jarhead comments on Free Trade Agreement not likely

I was at the Camara de Comercio at Corferias the other day, iquiring about "plan Vallejo" for my company, and I got into a conversation with one of the "advisors" there, she was commenting how bummed she was that the aproval of the FTA had be delayed yada, yada, yada....and I commented to her that the best thing that can happen to Colombia in the short term is for the FTA not to be approved, considering that 90% of Colombian products get into the U.S. without paying any taxes, or tariffs, I went on to explain to her how, in my view, Colombia is in no way, shape, or form prepared to compete with the U.S. commercially, and will not be prepared for god knows how long, needless to say, she feels that the FTA is a godsend for Colombia, how is this so????I just don't see it....the FTA is a win, win situation for the U.S., not Colombia............

jarhead comments on Colombian holidays

I wonder how this whole holiday thing will play out once the FTA is signed, the Colombian tariff barriers disapear, and U.S. goods start to legally pour into this country, I wonder how Colombian companies are going to react?????? what will they do, when they find out they cannot compete, price wise with imported goods, because while the rest of the industrialized world is busy working away creating wealth, we here are laying by the pool at our fincas every other weekend...we'll see how all this plays out...if it plays out....

jarhead comments on Colombian Exports soared 48.8%

Most of that increase, if not all of it has to do with the soaring prices of oil, and oil derived products...... exports not related to oil, minerals, coffee, and a few other "basic" traditional items, are flat, or are "in the toilet" sort of speak.......there have been over 18,000 jobs lost in the flower industry alone, not to count the other thousands of jobs lost in other "non traditional" industries.....Simon, I wonder if you know how many people are directly affected by the loss of just one descent paying job here in Colombia???????......way to go Colombia....the strong peso is having dire consequenses in certain sectors of the economy here, but this is something the Dane, and the "goons" who run it, will not let the public know about...

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

there are a couple out there, not for sale, but then again EVERYHING is for sale in Colombia, it really depends on your budget....

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

it has to be 30, and in some cases 35 years or older, you have to get your import licenses from MINCOMEX before you actually start the import proscess, then you will have to have the "higher ups" at the club de antiguos y claiscos de colombia, give you their blessing, they will write a leter to the Dian saying that the car in the pictures that you submitted, indeed looks like a classis, once the car lands in Colombia, they will do a full inspection, along with the DIAN, and give the DIAN their ok.....it's more involved than this, but these are the basics..........if you want to import a "regular" used car, or bike, there are several other ways of legally doing so, but as always, very expensive, and troublesome.......

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

Colombia's internal classic car market is really very small, it is controlled by a handful of traquetos and oligarcas, we already buy here in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and other countries, and export worldwide, we already import from the U.S., restore and sell here, and other countries in South America...we are also the only company in the world to offer a certaing brand of classic car built 100% in Colombia, we are about to start exporting these vehicles as kits, to be assembled in the U.S., the U.K., Mainland Europe, Australia, and South Africa...

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

I think you guys are right about "trying" to do any sort of exporting out of Colombia....... short of Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, organized crime, Oil, Flowers(soon they will be getting killed), Coffee(they are getting killed also), Coal, and all the other "traditional" exports....you are pretty much "dead in the water" sort of speak....maybe it's time to head to China, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam(the new China), and take advantage of the slave labor there.......:):):):):)

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

yeah, people are like that though.......people are very finicky with their investments, especially when it comes to "third world" countries, and speically when their money is going to be "on the ground"....it's a big difference when you buy into a third world growth fund here and there, it's another thing altogether when an investor puts his money into funding a production facility, the machinery located in that facility, labor, with all the problems that brings...etc,.etc.etc....

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

I have been to China, I have been to big the factories, right before I moved down here, that is a place, and a people I do not want to do business with, the quality is not there, unless I want to move my family there, and be on the factory floor all day....China is not the panacea (as far as manufacturing goes) that most people believe it is.....there are ways to compete with China, and beat them....we cater to a customer who does not want anything to do with Chinese made products being installed on their cars......besides, I would rather create jobs here in Colombia, than move my manufacturing to the far east....

