JT comments on Certificado de Solteria? All US documents given to the Colombian notary All the US documents that I needed to give the US Notary who married my wife and I needed the Apostille. So I had this notarized then sent to the State Dept. to get the Apostille.

JT comments on What happens at Miami w/ CR-1 visa? So sorry to hear about all that trouble bbattiste. Just when you should all be relaxed and celebrating, all that happens. We also didnt want to spend Christmas in Bogota nor fly back to get the visa on the following tuesday 27th, so we notarized a letter giving permission to someone to pick it up for us. Then they sent it with Deprisa overnight to Cartagena. Worked out great. I won't be travelling with her when she enters the US, so I hope the CBP officer speaks spanish.
JT comments on Forms in English I've heard that either English or Spanish will be fine. I believe there is more room to write in the English version though.

JT comments on DS-156 Where to get it? I paid the two fees to the NVC. Was that what they were for? That was back in June so I dont remember exactly. That would be great if what the Packet 4 instructions are saying, that we pay $380 at the embassy has already been fulfilled. I'm gonna look for the fee notices when i get home.
JT comments on DS-156 Where to get it? I did more reading on the embassy site and it explains that we pay $380 at the embassy. It mentions the $100 at the bank for K-1 visas. But ours is CR-1.
JT comments on DS-156 Where to get it? why pay the DS-156 AND the $380 USD? My wifes packet 4 from the Embassy states to bring $380 US to the interview in cash or credit. So this is different than paying the DS-156 fee for the interview? Or is there a difference between interviews for K-1 and my CR-1 case? -jt

JT comments on Location of Lab and Dra. Consuelo? DAS document in English? Thank goodness for the post by flaleo, because I almost forgot that my wife needs to get her DAS criminal record before her medical exam. She is having the exam done a few weeks before our interview. I'm assuming it needs to be translated to English correct? Should be pretty easy to translate it since it'll be blank.(i hope.... maybe there are some things she hasn't told me about jaja)
JT comments on Location of Lab and Dra. Consuelo? Can she pay the fee a month before the interview? Does it matter when the DS-156 fee is paid? We can pay it now right? Even though our interview is in late Dec? That way we wouldnt have to make sure to get to the bank early, but just pay anytime the bank is open? Thanks!
JT comments on Location of Lab and Dra. Consuelo? this trip just for Med exam/Lab My Cartagenera wife doesn't know her way around Bogota. I hope that there wont be any trouble with the Taxi drivers finding the addresses of Dra. Consuelo's and the Lab. I will check out that site with the maps. I have been looking for a mapquest.com like site for Bogota for a long time. Even though the interview isnt until late December, I thought that staying near the embassy wouldn't be a bad idea. I have a question about the FEE that needs to be paid at the Bank? That is for the embassy interview right? At what point do you pay exactly? Thanks! -jt

JT comments on Location of Lab and Dra. Consuelo? Are the Lab and Dra. Consuelos office close to Embassy? Thanks silvia for letting me know that the lab and the Dra. Consuelos office are close to eachother. But are they near the Embassy as well? Thanks! -jt

JT comments on Picking Up Visa at Embassy Thats a pain Why is it that my wife can't send someone else to pick up her immigrant visa?? If that's so, then we'll have to spend Christmas weekend in Bogota while the family is in Cartagena. I know she'd love to be with her family since she is leaving them.
JT comments on Change interview date possible? I called the Visa Info Call Center I called the Visa info call center and they charged my credit card for 11 minutes of call time. I was told that I could let the interview date go by and that the embassy would give another interview date within "approximately 60 days". Or, if my wife hadn't received the Packet 4, but did see her appointment listed online, then the embassy would reschedule the appointment when we contacted them. Or, I could mail a letter explaining that my wife can't make the interview on that date and request a later date. I suppose in the letter I could mention the date that I desired, but I'm sure it wont be gauranteed.
No date for interview until Priority date? Got letter from NVC stating that our file forwarded to Bogota, but still missing papers. Requesting that my wife bring the missing tax forms to interview in Bogota. Kinda makes me nervous to think that its not all in order and we have to wait until the interview to see if we have all the papers to thier satisfaction. Would like to know if its smart to not wait 3 weeks to see if the packet comes or not, and just send someone now to pick it up at the embassy? Also, refresh my memory, what is the DS-230 form again? Thanks! -jt

