LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Colombianos en cualquier parte del mundo

"where is that Colombian restaurant, I have been in Prague 3 times never seen it :((( if it's in Prague" It's in Prague, a block north from the Dancing Building (just follow the river). I thought having just one restaurant kinda sucked, but a couple of Colombian friends living in Denmark always insist on going there when they come. We may not have an embassy or a consulate in Czech Republic, but we can always have frisoles when we feel like it!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Colombianos en cualquier parte del mundo

This Colombian is in Czech Republic. There are quite a few others around here, there's even a colombian restaurant (http:\\www.donpedro.cz). Actually they serve Colombian and TexMex food, but hey! they gotta make a living. What are you doing in Latvia for Christ sake??? I have a friend from Estonia who moved over here to Prague because he says the generally-shitty-and-right-now-sub-zero-celsius-weather is great when compared to the Baltic weather!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Centro Cultural Garcia Marquez

It's already open. I was there a couple of weeks ago and it's quite nice. There's a large bookshop of "El Fondo de Cultura Económico" and a Juan Valdez Coffee shop on the ground floor. The coffee shop has outdoor tables. It's all quite nice. No usable restrooms yet, but one can walk a block and use the Museo Botero's ones. Enjoy!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Thanks Chavez!

Dear Mr. Chavez, I usually disagree both with your ideas and your very particular way of putting them in practice. Although I share the dream of a united, proud and equal Latin America, I don't think the Bolivarian Revolution is the way. However, no matter what our differences are, I thank you deeply for what you have done and for your assistance in the liberation of three Colombian hostages: Every kidnapped person is an open wound for the rest of the country. Our country will never be whole until the last one of the kidnapped is returned to us, to their country, to their families, to the place where they belong and where we are waiting for them. I ask you to put the same effort and energy in bringing back the less prominent hostages, both the "political" and the "economical" ones. Please remember that all the people subject to kidnapping are Colombians either by birth or because they have lived and suffered beside us in this, our cruel land capable of both great beauty and nobility but also of great cruelty and evil: The three US contractors held by the FARC are our brothers and countrymen and will remain so until we can return them safely to their families. Thanking you again for your efforts I wish you and Venezuela the best of lucks, a fellow Latin American.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Bullfighting

It's seasonal. Usually the bullfighting season is concurrent with the local festivities, e.g., Feria de Cali or Feria de Manizales. In Bogotá the season is about to begin and goes up to February: http://www.portaltaurino.com/colombia/bogota.htm

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Academic bookstore in Bogotá

I'm not really sure what you mean by "academic" books. However, the Lerner Bookstore (Librería Lerner) is one of the oldest and largest bookstores in Bogotá and they do have a pretty good selection in social sciences. http://librerialerner.com.co/tienda/catalog/index.php You can find them downtown very near the "Museo del Oro" stop of transmilenio if you keep going up the Jimenez street. They're just beside a "Crepes and Waffers" restaurant. Librería Lerner Centro Av. LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on anyone remember the eighties band pasaporte(igor y penelope)?

Elsa is still singing? Great!!! Send her my fondest regards, she was my pre-adolescence symbol of rebellion!!! I just saw some memorabilia of "Pasaporte" in the "Nación Rock" exhibit at the National Museum and I was actually wondering what they were up to and why they didn't make any more records. She also came up with one of the most accurate descriptions of my beloved hometown: BOGOTA DEL PUTAS!!!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on 12 day trip to Columbia: Any advice on the best way to travel from Bogota to Cartagena to Medellin?

Learning how to spell the name of the country correctly will be an awful lot of help when trying to purchase a map.

I got the same one forwarded to my personal email from my PBH account today.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Transmilenio

Get off at Museo del Oro. For Quinta de Bolivar it's the next stop, Las Aguas, although both stations are within walking distance. El Museo Nacional is a bit more to the North, it's more convenient to go off at Calle 26 stop: http://www.ciudadmovil.com.co/q/mod/mapa/bogota.php http://www.museonacional.gov.co/mapa.html Enjoy your explorations!

Went to Me-excitas del Colegio? Good alternative to Tirardot or Nalgar.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on What is the Spanish idiom?

Thought a bit more "Las carreras solo traen cansancio". It means the same as "Del afan solo queda cansancio. "Las carreras" means "the races", i.e., hurries, to do something in a hurry.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on What is the Spanish idiom?