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

My work has to do with the classic car industry, alot of the products that are on the market today are made in China, and the Far East....we (a group of enthusiasts) saw a lot of potential in Colombia a few years back, I made the move, and set up a small manufacturing plant, the Dollar was at almost $2,800, we have seen the dollar steadily lose ground here in Colombia.....the idea was to bring in ALOT of manufacturing here to Colombia, we have cotracts with BIG players in the classic car industry, but the way it looks right now, my potential investors see this place as too unstable, the currencey fluctuations make them nervous, Chavez makes them nervous...it took a long time just to convince people that the crates of parts sent north from here were not going to have any cocaine in them, it took time to work thru all the bullshit, the stereo typing etc.etc..........we have been trying to hold on, and stay put, and we could probably keep going for quite a while, but in this business, you either grow, or dissapear.... the problem is, the currency going up, the currency coming down, there is no sense of stability, prices fluctuate wildly(for steel at least)...fuel prices are incredibly high for a "producing" country, add to this, the occasional temper tantrum by our inmature neighbors, and you have a "never a dull momment" type of situation.....daily.....that's ok if you are a retired american looking for fun, or a "drop out" hiding down here, but for a manufacturing business getting ready for a major "growth spurt", this is not good.......we might have to find a quieter neighborhood......in the end, it's always the Colombian worker, and his family who winds up "taking it in the shorts", sort of speak...not good....

jarhead comments on $1....1793 cop

Interesting how some people on here are so happy about this whole "U.S. dollar tanking" against the peso thing, they claim to love Colombia so much, etc.etc.etc....well there are ALOT of Colombians feeling the pain of this whole revaluation crap, there are a shitload of them losing their jobs right now, and a whole lot more about to...I for one have let go of some, and will let go of more as we head for the magical $1,000COP to $1 dollar mark......................... I belong to several exporter organizations, and the news is not good, and it will not be getting any better, anytime soon, there are plans that are going to be put into action here soon, that will result in the loss of ALOT of Colombian jobs........I wonder how happy/cheerful those out of work people are about this whole revaluation thing?????????

jarhead comments on £15,000 To Invest or Bussiness idea

craigyvane, my advise to you would be for you not to invest in Colombia, there are other Latin American countries that would be better suited for investment.........Colombia, while being an incredibly beautiful country, with nice people, killer geographic location, etc.etc...has a very hostile business enviroment, this is not a business friendly country, banking services are crap, labor is expensive, and problematic, taxes will kill you, infrastructure is almost non existant, add to this the rising strenght of the peso... If you must set up a business here, you would be fool if you involve your wife's family, that is the WORST possible mistake you could make, it will probably end your marrige, be weary of EVERYONE, most everyone is on the take, when it comes to money, or when money is involved.....you MUST live here if you want to set a business up, you must be personally in charge of that business 100% of the time, or you will be out of business in a second...I know there will be a lot of pissed off people, or people who do not agree with this assesment, but it is my personal opinion, based on my experiences, and experiences of American friends, who by the way, are running their own successful business here in Bogota, as we speak...... I have been in Bogota for over 3 years, I set up a classic car parts manufacturing business, we export to, and have distributors in the U.S., the U.K., Holland, Canada, South Africa, Japan, and Australia..... we deal here in Colombia with Camara de Comercio, ProExport, several Colombian, and foreign banks,UPS, FedEx,shipping lines, various suppliers of goods and services, every day, I have over 25 employees, we deal with the headache of providing health insurance, retirement, pension etc.etc....so I am not making this up, this opinion is based on everyday experiences, if I had to do it all over again, I would do it in another country....and BTW, I am Colombian, born in Cali, raised in the states......

jarhead comments on "We live like the dead:" Colombia hostage letter

I think we have to look past all the propaganda, the pictures in the newspapers, Chavez, Piedad Cordoba etc..etc.. and really try to figure out what is the real reason why all this shit is happening, and we cannot seem to get anywhere with these, so called negotiatios, why the FARC, ELN, the Uribe government, etc...cannot reach a peace agreement...in my own personal opinnion, I think there is too much money being made,(the drug trade) by too many people for them to come to an agreement, and for a lasting peace to finally be achieved in Colombia...remember, there is money to be made during times of chaos......and for the last 40 years, we have had nothing but chaos...I have a feeling this will not change anytime soon......I hate to say this, I have family here, and I know it would slowly kill me to see a member of my family in a similar situation,,,, but these people being held captive will probably never be released alive....

