Colombia VS Republic of Ireland (London) May 29th

Am going to the match 29th May at Fulham but need to find a hotel close by. Can anyone recommend anywhere before I start to trawl the internet. Anyone else going? It'll be my son's first live international match and an opportunity for him to wear the team strip he got from Colombia last month! ...

Returning from Colombia to Uk

Nothing mjuch to say just some observations about finally seeing the place you were brought up in through the eyes of an outsider. My husband has just returned from a week on the Pacific coast and a week in Cali and he said this is the first time he has returned to England and felt that he was 'coming home' He lost his voice for 3 days then was in bed with the shits for 2 days and missed all the carnival celebrations! The heat was too much for him and for the first time in his life he was bothe ...

UK sterling in Colombia

Uk bank accounts charge £1.50 for every withdrawal abroad. The max you can withdraw from an ATM in Colombia is $300 a day which is nothing. So what's the best way to take money? Travellers cheques? Don't want to change from pounds to dollars then to pesos and have wads of cash. Travelling Thursday. ...

Apologies if it gets posted next to the google ads but I don't know if anyone can help to put it under the ads so the whole screen can be seen?

colombian restaurants paris

Off to Paris next weekend and wondered if anyone knows of any Colombian restaurants there worth going to? I can look on the net but if anyone has first hand experience that would be good

Name that barrio (Medellin)

I am having trouble remembering the name of the barrio where I lived when I first went to live in Medellin. It is off El Poblado avenue, in front of a supermarket and near the calle 10 (the other sided of it. Was it Crespo or am I getting confused with somewhere else?? Don't know. Liked it a lot. Theree is (was) a mexican restaurant there. The other side of it was a shopping centre (bit of a crappy one) which I also forget the name of. It's just annoying me that I can't remember. On the Avenida ...

help with buying property in Cali

I have an apartment in Cartagena and am thinking of buying somewhere cheap in Cali. Anyone know of any websites?

A world apart

A typical conversation between my husband and whichever member of his family answers the phone goes like this '....y cuantos dias tienen sin agua ahora? Esa puta guerilla .....'or '....cuanto tiempo ahora lleva sin luz? 'Esa puta guerilla' (regular bombing of elecricity power supply). Or'....asi que no hay como salir del pueblo?' 'que? No pueden llegar los camiones? (landslide)...'Esa puta gobierno que no hace nada por alli....' 'Como? lo mataron?.... (old school friend).'Como? Se metieron en la ...

Anyone been to Chaney

club in Elephant and Castle? Looking for somewhere new to dance salsa. The bar itself looks a bit shit but thought the club downstairs might be good. Is it on Friday nights only? Do people go to dance at La Mazorca (Brixton) on a Friday? Have been on a Saturday and that was good. ...

What happened the first time your Colombiano/Colombiana saw snow?

Today saw the first snow fall in the UK this year (and it was quite pitiful I have to say, but still....).It bought back memories of my husband's first snow experience ( he is from Tumaco)- he put on his boots and ran out the back door and round the back garden. And that was all he had on - his boots! Today he just peered out the window and moaned as he had to go to work on his motorbike. What did you/your partners do? A bit like my first earthquake. I ran out of the school library I was working ...

Islas del Rosario

Just got back from Cartagena and am wondering how you can find out about buying an island in Islas del Rosario? Just dreaming.....but can't find any info on the web. On a trip out to Isla del Pirata a girl got off with her groceries and stepped aboard her own private island and that got me thinking why not me!!!?? ...

What colour is Father Christmas?

As my son has lived most of his life in the UK (he is 6) he was bought up with the idea of Father Christmas bringing his presents when he is asleep on the night of 24th Dec. As we will be in Colombia this year he reasons that Father Christmas will still visit us in the UK and leave presents if we write and let him know beforehand. However, he was worried as he thought if he saw the beds were empty he might not leave anything so he has asked his grandparents to sleep in them while we are away to ...

Help! problem with PBH font size

Why is it that on my PC at work (where I waste most of the day checking in and out to PBH) the font size is perfect - but on my PC at home I can't read it as it's too small. It's gives me greater justification for spending more time on PBH at work but is frustrating if it's the weekend or I'm on holiday. Is it a PBH problem or should I adjust something on my PC? I am not a computer nerd so I need advice. ...

Last minute vaccination panic

When I went to the doctor to get tetnus and Hep A vaccinations for me and my son last week he strongly advised yellow fever for us both as well as malaria tablets. We are leaving UK in 2 days and I haven't done anything about this. Last time I completely forgot my yellow fever vaccination had run out and my son didn't have it either. I have never taken malaria tablets in my life (I lived in Ecuador for 8 years, Colombia for one and other visits) but the doctor made me think perhaps I am being ir ...

Where can I change British pounds (£) into pesos?(urgent)

Will any bank accept £'s for pesos in Colombia? My husband was stuck in Cali yesterday with a bank card that wouldn't let him get any money out and only has £'s (sterling)in his pocket. He has got to leave Cali before the banks open today and needs to know where to go when trading starts to change up his pounds. Don't suppose the taxi driver at the other end will accept his cash!! ...

Good hotel for overnight Cali?

I am looking for somewhere near the airport in Cali to lay down from midnight til 6am (preferably in a hotel that is, not under a viaduct) as the next days flight is at 7am.
Any suggestions?

Nightmares about Colombia

Don't worry this is not a scare mongering thread. Just interested to know if anyone else has suffered this. When I met my husband (Colombian) he used to suffer from nightmares where he would wake up with a jolt or grind his teeth and moan. After we got married (6 years ago)he stopped all this but he is going to Colombia in 10 days time and about a week ago the nightmares started again. I just feel so sad that going to your own country can inspire such worry and fear.I think that once you move aw ...

