jjhill comments on Colombia safety guide has anyone volunteered in bogota for human rights organizations? I have been to Colombia twice; once on a human rights delegation where we met with different grassroots organizations that help displaced people in the cities. they help "peace communities" meaning those communities who do not support any armed group, the guerrillas, paramilitaries, or the army. i now have the opportunity for a couple weeks this summer to work with kids, etc. through a couple of these organizations but now since i will go alone and not with the protection of a delegation, i'm a liitle worried. has anyone done such work?

jjhill comments on Drug guide Social conscience ok, here's my preachy request. Don't buy cocaine. If you must do a drug, do something else. Americans and Europeans buying coke is just fueling the 50 year old colombian civil war and keeping the guerrillas and paramilitaries very well funded. These illegal armed groups commit torture, massacres, rapes, and violent displacement to gain contol of land to grow, yep, you know what, coca, to then produce cocaine.

jjhill comments on Colombia safety guide don't forget about the paramilitaries While you need to be careful of the guerrillas, don't forget about the right-wing illegal militia, the paramilitaries, or "paras". The paramilitaries work hand in hand with corrupt sectors of the Colombian army and gov't. They have committed horrible human rights atrocities, mostly to their own people, but foreigners need to be aware of them as well. They are all over - both in rural areas and cities.

jjhill comments on Will flying from city to city keep you safe from the big bad guerrilla? Dude, relax I don't think Platano is a guerrilla supporter. Guerrillas, paramilitaries, and even certain brigades of the Colombian Army have committed unthinkable, horrible atrocities. However, you have to remember that many of these armed groups are filled with very young, often child soldiers. They are human beings who sadly, have been de-humanized and trained to kill. Many join the guerrillas or paramilitaries either by force, or for lack of any other opportunity. Some join to get a plate of food and a family. There are huge economic disparities in the country and racial and social inequalities.