jarhead comments on Finding a "professional" job in Colombia

dc321, about 4 years ago, I was thinking the way you are thinking now, I was the Director of IT for a large company in Miami, the pay was nice, but I was sick and tired of being one of the herd, living in the U.S....I did my homework, it helped that I was born in Cali Colombia, that I can speak fluent spanish, also, read and write it, it also helped that my wife was born and raised in Bogota, I thought that it would help that I had massive IT experience, a college degree, and all the IT certifications in the world (it did not), I also thought that it would help that my sister in law is Country Manager for a major U.S. based software firm (the one based in Long Island N.Y.) it did not....there was no way in hell that I could make the money that I made in Miami, here in Bogota, so I said fuck it, I'll start my own business.....Jessssusss what an eye openning experience this has been, I did my research, thought about what I liked, what my hobbies are, what could be made here in Colombia and exported to the rest of the world (no, not the white powdery substance :):):))...I finally stumbled onto a niche market...I now have a plant in Bogota, 20 employees, and a product that we export all over the first world, I say first world because the product we export is a commodity, or should we say a luxury item, not a neccesity, people in poor countries would not dream of buying our product................the point that I am trying to make with all this babbling is: maybe you should forget about working for someone else, and think about starting your own business...it is a VERY tough road, but achieving what you want to achieve now is also a VERY tough road, and (not to rain on your parade) very unlikely....regardless of the rosy picture the DANE, the president and all his clueless ministers want to paint, there is massive under employment, and VERY HIGH unemployment here in Colombia, things are not peachy king like alot of people on this site would have you believe, it is tough out there for the average person...this is STILL a third world country, with third world problems......hope this helps......

jarhead comments on Unemployed Bogota Colombian Dons Iron Mask-As in Iron--

So I ask myself, where is all this job growth the DANE keeps talking about????, according to our politicians, Bogota's economy is growing at 9% a year, where is this economic miracle everyone keeps talking about????....try telling this poor bastard that the economy is booming, that he is living in one of the cities with the fastest growing economies in Latin America, try telling him that his country has one of the hottest currencies in the world.......I think that all these "statistics" that the government likes to throw out there for the world to see, are kind of insignificant to him.......Did you guys read that study that the Nacional University did regarding job creation in Colombia, it found that in the last 14 yeas, Colombia has not created one single permanent, quality job...a job with ALL the benefits that make it a quality job,,,,not a one,,,,, well maybe the 15 jobs that my company has created, 15 jobs with every benefit that an employee can have................

one of my sons attends the Montessori British School, it is supposed to be a "bilingual" school, I go and speak with my son's teachers from time to time, to see how things are going, etc.etc.....now, I was born in Colombia, but left when I was a child, but Spanish has ALWAYS been spoken in my home, I speak "normal" American English, I do not have an accent, etc.etc........let me tell you this, the English teachers at my son's school can barely speak English, their pronunciation is fucking horrible, this from a school that charges an outrageous amount of money....I have a niece that is one of the "best, and most expensive" schools here in Bogota, she is 11 years old, has been in expensive bilingual schools all her life, her English language skills leave a lot to be desired also.......it's fucking waste of money..........they learn more English by going to the U.S. for 2 months out of the year for summer vacation..............

jarhead comments on Estados Unidos

I think the ability to do whatever the hell you want, when you want is great, here in Colombia you can pretty much do whatever you want (withing reason), when you want to, I think that's somewhat ok.....in the states you cannot do a lot of the things you can do here in Colombia, sometimes you feel like you are living in a police state, like the Gestapo is just right around the corner...that's not so great.....with all this being said, there are two sides to every story......I live in a house in a nice neighborhood(it belongs to my mother in law), quiet, clean, etc.etc.etc......I have some neighbors that like to party a lot, (I think they are costenos), they have a huge family that they like to invite over, and they invite them over OFTEN....they bring a Vallenato band with them, and proceed to party till daylight, they do this every other week, I am not an old grouch, but I do like to get a good night's rest, I have spoken to the neighbors, I have tried to reason with them, to no avail, I have called the cops, to no avail, last time I called the cops, I saw one of the people who answered the door, slip the cop some cash....(their problem is solved) as far as I am concerned, those people are violating my rights, my right to get a good nights sleep...in the states I would have called the cops, the cops would have come, the party would have either ended, or the volume would have been turned down..........the point of this stupid little story is that, while some of us think it's great to have all this "freedoms" here in Colombia, or other third world countries like Colombia, (where it is pretty much a free for all)...there needs to be laws, and an agency that is willing and able to enforce those laws, be they disturbing the peace, or at the other extreme, murder, kidnapping, et.et.......remember it is cool/great when there are no laws, or laws that are loosely enforced, BUT ONLY when the result of those laws not being enforced do not directly affect us....