Where to shop in Cartagena?

When I lived in Medellin I did nearly all my shopping at the Exito in Envigado. I've been to Cartagena about 6 times and need to know where there is a large hypermarket (previously I have been directed to Olympia but it only has food). I don't want to shop for handicrafts etc I need shoes, sandals, curtains, toys, cushions etc. Is there not a large shopping mall anywhere? Also, where should we go to buy fresh fish? ...

Football in Cartagena

My son is now mad on football since the world cup it's all 'Ecuador is the best'(where he was born) and 'Why weren't Colombia in the World Cup?' (he is 5). We are going to Cartagena in a month and I want him to see a match. Where is the stadium in Cartagena and when do they play? Doesn't matter if they are shit he just wants to see a match as he's never been to one. Is it cheap to get in?
Cheers. ...

Best way to book Hotel Sheraton Four Points Bogota?

Have got to stay overnight in Bogota and have chosen Four Points cos can't be arsed to get a taxi to the centre of the city. Rang them direct and they quoted me $165 or something ridiculous like that, then on the web I see a price of $81 including taxes. I am thinking they may present me with outragous taxes if I book on the net. Anyone stayed there and how did you book? Thanks ...

Which music is closest to a Colombians heart?

Last Saturday morning I put on some Vallenato full blast to cheer up my husband (we are in the UK) only to be told to turn it off as he couldn't listen to this music anymore (makes him too homesick). Salsa or reggaeton is OK but not Vallenato. Anyone else experienced this reaction? Is it mainly Vallenato that triggers the emotions with Colombians abroad? I now listen to it in the car... ...

The only Brit in the house

Last week we went to a restaurant and club in London for some Colombian atmosphere. GREAT club - the house was jumping BUT all those women in little bitty clothes and shaking their bods made me feel very inferior being the only (Brit) girl not able to do Reggaeton with great confidence (and certainly without the bod to match (I won't pretend to be her who I'm not). Any other foreign women feel like that when surrounded by skinny midriffs gyrating? I had forgotten what the competition was like! S ...

Buy internal flights in UK or in Colombia?

I have just rung Avianca in UK to check prices of internal flights and have been quoted Bogota to Tumaco £130 and Bogota to Cartagana £130 one way. This seems quite expensive to me or am I behind the times with prices? (last time in Colombia was 2004). Could I get better prices paying for them in Colombia? ...

Anyone been to Tairona recently?

Have been to Parque Tairona many times though not since 1999 now and not with my son so would like to take him there but only if safe to do so. Opinions please?

What to do with a depressed Colombian in smallsville, UK?

He has lost his sunny smile, his loud laugh now rarely heard, little singing at the top of his lungs ( loud enough to wake up the whole barrio). I buy fish (it doesn’t taste the same as in Colombia), we go dancing (no one understands how you’re supposed to just enjoy it, not worry about the moves). I listen to Vallenato (it just makes him homesick).
Anyone else in the same boat? How do you cope? Is it worth being here when I can be reasonably happy just about anywhere? I think I can ...

Pre-Colombino tattoo designs

In a moment of madness and totally in love with my (now) Colombian husband I had a tattoo done in Medellin. It is the reverse of one of the peso coins (the 1 peso coin I think). The coin gave me the idea for the design but at that time I also had a book of Pre Colombian designs which I lost somewhere along the way. I am now thinking of getting another so can anyone recommend a book or website where I can view designs. Have just spent ages on line trying to find some but can't. Or if anyone has a ...

How to amuse a five year old in CTG??

My son is used to going to play centres, parks, farms, walking in the country, picnics, kids theatre etc here in the UK. Last time we went to CTG he was 3 and wanted to spend his time in the kids pool. That was OK but am now looking for other things for him to do when we go in Dec. I could only find one park (next to the pink hotel in el Laguito) which was mainly closed. He didn't like the beach much and there didn't seem to be anywhere to take him. Went to Hilton pool one day and to Islas Rosar ...

Teeth whitening Cartagena

Am visiting CTG in Dec - anyone had this done there? What process do they use and can anyone recommend a place (have got a couple of places off internet). Here in UK it costs about £300 and they use a process which does not damage the enamal. My pearlies are alright really but just thought well if it's cheap enough- why not? ...

Why does no one talk about Tumaco??!!

Over the last 2 years I have posted 2 or 3 posts asking for travellers views on Tumaco. Suppose no one goes there - but thought maybe someone surely must have passed that way in the last 2 years since my first post!!
Anyone know which is the best hotel? Of course I can get this info by just phoning my mother-in-law (who is there - I am in UK) but would like a western point of view. Can't decide whether to pay a quick visit in Dec while I am in Colombia or just have abuelita come and stay ...

New Years Eve cartagena

I will be in Cartagena with my husband and 6 year old son over Xmas and would like to know if anyone can recommend a nice restaurant to book for New Years Eve. Our son eats most things (loves fish and prawns - of course as his dad is costeno!. Don't mind spending a bit if it's worth it. ...

British women married to Colombian men

I am a British woman and I just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there who is married to a Colombian and living in the UK. We have been married for 6 years and have a son. How do your husbands cope with life here? We were married in Ecuador (where I lived for 8 years) and moved to the Uk in 2002 but my husband is still not really settled here.He is from the Pacific coast. I miss it too!! Sometimes as much as him. We know a couple of Colombians but it seems it's more the atmosphere of t ...
