artistico CADECOL. It's an authentic Antioqueno music bar at the corner of Carrera 70 and Cir 4ta. Mostly an older crowd, you wont see a whole lot of the younger generation there. But the music is moving and beautiful and the atmosphere is very relaxing. I would definately recommend it for a calm enjoyable evening.

Lexxy comments on Medellin travel guide

One of the best restaurants ever Hi, I am in Medellin and my family (Colombians) has been taking me around to some great places. I wanted to share a few here that I believe are worth the trip if you decide to check them out. One of the best restaurants I have been to is "Familia Garcia." They only serve one main lunch dish called "Sobrebarriga" (flank steak) and it is absolutly mouth wateringly amazing. It is a little hard to find so pay attention. It's in Barrio El Volador. Calle 73 with Carrera 69. You go down Calle 73 and turn down Carr 69. It's almost at the end of the group of buildings on your left. It's pretty cheap and well worth it!! Hope you all enjoy.
