Great hostel! I recommend it to anyone and everyone!!

This year in Colombia, I've been staying at a hostel called Bogota B y B. It's located in Tuesaquillo, Avenida 32 #15-63. The staff here is great; the other night we all went out for some live salsa with the some of the staff. Everyone is incredibly friendly. I've been in Hostel International and Platypus but none of the staff there is like the people here. Everyone talks to you, gets to know you, is incredibly friendly, and in the end is more like a friend than staff, which has created a great ...

Registration at Chamber of Commerce

For my visa, I have to register my activity at the Chamber of Commerce, and get some document from them saying that I have registered. Does anyone know how long this takes, and how difficult it is to do? I know a few people that have had to do it but I do not know of their results/success/failure. ...

Bogota to Barranquilla

Does anyone know anything about buses from Bogota to Barranquilla? How often do they run/do I just have to go from city to city connecting? Any estimated cost? I've taken night buses to Barracabermeja for about 30,000 pesos, so I'm guessing I might be able to catch a few buses totalling around 100,000 pesos roughly. Any advice on good bus lines, and cheap ones? Any info welcome. ...

Independent Photojournalism Visa

I am going to Colombia next summer to try to improve and grow my portfolio for photojournalism, of which I already have some shots of Colombia. I'll be staying for over 90 days anyways, and thus will need a visa. Also, the visa is the best way to get access to places I normally wouldn't and gives me legitimacy rather than a passport and a camera. Should I get a temporary visa or a work? I won't be working for anyone nor is the only goal work. If I do get paid at any point, it is will pretty luck ...

Medellin/Cali

Im looking for a cheap place to stay one night in Medellin because I have a flight out of there next week. Also, Ive been advised for Buenaventura that its cheaper and safer to stay in Cali and take the bus there each day. How long does the trip take by bus, and are there any good, safe and cheap places to stay in Cali? I have a couple weeks before i end up there but I will be in Choco, so any info now would help. Gracias, Kyle ...

Pasto to Tumaco

Hey, does anyone know anything about security on the road from Pasto to Tumaco? I know of a few people that have taken it without issue, but I have also heard of roadblocks on the road by some armed groups. Has anyone taken this road or know anything more solid about it? Any info is helpful.

Thanks ...

Visa for photography...

Hey, I'm a student who is going to travel to Colombia this summer hoping to do some photography, both of landscapes and hopefully journalistic type photography as well. This will be my third trip to Colombia but the first where I may require a visa. Because I am a student, I will have to finance the trip on my own and work independently, only to try to do something with the photos upon my return. I will only be there 45 days. On the Colombian Embassy's website, it looks like the best option for ...

From Pasto to Mocoa

Hey everybody! (Dr. Nick style) Does anyone know about the route between Pasto to Mocoa? I'm more fimiliar with the area closer to the border, but I do know this area is a hotbed for guerrilla violence and they have a strong presence here. Is there a bus that makes this route? Would it be better to just find a taxi driver willing to make the trip? Is it safe, or are there regular security issues on the road itself? I'm heading to Orito from Mocoa (where I've been before), so I'm wondering if i s ...

Hoteles en Buenaventura

Hola a todos y todas,

Busco informacion sobre hoteles en Buenaventura. Me ha dicho que hay hoteles cerca de la estacion de buses en la ciudad. No he podido confirmar este. Unicamente, busco info ...

Hotels in Buenaventura

Hey, are there any other hotels in Buenaventura besides hotel estacion? I don't have that kind of money, nor the desire, to really stay some place real nice. I've heard there are some decent cheap hotels near the bus station in Buenaventura. Is that true? (Please do not lecture e about the violence in the city, I am aware of its extent and the risks.) ...

Simple Question

How long can an American stay in Colombia just on the passport. I know to travel you don't need a visa there, but I plan on being there about 70 days, and doing some independent photography. Last year, I was able to manuever around saying the same thing with just my passport, citing that since I'm independent no one would sign for a visa. It does help I'm a gringo, but I've heard stuff about a stamp at the airport, and some people just ask for a 90 day stamp...Is this what I need to do? What are ...

Bus from Cali to Popayan & Cali to Buenaventura

Just wondering how safe the bus rides are. From Cali to Popayan is on the ol' Pan American, but still through some iffy territory. So I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this is a safe ride or not, though it seems safe. Secondly, Cali to Buenaventura, how safe is that? I know Buenaventura itself is one of, if not the, most violent city in Colombia, but how is the bus or a car ride to the city? Both of these seem like safe trips (safe being relative of course), but just looking for a stronger w ...

Travel to Bojaya

Hey, I'm a student/photographer looking to travel to Bojaya and I am wondering what is the best route. I've gotten conflicting responses from other people who I know who know Colombia. I know you can only reach there by boat, but where is the best place to launch from? How long will it take? With regards to safety, what is the safest (obviously relative) route? From what I see looking at the maps, a boat from outside Medellin may work best (if it exists), but I think a popular(ish) route would b ...

Electricity adapters and so on

Hey, does Colombia have the outlets similar to those in America, or does one need an adapter? Or yet another option, does it vary throughout the country? This is all, thanks.

Airlines in Colombia

I recently started to book my trip in Colombia from the States (what I can that is), and I found that Satena does not service Barranca, where I'll be, but does Bucaramanga. The key here is that after Barranca I'll be off to Arauca (Tame or Saravena, depending on security and my flight finding abilities). Does any other airline company service Arauca or only Satena? If so, is there a way I can find out if they service Barrancabermeja as well? I'd prefer to go to Tame, but Saravena is fine too (I ...

Temporal Visa

For my next trip to Colombia, I'm looking into getting a temporal visa. This way, I can travel to the country as a journalist, officially, instead of with just my passport and me saying that I'm a journalist. Does anyone know how long it would take, roughly, to get one of these visas? I get my newly renewed passport in, most likely, late ferbruary/early march. I will be freelancing, so this visa could prove important. Thank you. (I won't be traveling until mid august, possibly earlier). ...

Arauca...

Arauca seems to be the least talked about department of Colombia, probably because it is the least traveled to. The main reason has been the presence of guerrillas, both of the ELN and the FARC, and paracos, namely the Arauca Vanquishers Block (part of the AUC). I will be in Colombia later this year, mainly to do some research for some of my writings on the conflict (this is my second time to Colombia), and am looking to go to this heavily militarized area. There were two journalists kidnapped i ...

Booking a Flight with Satena

I'm traveling to Colombia later this year (2nd time going) and in order to fly to some of the cities I would like to visit (Tame), Satena seems to be the only company that flies there regularly. I understand the security situation in Arauca, but it will be a quick visit in order to try to better understand the situation there. Back to the question at hand; Satena has some software on their website (www.satena.com), but it could not help me with anything as it just had a window that said "Hello W ...
