It seems that in Southwestern Colombia (I will say below Valle del Cauca) that the Farc does conduct periodic checkpoints..I have never seen this to be the case in Valle as I have family there and visit places from Buenaventura to Tulua, all the way up north to Cartago, when I visit there. I have never seen a checkpoint. How often do these checkpoints happen? Has anyone here been stopped by non-military in a checkpoint?? health condition of the hostages a surprise

does anyone else here wonder how the freed hostages came out of the jungle with a clean bill of health? Obiously per what the media has reported thus far.. No infectious diseases, parasitic or viral, nada.. How can one reside in the jungle with all the parels of wild animals being your neighbors, malnutrition, unsanitary conditions, medicines, etc and come out looking half way decent? safety of pan american highway from Cali to Pasto

Hello, Has anyone ventured out of Valle towards Popayan or Pasto on the Pan American Highway lately? I know it surrounds Guerrilla territory, however I havent read any reports of kidnappings or other mishaps along the highway, I guess it is patrolled by the military strongly? Am I correct? I know that mona generally means blond in Colombian slang, however I have seen time after time that women with fairer skin however with all the other dark features typical of a Latin American woman are still called "mona". HELP-BURIAL QUESTION

My American father died yesterday in CALI.
He had no will or death insurance plan. He died at an indigant hospital-San Jaun de Dios.

As far as burial is concerned; I understand if I don't come up with the funds for burial; in a matter of time, the morgue will send his body to a "fosa Comun". Is anyone here familial with this? Is it the same as a mass grave?

I have to come up with $2,000 in cash in two days if I want to prevent the Colombian govt from disposin ...

I noticed a lot of my peers in Colombia refer to young middle class girls as "una nina bonita" What does this label imply about an individual. I have also heard males described in the same respect-"nino bonito".

Does anyone know name of Courier that US Embassy Uses??

My father has been waiting weeks..to recieve his US passport that he had renewed. He is not ambulatory so the Embassy came to his to help him reapply. The passport per them was mailed from Bogota to him on 5/8. He resides in Tulua, Valle. Why do you suppose it has been taking this long?

Does anyone know the name of the courier that the Embassy uses? He said that all he knew was that it started with a "D". No it is not DHL he is familiar with them as he use to work w/ them...

Thanks to you suggestions I have narrowed my project for my IB class down to the following:[energy resources]- exporting either heat exchanges, generater sets ,relays, circuits breakers, or the "on demand water heater" to Colombia. My question is-would it be easier to import the selected energy product from China or the USA, as from what I understand there seems to exist some kind of reduced or zero tariff in play in Red China?

Airfare from Panama to Cali

I am trying to get from CLT to CLO on the cheapest airfare.

Bogotanos v/ vallunos

I am Calena by birth so naturally I am a little biased here. Out of curiosity though since I do not live in el pais and am very angloized I don't have that much insight into the culture specifically; getting acquainted though. What is the main difference between los vallunos as we are called and people from Cundinamarca departamento?? I just meet a guy from Bogota, and am a little interested in why he has a different accent, mannerisms, etc?

Tulua??????

I seen the recent post in reference to the roadblock on via Buga-Tulua, which I call the road of death, since my younger brother jsut shy of 15 years, got killed in a taxi accident. So needless to say, I call this via, "road of death."-But back to my question, I didn't know that Farc patrolled northern Valle del Cauca. I am scheduled to see Dad around the Holidays, and am wanting some validation that Tulua is safe. Is it???????