yeah, I remember those days, I was stupid not buying property here back then, god you could pick up property for a "song" if you did your research, but, not to worry, the "cycle" is starting again, this time I'll be ready.....................I am renting a 600 square meter bodega right now in el Eduardo Santos, when I moved in here a year ago, the little prick who owns it, wanted to sell it to me for $300.000.000, last week he let me know that if I wanted to buy it, the price had gone up to $475.000.000......I told him to shove it up his culo..........a 150.000.000 peso increase in price in one year......I'll see where he is at(price wise) in 12 months, I have a feeling he will not be so cocky next time we speak.....(if he has not sold the property in the time being)

no, Colombia is a free for all, I just did a hardware/software unlock on my phones, and I we put that info out there for all to use (in spanish) here in Colombia, I just found it interesting that with this particular product "they" reacted this way....I think this will set a precedent....from now on this is going to be the norm in the states

jarhead comments on IPHONE has been Unlocked and Verified by a AP Reporter who used his T-Mobile Simchip and used the phone

Here is where all this unlock shit is going in the U.S.................... Hackers who unlock Apple's iPhone from the AT&T network and share the method with 10 million of their closest Internet friends are inviting a lawsuit from the two companies, several intellectual property (IP) lawyers said Monday. Apple and AT&T may have a legal case against unlockers under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), especially if they try to sell software code or devices that unlock the iPhone, the lawyers said. But the legal landscape gets a bit complicated -- there's a legal exception to the DMCA's anticircumvention provisions that allows individual mobile phone users to unlock their devices for use on other networks. So figuring out how to unlock the iPhone yourself is not likely to be a DMCA violation, most of the IP lawyers said. But posting instructions or code online, even for free, may earn you a cease-and-desist letter from an unfriendly lawyer, and selling software or a device that unlocks the phone is inviting trouble, most of the lawyers said. But there's plenty of disagreement among IP lawyers about the interpretation of the DMCA. "It's an extremely grey [area], because I don't think the exemption was altogether clear," said Bart Showalter, an intellectual property lawyer in Dallas with the Baker Botts LLP law firm. "The idea of trying to use copyright to, in a sense, establish exclusivity in a service contract ... is going to be an interesting thing to watch." John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, had planned to release software Saturday that would allow users to unlock their iPhone. But early Saturday morning, McLaughlin said he received a phone call from a man saying he was from a law firm representing AT&T. The caller said McLaughlin could be sued for copyright infringement. Two other groups have claimed to have unlocked the iPhone. Representatives of both AT&T and Apple declined to comment Monday on possible legal actions against unlockers. Showalter suggested that unlocking the iPhone and posting code or instructions for free would likely fall under the exception to the DMCA's anticircumvention provisions, thus protecting the unlocker from legal action. The exception allows circumvention of device controls "for the sole purpose of lawfully connecting to a wireless telephone communication network," according to language from the U.S. registrar of copyrights. So if a hacker unlocks the iPhone, then posts the unlocking code for free, he's engaging in a legal activity and enabling others to engage in the same legal activity, said Michael Lewis, an IP lawyer with Fox Rothschild LLP. If that hacker is sued, he could probably argue that posting of the unlocking code is protected by free speech provisions in U.S. law, according to Lewis. Other IP lawyers disagreed. Movie studios have successfully sued Web site operators for distributing the DeCSS DVD-copying code, noted Carole Handler, an IP lawyer with Foley and Lardner LLP. The unlocker of the iPhone who posts code online could be held liable for secondary copyright infringement, she said. "I don't see that [Apple and AT&T] have a choice," Handler said. "They have to do something. If you don't protect your intellectual property, it's gone." Lewis' colleague, Gerry Norton, agreed, saying the unlocking exception was narrowly written. "The exception was just for the end-user," he said. Most of the lawyers agreed that selling software to unlock the iPhone, as McLaughlin was planning to do, would invite a lawsuit under the DMCA. "The courts seem to have less sympathy for people who are doing things to make a buck," Lewis said. But there wasn't even unanimous agreement on the legal liability of selling unlocking software. If the software being distributed targeted only the network lock on the iPhone, the developer could have a defense, Showalter said. "It does seem a little unusual to me that they say somebody can unlock their phone, but if someone tells them how to do it, that's a violation of the DMCA," he said. "If the software that's being sold is only doing the minimum amount that's necessary to allow it to interoperate with other services, you may have some support in the DMCA exception." Beyond the legal questions about unlocking the iPhone, Apple and AT&T could face their own legal challenges, Handler said. The exclusive contract between the two companies could lead to an antitrust lawsuit if a competitor or customer could successfully argue there's no other device like the iPhone available on the market, she said. "Consumers want new technology," she said. "This is the era of the consumer controlling the media. When the consumer is told he or she can't do something, they get pretty upset, and they start claiming conspiracy, antitrust, and the whole bit."