Ok. Maybe it was "Del afán no queda sino el cansancio" or "el afán solo trae cansancio". Literally "Only fatigue will come from a hurry" meaning that you gain nothing from doing something in a hurry. Well, if all roads lead to Rome, how do Romans leave Rome for vacations? Do they have to walk backwards?

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Cedula number lookup

As far as I know the Cédula number is a citizen's private and protected information. Think Social Security number. Of course, I'm sure many people at DAS could do it and I'm also pretty sure it's illegal.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on THE Willys jeep

I hadn't seen Centella's link, it's all there waaaaay better explained, Duh!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on THE Willys jeep

As the legend goes... Once WWII and the Corea war were over, the US began selling or donating a lot of surplus war material to the military around the world. During the 50's a lot of Willys (specially model 56, I believe) arrived to Colombia to be used by the military and then by civilians. They proved ideal for the rough terrain and steep hills of the Central and Western Range of Los Andes, i.e. the coffee producing zone. They are so popular over there that there is even a trade unit called "yipao" which is a jeep-load of .... you name it! Yipao de platanos, yipao de café, yipao de gente... There's a "Club Willys" in Colombia and most discontinued spare parts are made locally. http://groups.msn.com/UsuariosyAmigosdelJeepWillys/4anivclubwillyssantacruz.msnw

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Getting organized before I get out of here (gym and book question)

"Trochas y Fusiles" by Alfredo Molano is a very interesting and entertaining book about the emergence of the "Liberal Guerrillas" in the 50s and about how they evolved into the FARC. I don´t know if it has been translated. http://www.amazon.com/Trochas-y-fusiles-Alfredo-Molano/dp/9583600016/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196785397&sr=8-15 If you´re feeling really sporty you could run to El Rodadero from Santa Marta (less than 3 miles, be careful with cars and buses though) and then do some chin ups at the beach. There are some really really buff types there, not to mention fruit and coconut vendors who have nothing to do during the whole day but exercise.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Colombia according to Hollywood

Robert Jorge... you outdid yourself. That was the best comeback to a stupid joke about Colombia coming from a Romanian: Calling him a gypsy!!! The only thing worse than that is insisting that Romania is called like that because it's where the Roma people come from.

Superman III, in which Supes saves the Colombian coffee production of that year. It looked like the Highlands of Bolivia but hey!, I saw this when I was 12 so I can't be sure. Lord of War. Nicolas Cage gets paid with a briefcase full of cocaine when he delivers a cargo of weapons in Cartagena. Mmhhh... more coming as I think of them.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on yoyoma

Hi. I just read your post looking for a language partner. My mom is looking for a language buddy to practice her English. She's a happily married (to my dad, no less!) retired college teacher. We lived some years in the mid-west while my parents did post-graduate studies. Her spoken English is getting rusty from lack of use. Would you mind giving me some information about yourself? Cheers, Juan

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on COLOMBIA, sounds in the whole world

Saw it this morning in Canal Capital. Cool. Kinda reminds me of the video(s) of "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" by Cake. Jueeeeeeeppaaaa!!!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on A true Colombian!!!

The "Oración Patria" (roughly the Homeland Prayer). I had to repeat a slightly different version of that almost every day during my military service's basic instruction: Colombia patria mía: Te llevo con amor en mi corazón, Creo en tu destino y espero verte siempre Grande, respetada y libre. "Hijo" can be replaced by "soldado" or "policía" depending on where you did your service. We had to shout and hit our chest in the part of "and DIE!!! to defend you".

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Nigerian spammer

Some creative solutions have been found over here to deal with spammers: http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2003/02/57760 Nigerian Slain Over E-Mail Scam A notorious e-mail scam has resulted in the murder of a Nigerian diplomat in the Czech Republic. Fifty-year-old Michael Lekara Wayid, Nigeria's consul in the Czech Republic, was shot dead by an unidentified 72-year-old Czech at the Nigerian Embassy in Prague on Wednesday. According to police reports, the suspect was a victim of the 419 scam, a thriving industry that employs thousands of people around the world. The scammers successfully manage to extort money from thousands of victims by promising them compensation for assistance in moving funds from foreign countries to banks in the United States.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Slang for illiterate..

Montañero? Roughly "Hilllbilly".

