I don't know the way or the place - Subjunctive!

I don't know all the gramatical terms because I forgot them. But allow me to explain a use of the subjuntive that get's little airplay but is extremely important. Usually subjunctive users focus on desires, wishes, demands, hopes, and emotions followed by QUE + SUBJ - "Espero que Lina TENGA su libro" - "I hope Lina has her book." A previous poster speaking here about the SUBJ said "Just learn the key phrases ["Espero que", "Ojala que", "Quiero que", etc...] because as we know forming it is ...

...he asked camply

I've just been reading rocinate's very interesting post 'Levels of politeness when requesting...' and I was struck by the phrase "In certain environments Quisiera could be viewed as faggy, or affected." Now that intrigues the heck out of me, because that's always how I request things over there. I must have said 'Quisiera una cerveza por favor' hundreds of times. And now it's come to be mentioned, I do recall a slight frisson from the waiter/ess of me having said something not quite right...O ...

Best free websites for learning Spanish

My favorite websites for learning Spanish. Wish someone had given me this list when I was starting out. 1. WordReference.com: An unusually comprehensive dictionary with an extensive set of forums where intelligent native speakers will comment on usage questions. 2. Spanish5000.com: By far the best site for learning Spanish vocabulary online, since it teaches words in context so that you absorb grammar at the same time you learn how to use the vocabulary you're studying. 3.

Pretéreto vs Imperfecto - two aspects of time. reprinted and altered froma previous post of mine in Friendly Talk Zone... Pretéreto vs Imperfecto: Pretérito is for completed processes in the past - a process that has a start, some duration and an end - or a specific event that took place. Quite often the Preterito will be used to describe actions that happened a certain number of times (I ate three hotdogs - or - I called you 3 times - ALWAYS take the preterito). The pretérito has no c ...

Interrupting phrases

When you are in a conversation and want to give an opinion, you can use this phrases: Perdón, pero yo creo que...(sorry, but I think that...) Perdón por interrumpir, pero (excuse me for the interrupting, but...) ¿Puedo agregar algo ? (Can I add something?) ¿Puedo decir algo? (Can I say something?) Me gustaría hacer un comentario sobre lo que estás diciendo (I'd like to comment on that) ¿Puedo hacer una pregunta? (Can/May I ask a question?) Then, to begin the sentence ...

Some questions

First rule is that in spanish you have to write the "¿" in the beggining of the question. For example: ¿Tuviste un viaje agradable ? (Did you have a nice journey ?) Tengan en cuenta que no se traduce literalmente. Sino que lo que importa es la idea que se quiere expresar. ¿Cuánto tiempo te vas a quedar? ¿Cuánto tiempo vas a estar? (How long are you staying?) ¿Estás disfrutando la reunión? ¿La estás pasando bien? (Are you enjoying the meeting?) ¿Dónde trabajás? (Where ...

Levels of politeness in requests or, asking for things.

Note – never does someone walk up to a stranger and say “¿Que hora es?" however it is in all the Travel Spanish Books and yes that is the translation but uh... Here is what I believe to be the setup and the level of politeness and I will use the MAIN VERB DAR (to give) in every example. Realize that “me gustaría‿ (“I would like‿) construct, and “Querer‿ (in the Conditional and Imp Subjunctive) are used as well when asking for something politely, but that’s for another post ...
