Just got a business one year renewable visa in the consulate in London , I have a limited company in England so all I had to do was show I had sufficient money, copy of my incorporation and a letter to the consul showing that I will be possible looking to make investments in Colombia...total time 2 hours..............the consul told me I could have got this visa in panama or adjoining country.

Couple of idea's.......a good tip for me was to try to think in spanish. And the obvious , go and live in a country which speak's good spanish , for this I choose Colombia.I always thought I would have learnt in Nicaragua but now I know the spanish there is generally crap. It's extremely difficult to reach a very good level of a new language without living in the country, I see this in Colombia where I have 4 tutors that all think they speak good English but realy only the tutor that lived in europe for a few years would survive the acid test. The acid test is to be able to stay engaged in a bar with some friends slightly drunk ,with music when they start to talk very fast ,all at the same time and with expressions. At the moment I'm failing this test badly...probably because I seem to get drunk before them.....

If you are able, leave Bogota , I had the same problem when I arrived in Bogota so I came to Pereira ......very friendly people in the streets/tiendas/bares that have time and inclination to pass some time with you.

This came about when an ex- novia was in my apartment at the same time as the espanol/colombiano and proceded to question him on things like the catalan and also I believe yoghurt has a different name en barcelona ......I guess I have to decide if the guy is using a front only to friendly or what !!
This country would be paradise if not for a small minority of people here!!!....but sod 'em slowly slowly I am developing a buena vida in this smashing town..

Sounds good !! Then simple it is...but a box of choc's and biscuits with a cheap ebay laptop seems pretty simple to me....

...what a plonker I was with the mobile saga ,all totally genuine but I have bought the spare screen in england for third of the price there....if I had followed a lot of the advise given here I would have thrown away the best thing that has happened to me for some time.....I have been on the receiving end of some latinas tricks before so my head went into meltdown for a while....so at the moment life is good.....pity about the dad but I will work on him !!!

Anybody have a opinion on or experience of how long this will take,I know this is subjective.
At the moment I am a good intermediate with writing and speaking but my comprehension is awful.
The longest I can stay in Colombia is 6 months and I hope this will be sufficient.
So if anyone has a name of a good school there ...digame por favor.
Also I will have around $ 400 per week to pay for apartment ,food ,etc .....am I going to struggle or what ?

100 % done deed With respect to wonderful people and a great reputation the clinic's security of my clothes whisl't under the knife was poor ,lockers but no locks!!!but still I thought this is a secure sugical area.

This event happaned and reported to a white coat within 15 mins of returning from surgery,I don't know end result ,too busy enjoying being nursed back to health by an absolute angel.

Their mistake was to replace new notes with old as I would not have been able to spot difference with my somewhat blurred eyesight.

This is not an attempt to slag off the clinic ,just the truth and a little heads up.

Bank wise I am going to try hsbc first then banistmo.......as long as they have no disclusure arrangement with euronanny land.

Veneto wise ,when I was there en november I noticed the women were quite spectacular but at the time I was suffering from some Nicaraguan inspired illness ......so this time I am hoping to have a little /lot of fun.

Veiwpoint. Thanks for your remarks..........as long as I can get the account opening under way with no futher personal appearances required the time factor y credit card facility is not a issue.

Not really looking to do dodgy dealing just want secrecy and non disclosure as regards euroland and uk authorities.( all offshore accounts in euroland now are subject to a withholding tax).......there is nothing irregular about what I intend to do .NOW if I tried to take monies back to looney euroland(u.k) without disclosing...then I would be for the tower.

All I want from a panama account is they tell other authorities(non panama) to pis(h) off if they come knocking ...so if anyone can give a definite answer.............

Veneto got to be worth a try ( normally get a good coporate at el panama ) but I like the look of their gym/health suite.

hsbc An English bank in Panama....I wonder about the secrecy and non disclosure aspect....this is very important for me due futher plans.
..but I can always ask so if can give any info or details it will be a great help to me.

I will be in Panama 16th of March for 7 days ( going to try the Veneto this time)before 3 weeks in Bogota and surrounding area.

I hope 7 days is enough to get the account set up completed.
I have got a bank reference ,accountant reference ,passport ,and utility bill....surely this is sufficient?????

I have no intention at this point in time of giving up english residency( I have a limited co en england so keeping the n.i.payments ,etc is not a problem),also A long way from retirement ( 18 years to go at present,but this could change with our chancellor spending like no to-morrow).

The pot of money is an attempt to avoid wealth tax and get into some good funds which are closed off to normal uk residents.
I will keep a small property and move everything else offshore .
I thought this was the preserve of the very weathy but with ever increasing taxation ,I feel it is time to fight back where I can.

Panama is the offshore target but colombia is where I am going to spend quite some time.

Ldw.....not a big fan of multi culturism I assume. Yes It's starting to come off the rails here but soon I will be the in the minority (in colombia)

More info-ryan..... Non- us........cornish but we have been taken over by the english for a little time( 1400 years).

I am looking for non euro land offshore juristriction(sp) and Panama is a possibility because I travel to Panama before going to Colombia and also Nicaragua where I sometimes work.

Thales is the name of a panamamian brokerage ,anyone have any dealings with them?

I am not an expert but with u.k wealth taxes on the rise and the advantage to be able to deal in hedge funds/alternative markets this seems like a intresting venture .
This is solely for capital growth with a view to finance long term stay in central america.

Look at Nicaragua. There is a company with three schools across nica located in Leon,Granada and San Juan Del Sur.
You can move between the three as you like ,it's a great way to get around .
I have studied at two and can really recommend them,the rates are fantastically reasonable and the country is a dream so peaceful and beautiful.
All my time en central america is now divided between nica y colombia.
If you are intrested let me know and I will fill you in on the details.

Thanks for the responses so far.. ...I guess if cartagena and panama now have similar price structures perhaps the financail incentives of panama could be the deciding factor.........but if there is a glut in cart' it could be a good time to deal ........
..I guess this march when I return to colombia and panama is going to be spent pounding the streets and the agents to try to get a grasp of respective local conditions........but both places compared with anything in europe now seem quite resonable priced......reminds me of spain and the spanish islands( tenerife,etc) some years ago...............thanks again for you replies ....