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Treatment of women in Colombia

A horrible thing. I like to think that us average colombians would never do this.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Treatment of women in Colombia

I agree with La Mona (todo bien Mona?), while in Spain there where almost daily reports of women beaten or killed by their partners and ex partners, but it mostly (if not always) it involved Spanish people, not immigrants. Certainly never colombians. "That said domestic violence is rampant amongst uneducated people from dysfunctional backgrounds, although it is not rare in more affluent classes, they just seem to conceal it better." I agree completely, I do think our domestic violence statistics must be pretty bad, specially in poor rural areas. Sometimes rich people don't conceal it that well. There was a famous, or rather infamous, case about a year ago of a high class woman beat by her husband on a club's parking lot in Barranquilla (http://www.elcolombiano.com.co/BancoConocimiento/E/el_silencio_es_complice_1/el_silencio_es_complice_1.asp) [La] Policía de El Prado, [...] al ver a Lizzette golpeada se limitaron a decir: "se le fue la mano al marido, vuelva a las nueve que ahora está dormido el encargado".

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Italy Says No! to Kidnapping

Wasn't it in the stairway of the Piazza di Spagna where one of my fellow colombian citizens decided to park his car while driving drunk? I think he actually damaged some of the steps!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Slang for illiterate..

You can say someone is "Negado" or "Negada". It is an adjective meaning completely useless for something, e.g. "Ese gringo es negado para el español." ;-) negado, da. (Del part. de negar). 1. adj. Incapaz o totalmente inepto para algo. U. t. c. s.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Recycled Colombia Jokes...

I actually heard a good cocaine joke once. I was telling this dutch about how good surgery, specially esthetic surgery, was in colombia. I said even Maradona went there for his gastro-intestinal bypass. The guy just stared at me and said "Well, maybe he went there because of something else, you know?". I just had to laugh.

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Recycled Colombia Jokes...

I usually try to answer as harshly and rudely as possible to this kind of jokes about Colombia. When a czech comes out with the joke I usually ask things like "So, did your dad do enough dough in the StB (Czechoslovakian version of KGB) to sustain your addiction?". If its a german who asks for it I'll say something like "OK, but I don't take gold teeth or soap as payement". Another good answer is "So, do you sell it to your neighbor's kids or is it your mom that's a junkie?" Why do it? Because it transmits immediately the idea that Colombia's situation is not a joke, that making jokes about it a belittling it is demeaning. On the long term I'm trying to say "Hey, we're people, we're not walking cartoons fot your amusement. And because of the consumption of cocaine in YOUR country, my countrmen die". I answered something along this lines when a teacher at the lab introduced me to a visitor as "the lab's cocaines supplier". He didn't speak to me in months, but after that he was cool. In general the reaction is like "Sorry, I didn't know it was like that", and then you can start blabbering about Colombia's beaches, mountains, Garcia Marquez and Shakira (Usually people think she's mexican!)

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Margarita Rosa de Francisco

Rumor had it some years ago that she would like 29 year-old... gals. So maybe you don't qualify. I remember someone telling me that she saw Margarita Rosa and Alejandra Borrero (an excellent colombian actress who is openly gay) being quite... friendly in a restaurant. If you have any information of this Gabolicious please report immediately. Photos and videos are also welcome!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Margarita Rosa de Francisco

You lucky lucky bastard!

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Colombiano o Espanol ?.

Correct! Espanyol is Catalan for "spanish". I thought they wrote it as eitjer espanyol or español, but no, its only Espanyol.

From Wikipedia:
"In 1906 the club folded due to financial reasons and most of the players joined the X Sporting Club. This club won the Campionat de Catalunya three times between 1906 and 1908. In 1909 this club was effectively relaunched as Club Deportivo Español and in 1910 they adopted the present day colours in honour of Admiral Roger de Llúria, a Catalan naval hero."

LaMovidCh(u)eca comments on Colombiano o Espanol ?.

Hi,

I lived in Barcelona for almost 3 years. Yes, it is possible that someone who was born and raised in Barcelona doesn't speak catalan but it is very unlikely, specially with younger people (catalan was reinstituted as an official language in 1978, after Franco died). Everyone that goes to public schools nowadays has to study it, but that doesn't mean they actually learn it. Met a young girl who understood it perfectly, but would never speak it because all her friends only spoke in Spanish. How old is this person?

I think the Español-Barcelona question is a good one. You might also ask him in what stadium they play. That´s a trick question because Español plays in the Olympic Stadium and Barcelona in the Camp Nou. You might ask him what neighborhood he's from.

Good luck,

P.S. Pronuncing c and z as "th" is the standard way in Spain. What Andalucians and latin american do ("s" sound instead of "th") is not "ceceo" but "seseo", "ceceo" is the other way around ("th" instead of "s"). Beautiful thing is that for those who "sesan" , like colombians, both are pronounced identically.