JT comments on Question about Visa Packets. K-3 Maiden name or married name on visa? When my wife has her interview at the Embassy in bogota, does it matter that her Passport has her maiden name? Does she have to get a new passport and Cedula with her new married name?
JT comments on Question about Visa Packets. K-3 I'm sorry, I don't know why i put k-3 as part of the title. Our I-130 was approved very quickly so we don't have anything to do with the k-3

JT comments on I-129F, bringing spouse to US I-130 approved in only 3 weeks!!!!!!! Holy Arepas!!!!! I can't believe that today our I-130 case for my wife of less than 2 months was approved today!!! I sent the petition to Nebraska Service Center. They are currently working on I-130's from November,2003. I was ready to file a I-129F to get a K-3 visa. But then they forwarded it to the California Center which is a year ahead and working on Nov, 2004 petitions. So I wasn't gonna waste money on the I-129F. I'm just blown away that today I got an email update the our case was approved!!!!!!!!! Anyone else had this experience lately? What a miracle! I know that our prayers were heard.
JT comments on I-129F, bringing spouse to US Should I file I-129F ? Looking at the processing times for the California Service Center, it doesn't show the K-3 Visa for the I-129F (only the K-1 and K-2).
JT comments on I-129F, bringing spouse to US It its looking like the California service center will process the I-130 in less time than the I-129F, then that means that my wife would get her interview the the Colombian embassy in a shorter time, and at the embassy, she will recieve her residency? or visa? And is there a window of time when she would have to enter the US?

JT comments on Marriage visa update I had to get one for December '04 I got a special 'marriage visa' from the COlombian consulate in Chicago in October for my December wedding in Cartagena. If its true that the marriage visas aren't necessary, thats cool, because it was a pain in the butt to get the paper work from different states and notarized, then the spanish translations notarized, then all these Apostilled, only to have to get them re-translated in Cartagena, which turned out to be worse than my translations.

-JT

JT comments on Marriage adventure. I thankfully have mine I'm so glad that I was able to get my marriage visa at the Chicago Consulate without any problems. The consul was telling how they try to treat us good because in Colombia, the US embassy doesn't. Don't get too discourage guys! Good luck!

JT comments on Help w/ Translation I am actually asking for.... If anyone has a copy of this type of statement in Spanish, I'd love to see the wording. I just was hoping that some of you who have had this statement attached to your spanish translations, could share that with me. Thanks

JT comments on Marriage adventure status From your experience.... Utopiacowboy, its nice having your optomistic posts! I sure don't think I want to wait 2 years for my future wife to get her visa.

JT comments on Marriage adventure status Waiting period? Dan, did any of the three notarys mention that there would be a waiting period after filing your documents before you could get married? Thanks!

JT comments on If you are getting married in Col., read this! Response to Yag I went to the local police dept. They can just print out a document with a stamped signature of the Department head. But I knew it needed to be notarized so I went back, had them print out a new one, had the records dept. supervisor sign it and they had a notary there so it was notarized too. He was hesitant to sign the spanish translation of it that I made since he couldn't read it. I called the Chicago consulate and told them that the police didnt want to notarize the spanish copy. The consulate said that its ok, just bring the english version w/ the Apostille. My question is whether he will require a spanish version w/ Apostille or not. I'm going to get the spanish translation notarized and Apostilled just to be safe. I had the same question: Who notarized the spanish translations? I was wondering if the town/county clerk had to stamp and certify the spanish translation of my birth certificate, and if the Police Dept. needed to notarized the spanish translation of my Police Report. No matter how many times I asked this, none of the responses from people on this site clearly told me what to do. They would just say, get the spanish translation notarized. But by who?????

JT comments on Colombian Traditions Ask them before you propose if you can My fiancee's mom and family live in Cartagena, but her Father lives/works in New Jersey. And my girlfriend didn't tell her dad about me untill we were engaged. She knew he was kinda jealous of his daughters and thought he would be opposed to her and I being together. Anyway, when she did tell him, he was very cool, and the whole family was surprised that he wasn't threatening my life. Well, he did however tell me not to touch his daughter within the first 2 minutes of our 1st conversation.

JT comments on If you are getting married in Col., read this! Thanks to everyone Daver, yeah, those types of experiences would overshadow a lot of good experiences for me too. I wanted to say thanks for answering my questions. Although it may look like I know a lot about how to go about the translation thing, I'm really not sure what will fly with the Notary, so I'm asking all of you all about your personal experiences. The Notary hasn't been answering the phone, and my fiancee has been too busy in Med School to stop by her office lately. But you're right, the best thing is to check with the Notary in Cartagena, and ask the Chicago Consulate to recommend a translator in the area. Thanks again!

