Yes I have been to Laos and I must say I absolutely loved it! The people must be among the friendliest people on this planet and the scenery is perfect paradise (without a coast).
I went in 2002 and there were barely any tourists since the country had just recently opened its gates to tourism. Fantastic! I had traveled to Vietnam first where my high expectations were not met, I found a country with an established tourist trail everybody followed and it was hard to leave that trail. So I decided to cross into Laos and I found paradise. Even the beer was great!!!
