John Milton comments on PBH Marriage Posts

RJ- Sorry to hear about your situation. I don’t post on here too much but I do read a lot of the posts here and often agreed with your line of thinking. I hope this all works out for you but just make sure it is what you want. I am sure you married her believing she was the one for you and you might want to reflect on that. I don’t know what happened and maybe there is no going back but just make that the bridge is actually burned. I always viewed your love story success and maybe for my own sanity I wanted it to be for you. Maybe what you married is still there and is just covered up by whatever circumstances brought you to this. If I am completely off base here I apologize and like others here would say always remember cooler minds prevail. Best wishes to you and if she turns out not to be the one then you are just one more closer to finding her.

John Milton comments on Are Ingrid Betancourt and the Three Americans Free

Sanandressi- The cause of the gringos' plane crash was due to engine stress. Yes there was bullet holes in the craft but many of which were put there by the FARC after the crash. Only a few bullets hit the plane while it was still in the air and coming down for the emergency landing. The FARC shot at the plan as it was crashing and then shot it up some more upon their arrival to the scene. Of course this just trivial point now since finally Mark, Tom, and Keith are coming home. This is a great day, one I have waited for so long to come.

John Milton comments on Colombian's life not worth much in the US

When you choose to be a robber you do so assuming the risk of getting shot by the police, the home owner, or some vigilante. Call it hazards of the field. Maybe Mr Horn used excessive force but he would never had been in a position to make a questionable decision had these two men made better choices. They choose to break and enter and when confronted they choose to flee. All they had to do was get one right and they would still be here today. The responsibility of their deaths is their own because Mr Horn would never had shot them if they would have choose to be law abiding guests of this country and spent their night doing something other than robbing. Mr Horn however did seemed to be an eager beaver to pull the trigger, I would assume he was aiming to do more than impede their escape all along. That is a little scary. I relate to this story because when I was a child we had a cat burglar in the area and where we lived the police were 20mins away at best. Sure you called the police and they made their best effort to get there in time to fill out the report. There was two incidents within a month; the first is when my neighbor’s kid was home alone and somebody broke in the house. He called the Police and then my father. My father grabbed his gun and wentto the home to only find a kicked in door but no robber. A few weeks later I was home alone and somebody was on our property flashing a light inside the windows. I called my Dad who was at the bar (looking back that could have been a bad first call on my part) and he came home to find the man in our yard. My father pulled a weapon and asked to man to stay still, instead he bolted and my father shot three rounds at him. He missed all three times whether due to the darkness or the beer but after that we never had an incident in our community again. My point is the threat of getting shot stopped this guy from acting again in that community. How many times have people on this board complained about criminal activity happening in broad daylight and nobody comes to the victims’ aid? I am not for a vigilante state but I do like the seed being planted in the minds of the criminals of a chance a Mr Horn is nearby and will kill you for your actions. Right or wrong the threat of death is a good deterrent to would be thieves

John Milton comments on U.S. families hopeful of Colombia hostages release

pbthekid, sorry I was replying back to you and vlad and should have seperated the replies. You make a valid point about about your friend who was an E-9. A lot of the information on what plane they were flying and details of the crash can be found in the FAA report if you have the time to go through a long research process. The five man crew consisted of two pilots, 2 analysts for mapping and a Colombian who was there as an observer. They were supporting sprayers but not actually spraying. Direct or indirect is still involvement so as was earlier pointed out they were not the innocent gringo tourist. I know most would like to believe more and that is how the Escober special forces/CIA thing gets fueled. For the families (and not just the gringos' families) I would like to see proof of like on more regular basis than every five years. Maybe you can't let the Red Cross in for fear of giving up your location but if you have a website and radio station then you can put out some info there on their status to at least provide a little hope.

Mr. Hollywood you are absolutely right and I agree with your points.

It is sad to see five years has passed and these guys are still captive. Pbthekid, these guys were not spraying chemicals. If you watch the video with the reporter that was made their first year in captivity you will hear what they did. Their company Northop Grumman is not like Blackwater and the only role they serve is indirect support. Whether you agree with the current process of coco eradication or not is one thing but those wishing hostages should be killed seems a bit harsh.

John Milton comments on More Crap about Colombia on CNN

I would agree with GIB on this drug. I was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Bogota twice while in the military and it was the danger of this drug that they warned us about the most, not the other negative stuff that the media sometimes ignorantly spews. Now I would say this video of course makes it seem like everyone is getting “scoped which only continues misguiding people about what Colombia really is like and that is a shame. Still, I will say that I knew a gringo that got scoped because he was keeping company with hookers at a bar he was not supposed to be at. From what he remembers he spent the rest of the weekend in a cage naked and being mocked. They stripped him of his money and dumped him off naked somewhere to work on his tan while he tried to find his way home. The drug is strong and very dangerous, but if you want to better your chances of not getting some hands on experience with it don’t put yourself in a bad situation i.e. don’t chill with prostitutes, especially when you can’t speak Spanish. Of course a cab driver can always turn around and blow it in your face and the next thing you know you’re are going on that million dollar taxi ride from ATM to ATM instead of drinking some cold ones. The drug is dangerous, Bogota however is just like any other city when it comes to danger, the danger is directly proportionate to ones own stupidity barring just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

John Milton comments on Actual telephone knowledge

Nicadj, The last time I went to Colombia I took my vonage phone and it worked fine. My friends and family in the States said it sounded crystal clear when we talked. Currently my extended family in Colombia uses a vonage to call me. As for skype, I had problems with it. Plus the cost of Vonage is so cheap. I hope that helps.
