kpennell comments on No need to cancel properly in colombia? Ok, what a great list of responses, I have to write this so its known... Well, Sunday came, I was confused, but I do have the skill of taking about 4 hours and then ya..I just kept laughing to myself and thinking, 'what a funny culture' 'what a funny girl' why wouldn't she just play sick or make up something and go out and have her normal fun night? I just kept thinking, wow, thats a first but oh well...and everybody has stories to confirm this aspect of latin culture. say alot of things...but don't do alot of things... Anyway, I worked at the same NGO as this girl and so I had to be around her the two days later. She came in...and I had just decided to pretend like nothing happened. A big group of us was watching non profit type movies (about other grameen bank) and then a note is handed to me. Hmmm....It said: I'm really sorry about Saturday night, my parents surprised me because they came to Bogotá from Melgar and I had no idea they were coming, and I accidently left me cell phone at another house, they wouldn't let me go out and I couldn't call you. (ok, so this is a pretty wierd circumstance, but understandable, she was leaving 6 days later to do a program in the states for a year.) Now me, I couldn't help but start smiling, it was such a relief, even though it was still a stupid thing of her to do to leave the cell...Anyway, I busted her chops about it for a while "some guy in Portland will be lucky to meet you....if you remember your cell!" Anyway, the point is, we went off to see a movie that day, had a good first kiss, realized how much we had in common, the conversation was natural, the pauses felt totally comfortable... So its not that happy of ending because now she's in the states, and I am leaving Colombia when she comes back, but she has become a good honest friend, and I will visit her there.... But...the moral of the story is to always have have a PLAN B with colombians ( I have one in portland where she lives, in case she flakes) ...yes...to always have a few plans ready, oh yeah...the other moral is to not assume that everyone who stands you up is a total bitch and isn't interested... Thats where I stand right now, and we shall see what'll happen...