the kid sold the phone,(or traded it) for a brand new nissan 350z roadster, and 3 8gb i phones...there are 2 other ways to do a software unlock of the i phone now...the catch is.....AT&T notified these people right before they were to start selling the "unlock" online, that their ass would be sued if the unlock was released...so right now, the only way to unlock the i phone is via a sofware/hardware unlock..........I have some i phones in my office, and a couple of dorky Colombian techies standing by to unlock them.....everyone is in a "holding pattern" right now, awaiting the outcome of the AT&T legal action................

Oh, and BTW, I am a tax paying(taxed to the hilt), voting Colombian citizen, who lives here FULL time, and whose family lives here FULL time, I did not have to buy my way into this country using an "investor visa".........I think this gives me a bit more right than you to express my views regarding MY country, be they positive or negative.........

Hey Rubito you having an opinion, and not agreeing with what I, or other people have to say is fine, now calling me, or someone else ignorant, or any other derogatory name, now that is something altogether different...for your information my "friend", my business has nothing to do with "raw materials" or shit like that, I am in an altogether different line of work....for your information I love this country, I was born in this country (where were you born???), my whole family was born here, that does not mean I am blind to how fucked up a lot of things are here, but you would not see that, since you are probably the "typical young musician", again, you might not like what I post on this site, but, it's my educated point of view, it is an open forum, and I, like you have the right to do so....BTW the dollar is up over $2,000 today :):):):)

jarhead comments on U.S. abandons Colombia

Hey Rubito, I moved back to Colombia after living abroad for 30 years, and the reason I moved back is because I am one of the very few in this country who has the balls to put his money where his mouth is, BTW where do you live??? me and people like me are the ones that really have the right to open our mouths and speak our minds, regardless of whether you or "cbbook6104", or people like you like what we say or not..we are the ones that are working hard every day providing jobs for the average, and the poor in this country, paying our para fiscales, so that some corrupt politician can take them, and put them in his pocket....yet we ask nothing in return.....just to be able to enjoy this beautiful country.... hey cbbook6104, where do you live????how many people do you employ here in Colombia????or maybe you live in a nice comfy house up in the U.S.....when was the last time you were in Venezuela????I go to Venezueal on bussines every 3 weeks, and it is true that some fucked up shit is happening there, we must admit that worse things are happening here in Colombia, how many mass graves have been found in Venezuela lately, how many kidnappings have taken place lately in Venezuela???, how may kidnappings take place daily here in Colombia????? Chavez is a direct result of a Venezuelan ruling class that never gave a shit about it's poor, who BTW are the majority, just like here in Colombia...their ruling class, just like ours all live the good life in Miami, we, the ones that are here on the ground are left to deal with all the shit going on, FARC, ELN, Paracos, Traquetos, Lagartos etc.... The bottom line here is, nothing will change in this country until the average citizen rises up, and causes a radical change to take place, we cannot continue the way we are, if that means putting a character like chavez in power, then so be it, the situation will not be any worse than what we have now.....

jarhead comments on Hey GIB! It seems that economy in Bogotà is at its best...

robi, all my employees have credit cards, shit I wrote their certificacion laboral....I have written over 30 of those in the last year, they live in Soacha, Ciudad Bolivar, they can barely afford to eat, and they all have credit cards with at least a 2 million credit line.....all they need is a copy of the cedula, and a certificacion laboral...some of these guys have 2 and 3 cards.....I pay them on the 15th and 30th of every month...two days later they are asking me for a loan, the funny thing is, if you look in their pockets, they all have apple Ipods, or the latest cell phone, fucking cell phones worth 6 or 700,000 pesos......let's see what happens with that credit card debt when I have to get rid of most of them, or I have to close down the factory because I cannot stay afloat due to the dropping dollar!!!!!!!
