Need some advise on this. I´ve been offering classes for groups of 10, with no takers. My group classes are cheap, ($10,000 per hour) but apparently most potential students prefer one on one. I know that various schools in Bogotá charge $25,000 to $30,000 pesos per hour for English, but the instructor goes to the place the student chooses. I would like to have the student come to my home, because I have the necessary materials and equipment to do a better job there.
Would $ ...
I just wanted to share this with everyone:
Light shattered eye of a newborn
Burning fluid intensity
A mote on the breathless air
The African glistens
The linear universe is nude
El Greco slides, the eye blinks
Furiouser & furiouser spins Alice´s homeland
The celestial dust cloud descends
Barriers become necessities
For the priest with a thousand sighs
Smiles like Caravagio dark and light
We had a great time at the first Bogotá meetup last night! Interesting people and a very nice little bar/restaurant, "Sopa de Letras" in Chapinero. Thanks for all the work Pedro!

Peter, there seems to be a glitch in the private message—it isn´t always bringing the email address in automatically.

Just today got my one year temp visa from DAS. It will take me through my official retirment. Do I have to go back to the states to apply for a retirement visa or can it be done from Bogotá?
Any help ot there?

Disclaimer: Some of this may be helpful, and some not so helpful, but all of the following is couched in actual practice, not fantasy. It is intended to be a guide for travelers who might not realize the danger when it presents itself. The best advice, is to not act the tourist if you can help it, and move about in a confident and purposful way. Confused looking people seem to be wearing a target for the bad guys and women, so don´t act confused or thoughtless in your travels. This is not i ...
Anyone out there know where I can find books of all types and subjects printed in English in Bogotá? I´m a serious reader, and have run out of things to read. My Spanish is improving, but not good enough to use for reading enjoyment yet.
Any advice will be welcomed.
Thanks,
LaloG ...
Anyone know where nonpirated DVD´s and VHS tapes can be purchased in Bogotá? The pirated type a friend has loaned me don´t always work in my player, which came from the US. Besides that, I don´t like the idea of ripping off artists by buying the pirated versions of things I want to see.
Any help in finding these (especially in English) would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Some of the problems first: Colombians typically have smaller butts than the rest of the world. Chairs and other seating have small areas in which to put your butt. That said, it is very easy to have things custom made here. If you like the style of some item, but it is too small for you or other members of your family, enquire about a custom size. We found the shops can usually get anything they want out of the manufactures . . .if you don´t mind waiting. Very little is in stock typically ...
For fashionable clothing you have the usual choices you might experience anywhere else. Large department style shopping malls; UniCentro, Metropolis, and several others usually found in the North of the city where most of the foriegn money resides, as well as the more middle and upper class Colombians. Some of these malls are larger than their typical counterparts in the US, and have a wide range of shopping opportunities. Of course, these venues are more costly, because a lot of what they of ...
This is a brief rundown for new residents in Bogotá:
If you are looking for a similar experience to the supermarkets in the US and other first world countries, then there are a number of possibilities available in Bogotá.
If you go back and read my posts, you will find my POV is that Bogotá or for that matter, any city in Colombia is no more or no less dangerious than any other major city in the world. They all have their problems with crime. The point I tried to make with gringoinbogotá, was that the intelligent traveler would be aware of his or her surroundings at all times, and act appropriately.
What I get back from gringoinbogotá, is that I don´t live here (false) and that I have my head up my ...
Hey Peter, this guy is doing more damage than any possible good. Can you do anything about stopping his hate program about Colombia, and Colombians. As you may remember, my partner and I moved to Bogotá in March of last year, and have since purchased a house in Candelaria, and I can attest for a fact that nearly everything he warns against is not actually happening on the scale he indicates. He´s a bad actor, who ought to go home to Bushland and tell his horror stories to other hate mongers ...
I nominate Dubya.
Any native U. S./English speakers in Bogotá that would like to get together occassional to meet new friends and have a good time, send a private e-mail and we will plan something. We have a place to meet in Candelaria in a beautiful ols colonial style home. Lte´s hear from all of you that are interested. ...
I have noticed postings here by people who don´t seem to know what they are talking about regarding some of the dangers in Colombia. While there are obvious dangers, and normal precautions should be taken, (As in any large city, or any country for that matter,) posting bogus warnings does absolutly nothing for Colombia or the PBH site.
Maybe a little more intelligence or thoughtfulness is in order before posting such crap like the busses are now working with guards riding in the ...
Anyone have one?
As a new resident in La Candelaria, I have noticed a number of acts of kindness in my new neighborhood. I thought I´d like to share a few so others might chime in with other such acts elswhere in the country.
People give food to the homeless form their own plates in outdoor restaurants.
At the end of business hours, left over rice is often spresd out for the birds.
Dogs are fed by people leaving food around for them to find. The ownerless dogs of ...
Does anyone have knowledge of a group of North Americans in Bogota that meet occassionally to discuss anything of interest. . . Or barring that, would any North Americans in Bogota like to get together in a private home in La Candelaria for a simmilar purpose. . . ...
