ksmmcg comments on Brief travel guide to Cartagena Just back from Playa Blanca it was absolutely amazing but its changing quickly, the hostel la sirena with the website (http://www.playa-blanca.net) was actually knocked down about two weeks ago - there is another hostel there that has actual rooms in addition to hammocks but nothing luxurious by any means there are also a bunch of other tiny places along the beach that rent hammocks and tents where you just have to walk up and ask if they have space, definitely no reservations required....its one of the most beautiful places i've ever seen....

ksmmcg comments on Colombian Mentality this is kind of absurd - have you never been ripped off by an american company? or an american in general? i don't know about you, but i certainly have - these things happen everywhere - people are out to make a quick buck and sometimes you get screwed - thats life, read the small print...and i would definitely say that to argue that this is a colombian (insert any other nationality here) mentality is a complete over generalization

ksmmcg comments on bush in colombia? do you think being a gringa makes this any more unsafe? i'll be attending a class thats being taught by my boyfriend - he assures me that people won't necessarily know i'm a gringa at the U since there are so many foreign students - i'm not so sure but either way it doesn't sound like being in caught in the middle of one of these protests is such a good idea

ksmmcg comments on bush in colombia? while i appreciate the political debates.... the reason for my question is that i will also be in bogota this weekend - and i'll be at the national university on friday - i know that it is extremely common for the students to protest so i just want to prepare myself for what i'm getting myself into and to see if anyone knew if there would definitely be a protest - thanks any info/advice

ksmmcg comments on The Gateway to Colombia theres a jose cuervo mexican restaurant its in terminal D - i think - food is far from great but drinking and chatting with random people is always a great way to make a long layover pass by pretty quickly ... also a couple of the waiters there are colombianos..

ksmmcg comments on Daughter going to Cali she'll be fine... as long as she's street smart - i lived abroad when i was 15...she'll go though some culture shock, but people will take care of her. she just shouldn't do anything there that she wouldn't do here, i'm sure she's a smart girl and you raised her right so don't worry, honestly the hardest part might be for you and to see how she's changed when she gets back, ie reverse cultural shock - but the experience will be something that you and her will never forget ...best of luck to her! tell her to enjoy it as much as possible, it only happens once in a life time ......

ksmmcg comments on Safety in Bogota it depends i would say that you have to be street smart - i just got back from bogota and yes i was only there for about two weeks but i am also a female, and tall so i stand out but still with lighter hair and lighter eyes - but knowing spanish makes a difference but overall at night stick to the safe neighborhoods - during the day watch your back but probably the same as you would in any other big city like nyc - just be aware of your surroundings. also when you think about those deaths be realistic people are murdered in the US too (regardless of circumstance) - lets not just think of it in terms of colombia

ksmmcg comments on I am thrilled with Maria Full of Grace la sierra i agree that maria full of grace is a wonderful movie despite its cultural shortcomings but i would also HIGHLY recommend La Sierra - its a documentary filmed in colombia following three people involved in the ongoing civil war- in one neighborhood in particular - its absolutely amazing and all of you should see it - although i doubt it can be found at blockbuster

ksmmcg comments on just back from bogota! ok so maybe i didn't explain myself so well - i'm 25yo gringa, he's a 29yo rolo with an education we both are fluent in spanish and english - we've been together for six months, i met him when he was living & working in the US for the 3rd consecutive summer, he then lived with me for a month before returning to bogota when his work visa expired. i just went to visit him after missing him like crazy for 3 months - it was wonderful, everything was exactly the same between us, we were just in bogota opposed to nyc - we are completely and totally in love, i know he's right for me and i know want to marry him and i only want to get married once and only once, he feels the same way. i know some people say its too fast and all of that but all i can say is that when you know, you know. i'm completely sure about this. now at this point i just don't know how to get him here the fastest - work visa then apply for an AOS after getting married, get married in bogota and then apply for a K-3 visa or just apply for a K-1 visa? i need advice as to how to get him here so that we can be together any help would be great - thanks!

ksmmcg comments on any relationship advice? if you think he's wonderful - just trust it i fell in love with a colombian guy when he was in the US, he's absolutely wonderful, i know that and i don't question it, or at least i don't anymore. on this site people talk a lot about their experiences, some are great, some aren't so great, additionally i heard a lot from other people (my friends, my family) saying things like he just wants a visa and all that, but i know its not true. i know that he's perfect for me, and that i'm perfect for him - i'm going to meet his family tomorrow actually! i'm so excited....but anyway my point is don't let other people get in the way of something if you believe it to be right, trust your instincts. best of luck to both of you...
