Changing money in Capurgana

I am arriving from Panama to Capurgana and am wondering what the most effective way to get my hands on some pesos given that there are no ATMs in Capurgana. Would people accept US$$?? Are there casas de cambio? Decent rate? or would it be wise to change dollars to Pesos in Panama City before I go? Any other suggestions for what a fairly adventurous, athletic solo guy can do for a week in the Capurgana area are also appreciated. Thanks, Jesse ...

Capurgana to Cartagena

I am coming from Panama via Puerto Obardia to Capurgana, and eventually to Cartagena. I have the logistics worked out thanks to previous posts, but have a few further questions: 1. Is the bus from Turbo to Cartagena still considered safe? Safe enough to consider an overnight bus? 2. Any suggestions of things to do for a week in the general Capurgana area? 3. Is the pacific coast worth visiting if I chose to skip a repeat visit to Cartagena? Is it accessible from Caprgana/Tur ...

An entertaining and insightful blog about Colombia www.adayincolombia.wordpress.com

I lived in Medellin for about a year and a half and recently just revisited Colombia after 2 years of being back in the States. I wrote a slightly informative, slightly humorous account of my adventures and experiences with Colombian culture. If anyone is interested or wants to fill some internet time check me out at www.adayincolombia.wordpress.com ...

Crossing the Venezuelan border by bus

I am looking to get from Medellin to Merida, Venezuela and am curious if a bus can safely get me there. Anyone know what the scene at the Cucuta border is like. I am an experienced and confident traveler with near fluent, yet accented spanish, but definitely stand out as a gringo. Suggestions??? Hours of travel and cost?? ...

Marrying a Colombian for a visa extension

I am trying to overstay my 6 month tourist visa for two months in the cheapest and most painless manner. . .the suggestions I have got from Colombians is that the easiest way to win myself more time here without having a work contract and a legitimate work visa, a student visa or a medical visa is to marry a colombiana. I have a colombian girlfriend who has offered to do me the favor, but we are not in love or at a point where marriage would be what either of us want. It would be a sham marri ...

overstaying a tourist visa

I have decided to overstay my 6 month tourist visa and pay the fine. . .I heard it ranged from half the minimum salary to 6 times te minimum. . does this sound right? Anything I can do to ensure or at least help it be half?

Given I am going to be here semi-illegally after october 13th, is it possible to leave the country to go to Ecuador? My assumption is that if I leave the country after I my tourist visa has expired they will not let me back in. . .correct?

Is the ...

Colombian tourist visa extension past 6 months/ Student Visa

I am an American living and working in Medellin and am trying to find a way to stay through December though my tourist visa and all extensions run out in mid-October. Is there any way to get a further extension? What is the price of overstaying your visa by 2 months? Can I leave to Panama or Ecuador for 3 days and be entitled to another 60 days?

Also, I have considered taking a class or two at EAFIT University....is it possible to easily obtain a short term student visa? Wou ...

Santa Marta tourism with the slightly nervous parents

I am a 26-year old American teaching English in Medellin, but am having my parents come visit me for a 10 day period with hopes of 3-4 days in the Santa Marta surrounding area. Does anyone have any good suggestions for beautiful beaches or nature hikes in that area that won't be particularly expensive and more importantly dangerous for a family of obvious Gringos? We had discussed maybe renting a car to give us more flexibility. . . more or less dangerous than the buses? Also, if anyone has a ...
