A busy but stunning desert city with forts and palaces, bazaars and marktes aplenty. It's the gateway to Rajasthan, with lots of tourists.
Population: 2.5 million | Editing history.
When you arrive you will be almost attacked by drivers and touts wanting to take you to a hotel. They all take a commision, of course, and it's often large. If you make a reservation in advance, many hostels will pick you up. There are plenty of budget hostels here.
The old city (the pink city) lies within a wall and is a great place to wander. There is also a LOT of good shopping to do here, but use all the bargaining powers you can muster. Be careful with buying precious stones - if you're not an expert, you are likely to be scammed or ripped off - don't believe claims that you can resell gems at home at a huge profit.
You can get here by train, bus, plane or car. Plenty of buses to and from Delhi take about 6 hours. Buses to Jaisalmer take 15 hours, to Jodhpur 8 hours.
