kikolina0920 comments on Mar Azul & San Luis hotels in San Andres

Been to both; they are both part of the Decameron chain. San Luis is more "popular", while Mar Azul is slightly more upscale. The other Decameron hotels on San Andres are: Aquarium, El Isleno (currently closed for accomodations due to renovations, but activities are still available), Los Delfines, Marazul, Maryland, and San Luis. I have found that the prices for rooms at the San Luis are more economical, but I prefer Marazul. Like Buongone said, you can enojy the amenities of all the Decamerons on the island with the bracelet that you are given on the day of your arrival. If accomodations are very important, then stay at the more upscale Marazul, but then again, how much time will you actually spend in your room on your vacation? Both are kinda far from San Andres shopping and nightlife, but you will have fun at whatever Decameron you decide to stay. San Andres is beautiful!!!!

kikolina0920 comments on Larges packages (por Navidad)

I forgot to mention; the cost per pound to send something to Colombia is around 1.69, but because of the holidays, there is a special of 1.25/lb. I sent a 22 lb. box on Sunday, and it cost $31.00! It will arrive in Medellin on Thursday, December 20th, right on time for Christmas! (8 working days)

kikolina0920 comments on Larges packages (por Navidad)

I live in the 'burbs in Jersey, and there is a HUUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEEE Colombian community here, so sending packages cheap to Colombia is not a problem. I sent a desktop computer 3 weeks ago to Medellin, and it cost $like $80.00, but it arrived in a matter of a week. No problems whatsoever with customs, and for the time it takes to get there, 80 bucks is a bargain!

kikolina0920 comments on Poblado - Best or Worst of Medellin?

It depends on your taste, definitely. I find El Poblado to be too far from everywhere, and things there to be too expensive for my wallet. For me, the only place is Laureles. That's because I have always worked there, that's where all my family and friends are, and the part of Medellin I feel most comfortable in. El Poblado is Estrato 6, while Laureles in Estrato 5 or 6, so if you're looking at apartments or accomodations, it is pretty much the same thing; upper middle-class dwellings. There has always been rivalry between the two, and most people who have lived in Laureles wouldn't be caught dead in El Poblado; people in El Poblado say the same about Laureles. I like the night life in El Parque Lleras, but the traffic on la Avenida del Poblado during the day is horrible. There is much accessability and ways to manuever around Laureles, while in El Poblado, the options are much less. Like I said at the beginning, it is a matter of taste.

kikolina0920 comments on Getting new cedula, passport, etc

AZALO I don't think that you can get by in Colombia without your Colombian paperwork, especially if you were born there. Warning; even if you are a nationalized US citizen, Colombian immigration will give you a hard time when entering the country, and also leaving it. (This happened to my sister the last time she went to Medellin a few months ago, prompting her to go to the Colombian consulate in Manhattan and getting her cedula (which takes all of a half hour). The consulate gives you a contrasena and tells you that the original cedula will be ready in a year. However, it is perfectly fine to travel with the contrasena (sorry, my laptop doesn't have an ~ symbol)and your passport. You can also get the passport at the Colombian consulate, and it takes no time at all either. You can travel with your US docs, but you will be hassled there. Good luck, and have a good trip.

Translator Hi there....I can help you out, if you want. I am Colombo-American, born and raised in the US, but have lived in Colombia for a long time, and completely bilingual, with a NYC accent in English, and totally paisa in Spanish. I am currently in Medellin, so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at lina_bedoya at yahoo.com for more information.

kikolina0920 comments on Cosmetic Surgery in Colombia

Plastic surgery Hey there, Gringo....I just had cosmetic surgery here in Colombia 2 weeks ago. I had a tummy tuck and a boob lift/implant. I am really happy with the initial results. Of course I have to wait until my stitches are removed, the bruising goes away, and the swelling goes down, but it looks really really good, according to everyone who has seen me. If you want my doctor's information, please send me an email to: kikolina0920 at myway.com and I will be happy to send you all of the info. Also, please advise what surgery you are specifically interested in.

kikolina0920 comments on Moving to KC (Kansas City) Where are the Colombians?

