My gameplan is to rent a car when I fly to the states for the week I am there every 6 weeks or so and save the money on the car/parking/insurance for the car in Florida. New restaurant in Medellin -- called Mex Cal - on Las Palmas just South of Palmetias. This is the first restaurant I have been to in Colombia that has real mole!! I found a source for GPS maps for Colombia. I have a Garmin Street Pilot C550 that I bought reconditioned at buy.com for right at 90 dollars. I used this Garmin many times driving around the US and Canada and have found many good restaurants and bars using the database built in the maps. Spent Saturday and Sunday night at Kevins Hotel Cra 3a, 20-85 in Tolu - nice and clean, AC, nice pool, 3 blocks from beach, secure - 80,000 for 2 per night (cash or debit, add 7% for CC). Let around 2PM from Monteria towards Tolu - the distance is maybe 100km. The road is very good - and for the most part it's possible to get 100-120km/hr as it is very straight. Stopped along the way at a "place" for a couple of Pilsens - then proceeded. The road goes northwest from Monteria and then you need to hang a left in a small town - the roads are clearly marked. Well, I am in Monteria. Stayed last night at Hotel Campestre on highway 23 close to the center of town. The hotel is clean, nice and typical but is on a busy highway. The price is 164,000 includings IVA and breakfast for 2. The rooms are small, free wifi, air conditioning and like most places where its very hot, no running hot water. In America, when we make a major purchase (house, car, etc.) the amount of taxes paid is a line item under deductions on the 1040 return. For example, if you pay property taxes in Florida of $5000 a year, this $5000 is a write off under taxes paid. Likewise, you buy a car in Florida and pay sales tax, this is also a line item deduction.
