aka Alleppey is a small town with canals that is the most popular place to organize the famous backwater tours of Kerala.
The town itself is interesting, and it's nice to spend a few days while organizing a tour of the Kerala backwaters. You can take a simple tour during the day (cheap), or rent a boat for a day or two with meals included (wonderful but expensive). You can also visit the Matha Marithanandamayi mission (http://www.amritapuri.org), which is an ashram that's very friendly and welcoming. You can stay there for a few dollars a day, including a simple meal. You'll have to follow the rules of the place though, and dress conservatively.