KS or MS? Are you moving to Kansas City, Kansas, or Kansas City, Missouri? If you are moving to Kansas, there is a restaurant called "Rincon Colombiano", and the address is: 611 North 6th Street, Kansas City, KS 66101. Tel: (913)281-3900.

If it's Missouri, you may be out of luck. I wasn't able to find out any information.

Good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on Teaching English in Bogota. US born son of Colombians

Cedula Hi Colombiano,

I had the same situation as you, made in Medellin, but born in the U.S. Once I registered as a child of Colombians, I went to the Registraduría in Itaguí, and got my cédula de ciudadanía. Once you have the cédula (you can go to the Consulate to get this done; it takes about 8 months to get the original in the mail, but you get a contraseña that you can travel to Colombia with in the meantime, and get your other paperwork with), you are pretty much set. As you are now considered a Colombian citizen, you need to have a passport to get into and out of Colombia. With your cedula de ciudadania, you are set. With it, you can vote, open up a bank account, etc.

Good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on Mompox (sp?), been there?

Mompox Yes, you spelled it correctly. The one and only time I went to Mompox was in 2000. It is isolated, and not as easy to get to as other places, but definitely worth the trip. We took our car, but eventually, you have to cross the river (I think it was the Magdalena, if I recall correctly) on a ferry. The ferry ride is about an hour long, and then, once you are over the river, it's not that far away. I thought it was a pretty place to visit, and if relaxation is what you're looking for, you'll find it there. It is a hot spot for tourists, but mostly during Semana Santa, really. It has a lot of churches, and if memory serves me correctly, I think Simon Bolivar was there on a few occasions back in the day. The hotels are small, clean and very affordable. The center of town is very picturesque and there are maybe one or two really good restaurants. I liked it there a lot, and hope to go back someday. If you go, you absolutely must try the cheese!!! It is out of this world...don't go crazy, though...it tends to mess with your system. The people are nice, they seem to like the tourists. One thing though; Mompox is HOT!!!!! Make sure you get a hotel with air conditioning.

Good luck and have fun!!!!

kikolina0920 comments on Search: Finca near Medellin

Fincas There are many different towns around Medellin with all different categories of fincas. Guarne is on the Autopista Medellín-Bogotá, and has a temperate climate, although it can get quite chilly at night, and if it's a rainy day, you will definitely want to have a sweater with you. Guarne is 40 minutes from Medellín, an easy drive, very accessible, and the highway is good. Copacabana is actually considered part of the Metropolitan area of Medellín, and is north of the city. It too has a temperate climate, and on a personal note, is my favorite place on Earth...lots of great fincas, nice veredas, and is a stone's throw from the city. You can take a bus, a colectivo, even the Metro to get there. If you want to start research on the different towns, and what they have to offer, I would suggest you start with lopaisa.com. For fincas in specific towns, you can take a look at the classifieds on elcolombiano.com, or there is a good page called: espacios-ltda.com.

Good luck, and if you decide to buy in Copa, let me know!!!!!

kikolina0920 comments on Bariatric surgery, gastric bypass

A big city Rob:
First of all, I wish you the best of luck with your gastric bypass surgery, wherever you decide to it. I had mine a year and a half ago, and I have never been so happy. I have lost a total of 160 lbs. so far, and I have 20 pounds left to go. I thought that my goal of fitting into a size 16 pair of designer jeans was an impossible one when I started, but now, I have surpassed that dream, as I can easily fit into a 14 and sometimes even a size 12. It is amazing!!!!! If you have any questions about the surgery, or want some post-operative advice or help, I will be more than happy to help you in any way I can.

I am leaving for Medellin on Tuesday to have some consultations with plastic surgeons because now that I have lost the weight, I have all of this extra skin that I want to get rid of....I can't wait!!

Anyway, wherever you decide to do the surgery, please consider having it in a large city such as Bogotá or Medellín. Cartagena is a well-known city, but it's renowned for its tourism, and not its medical advances. All I know that I had my surgery by the BEST medical team in the state of New Jersey, and I really did my research first.