JT comments on How did you translate Birth Certificate for Marriage Visa? Do Oficial translators exist in USA? When people say they found an Oficial Translator, do they mean a Professional Translator? Because I'm not aware that the US government certifies translators?????

JT comments on If you are getting married in Col., read this! Question for Patrick or Non-Canadian Im in the US and so we do need the Apostille. Patrick, it seems are are saying that the Spanish translation of my birth certificate doesn't need the Apostille, but only to be notarized? All the instructions say that all the Spanish translations need to have the Apostille. But then again,I do see how the State Dept. might think its wierd that they are giving an Apostille for a Spanish translation of the Apostille.

JT comments on How did you translate Birth Certificate for Marriage Visa? Ask your consulate if local police record is good enough. The chicago consulate told me that my police record could be from anywhere. I've only lived here a year. But I went to the local police dept. Went to the "records dept". Payed $7.00 and had the police report. The one they gave me had a stamp instead of a real signature of the head of the records dept. So I had them give me another with a real signature, and asked them to notarize it. They found a notary there who notarized it. I had made a spanish copy of the record, but they woulnd't sign and notarize it. The consulate told me it didnt matter, just get the Apostille on the English copy. Now I have to call the consulate again and ask if he wants me to get the spanish translation notarized and apostilled.
JT comments on If you are getting married in Col., read this! But does the notarized spanish translation need Apostille? Get the original Birth cert. an Apostille - Got it! Does the Apostille need to be translated? Or just the Birth Cert? And then does that notarized spanish translation need an Apostille? Can I translated the Birth Cert. myself and sign the translation before a notary? I dont know how many times I've asked these questions, but no one seems to be able to answer all of them. Thanks! I appreciate any info you can provide!

JT comments on Colombian (Latin American): cheat, faithful, etc.? It seems like cheating is more widespread I'm not sure why, but it seems that the average Colombian man is more likely to cheat than the average North American. Or maybe it just seems that way becuase of how open Colombian men are when they show how much they love women, other women, even when they have one.

JT comments on How did you translate Birth Certificate for Marriage Visa? 2retirensa, The County Clerk acts as the notary I got my birth certificate issued from the town clerk where I was born in New York State. It needs to get certified by the County Clerk. Then, I send it to the NY State Dept. for the Apostille. Thats all I had to do.

JT comments on CARTAGENA, Rosario I.: Media Naranja Island Its a good day trip It was a great day trip, including a trip to the aquarium. I don't know how nice the overnight accomodations are. But Cocolisco is really nice for an overnight stay. Cocolisco does NOT have a nice beach like media naranja, as you can't take a step without stepping on sharp rocks. My feet were hurt after a few hours in the water. But there is a pool there which is nice.

JT comments on Yes, you can marry in Colombia on a student visa Waiting period before marriage I had read someones post on this site that there was a 5 day waiting period to get married. I'm assuming they meant that after filing the necessary paperwork w/ the notary, then wait 5 days.

JT comments on Engagement Rings We noticed that too When I proposed to my fiancee, I put the ring on her left hand like we do in the US. She herself wasnt sure which hand it went on, and as we looked at other womens hands, we saw that most didnt have any ring, and the ones that did had the ring on the right hand. But she is keeping hers on her left hand. My fiancee mentioned (and is expecting) a wedding band as well in december. But its really up to what you and your fiancee want. Talk to her about it.

JT comments on Is there anything like Mapquest.com for Bogota??? The consulate said... When I called the Colombian Consulate in Chicago, the guy said that the translation didnt have to be by any certain person, it just had to be a good translation.

JT comments on Wedding in Medellin... need help Daver or anyone, who did your document translations? I am getting my paperwork in order and will be getting married in December in Cartagena. Just wanted to know who is doing your translation work? How much? The Chicago Consulates office told me over the phone that the translation didnt have to be done by anyone specific, and just had to be a good translation. I could do an ok job myself, but if its not expensive I'll leave it to the professionals. Thanks! -JT

JT comments on Cheapest way to get documents translated into Spanish? How did everyone do there translations of birth Certificate? I'm not sure if I want to pay for a translation I think I can handle. But I'm sure that the translation of my birth certificate, and criminal record could be done better by professionals.

JT comments on Marriage 12/21 in Colombia HELP! American marrying in Colombia My main concern isn't about the birth certificate. The requirements state that the birth cert. needs to be issued no more than 3 months prior to the wedding date (in my case, I can't have it notarized until Sept 21).
