Amritsar is a large city where you can find the holiest shrine of the Sikhs: the golden temple.
You can stay in the same accomodation where the pilgrims stay, which is basic (and there's a 3-day limit) but interesting. You don't have to pay, but you should leave a donation. Apart from that, there are also guesthouses in town.
The golden temple complex is open to visitors and welcoming.