Unfotunately, I don't know of any surgeons in either Bogotá or Medellín who specialize in this surgery, but I'm sure once you get there, it'll be easier for you to do your research before making any decisions.

Once again, I wish you the best of luck, and really, if you have any questions, I would be happy to help you in any way I can.

Take care and God bless....

kikolina0920 comments on Help (shoe size)

Shoes My Colombiano wears a size 42 shoe, and when I buy him shoes in the U.S. to take him as a gift, I always get a size 11. That being said, a size 40 is usually a 10 for men. I wear a size 39 in Colombia, and here I am a size 9.

kikolina0920 comments on Colombia: Cartagena or Santa Marta?

Cartagena Tu Candela Bar is a fun place on Friday and Saturday nights if you are downstairs, but during weeknights, or even on a Sunday, it is packed with skanky chicas prepago...didn't like it so much then....

Anyway, for a totally different but extremely cool experience, you might want to try Café del Mar, which is also inside La Ciudad Amurallada.....it is beautiful, the music is so cool, and very laid back and relaxed.

I was in Cartagena last week, and I LOVED it; lots to see and do.

I haven't been to Sta Marta in a while, but I also love it. For me it doesn't matter, as long as there is an ocean nearby, I am a happy girl!!!

Colombian Passport I am not sure of the amount that you will have to pay, but I can tell you one thing; if your husband was born in Colombia, and you are traveling there, he will absolutely need a Colombian passport!!! Very easy to get....go to the colombian consulate, have him take his original cedula de ciudadania, and two photocopies, 3 recent passport photos, and $98.00. Takes about an hour, but it is necessary.

Good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on Cost of Private Schools In Medellin

Colegios I don't have any kids yet, but my bestfriend's daughter is 5 years old, and is very happy studying in el Jesus Maria, which is an all-girls school in por el Estadio. The quality of education there is very high, and from what my friend tells me, the price is very favorable. They are a regular middle-class family with an apartment in Laureles, and one car. They don't live without anything, and don't have an excessive spending habit, and they are very happy with the school. If you have any questions, please PM me, and I can get you more information, if you need it. Good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on Cedula or Visa?

Cedula As an American born to a Colombian father, you, by birth, have the right to Colombian citizenship. As far as I know, you have to register at the Notaria Primera en Bogotá, and I believe that your father has to prove that he is a Colombian citizen. Once you are registered at the Notaria Primera, you use your registro civil to get your colombian cedula - this can be done at any Colombian consulate or embassy.

Absolutely get the cedula, and while you're at it, get the colombian passport too. It can't hurt.

Also, it is a bigger hassle if you plan to live in Colombia and you don't have your papeles. To get an extension on your visa is difficult, as the DAS is reticent to do this.

If you have any questions, PM me.

Good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on Donde estan las olas buenas?

Buena suerte!!!!!

kikolina0920 comments on Taking my kids to see the "Old Country"

Get the Colombian passport Stamper:

Save yourself a lot of trouble!!! This happened to my sister a few weeks ago...she was born in Medellin, and came to this country when she was 13....she became a U.S. citizen more than 10 years ago...anyway, to make a long story short, the DAS treated her very badly when she tried to leave Colombia. They didn't make her pay any money, or anything, but they pretty much told her that the next time she goes to Colombia, she better go as a Colombian, or they wouldn't let her in. I have no idea why they are doing this, but I have heard the same story recently now from several different people...I don't know where you live, but if the closest Colombian consulate for you is in New York City, in order for you to get a passport, you have to appear in person, take 3 copies of a recent photo, measuring 2.5x1.5 inches, facing forward, with a white background...You need to have your original cedula de ciudadania with you, and or your old passport, two photocopies of them, and $98.00 USD in order to get the passport. The website for the consulate in NYC is www.consuladodecolombiaennewyork.com...Good luck! Save yourself some trouble, and get the passport....

kikolina0920 comments on Construction terms

Obra negra means that a construction that is being planned. If you buy an "obra negra" property , you get a better deal, because the architectural firm is still trying to sell the properties, and you can make modifications to your liking. There isn't much you can do once the apartment is built.

Obra gris is once the construction has actually begun. The prices can be pretty favorable, as in obra negra, and you might be able to make changes.

Overall, buying in obra negra or obra gris is a good deal for the end-user (a.k.a. YOU).

Good luck!!!

San Andres Try Avianca, and ask for Plan Deskubra, it's all-inclusive, and for 5 nights, I just bought a package to stay at el Decameron San Luis from September 23-28 for $364.00, EVERYTHING included - airfare, hotel accomodations, all taxes, tips, transfers from the airport to your hotel and back again, and everything you can eat and drink. If you fly out of Cartagena with Avianca, they fly you first to Bogotá, and then out to San Andres....check it out!!!

kikolina0920 comments on Medellin

Laureles is very central, while very nice, upper middle-class neighborhood, close to everything. It is more expensive than a lot of the other neighborhoods, but well worth the money. Santa Teresita, or La Castellana, are very close to major avenues, such as La Avenida Jardin, La 33, y La Avenida Nutibara....check out elcolombiano.com and look in the classifieds section for apartment rentals....good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on 3 Questions for the Medellin experts.

COLECTIVO TRANSPORTATION FROM RIONEGRO TO MEDELLIN There is a "colectivo" service from the airport (José María Córdoba) to el Hotel Nutibara (en el Centro). The first one leaves the airport at 6:30am, and I believe they make runs up until 7 or 8pm. I know the trip is a lot cheaper than a taxi - a taxi is about 35,000 or 40,000 pesos - around $15,000. You might want to try calling El Hotel Nutibara for more information on the colectivo, which is like a mini-bus....Good luck!

kikolina0920 comments on can i be a Colombian citizen

CITIZENSHIP I was also born in the U.S. to two Colombian citizens, and, as in your case, when I turned 21, my parents decided to move back to Medellin. The rules I believe are still the same. You have to go to La Notaría Primera de Bogotá, with both of your parents and your U.S. birth certificate. Your parents must have their cédulas, and your birth certificate must be translated into Spanish by an official translator, as well as be notarized and authenticated (at the notaria, they will give you a sheet of accepted official translators, and the certificate can be notarized there.). Then, you are registered in the "folios" as a Colombian, and they will give you a registro de nacimiento. When you have your "registro", you have to use that in order to get your cédula. Once you are issued your cédula de ciudadanía, you can basically use that for everything, as well as voting, buying a house (you do not have to be a Colombian citizen to do that), or go to college (which you also don't need citizenship in order to be able to attend). However, you will find some difficulty in getting admitted into a Colombian college if you do not have your ICFES exam scores (somewhat similar to the U.S. SAT tests in high school). When I was a sophomore in college in the U.S., I went to Medellín for summer vacation, and because we know people, I was given an interview with the Dean of the Law School at the University of Medellín. Because of our connection, I was a show-in, no problem. However, when the Dean asked me about my ICFES scores, and I said I didn't have them, she said that without them, I would not be able to get into any undergrad program. Since I didn't go to high school in Colombia, I would have to take a lot of high school courses to get acquainted with the questions on the exams in order to have any hopes of passing. Since I didn't want to do that, and since a lot of the credits that I already had from the U.S. weren't going to be accepted by the Universidad de Medellín, I decided to finish my studies here, and do any post-graduate studies there. IF YOU ARE A CHILD OF COLOMBIAN CITIZENS, YOU TOO ARE COLOMBIAN......

kikolina0920 comments on Good cable service or satellite disk in Colombia

Television cable service depends from city to city. When I lived in Medellin, I found it very easy to watch American shows, as I had cable through Empresas Publicas de Medellin. My favorite channel was the Sony Channel, where they showed most of the important current U.S. shows. DirectTV is good, as well as SKY TV. Check it out once you get there. Good luck!
