DIAN, DANE or DAS?

Hi everyone! My husband, my son and I were given 60 days when we entered the country on July 2nd. I was told that if longer was needed to go to one of the above and request an extension, but by the life of me, I can't remember which one...Could anyone shed some light on this. We would like to stay for another 3 months.
Thank you, ...

Help.... I mean it!

My husband, my 12 year old and I relocated from Florida on July 2nd. I am originally from Bogota but have lived in the States for 25 years. My husband is adjusting quite well, in fact he loves Bogota, the weather the people, etc. etc. My son, on the other hand, is very unhappy, he has no friends and spends his days watching TV or sleeping. His passion is skateboarding but we haven't found anyplace in Bogota that he feels comfortable at. If not skateboarding, is there any camp (soccer or what ...

Cable TV et al

Hi, I will be arriving in Bogota next Sunday, July 2nd. We have rented a furnished apartament in Calle 88 Cra. 17. Could anyone advise me of what cable company offers some TV channels in English. I am travelling with my husband (british) and son (American) and, inasmuch as I would love for them to learn Spanish quickly, I also would love have some channels in English. Any advice?
Thanks, ...

Metro Gym Bogota

Hi -- could anyone let me know if above gym is any good? They are in Calle 93. I will be living in Calle 88 Cra 17 so it would be very convenient, I found it on the Yellow Pages but they don't seem to have a website. My next selection would be BodyTech but that's a little farther for me to go, though not impossible.
Thank you for any suggestions/comments. ...

To Lucia Rojas

Lucia: You seem to know quite a lot about bilingual schools in Bogota. Could you give me your input on Gimnasio del Norte and perhaps The Abraham Lincoln schools? I need one that is truly bilingual since my son doesn't speak or write any Spanish.
Thank you Lucia, ...

Cablenet --et al

Upon my arrival in Bogota, I will be renting a furnished apartment near Unicentro; the owner says it is cable-ready. How long does it take from my arrival to having the service up and working. I really need to have internet access due to my vonage phone. I read somewhere that it could take a month, so should I have it install before I arrived?
Thank you,
Ines ...

Gimnasio del Norte

My 12 year old and I will be arriving in Bogota early July. I have made an appointment at Gimnasio del Norte which basically was the only school that very nicely replied to my emails. Any thoughts about this school will be appreciated. BTW, my son doesn't speak or read Spanish.
Thanks! ...

A bet and ..statistics

Having dinner with my husband last night and discussing security issues in Florida, etc. he asked me if I knew how many kindnappings have occurred in Bogota in 2006, I said I thought it would be in the hundreds, he said it couldn't possible be more than 10 thus far. A dinner at Carrabas Sarasota is riding on this. I'm sure I am right but I told him I'd you ask you guys and show him the answers.
Thanks! ...

What a sad thing to happen...

I am sure you all read in today's El Tiempo about the policeman who was only 2 months away from retiring and got killed in the line of duty; all because he tried to stop some h.p's from stealing a car in barrio Carolina, and I thought the nort part of the city was safe. I can only imagine how the family feels. ...

Call me dumb and dumber...

What exactly do you guys mean when you say "prepago girl"; that expression didn't exist when I was there 25 years ago and I guess I've been under a rock all this time.
Just curious,
Ines

Skateboarding in Bogota

Hi -- does anyone know of any skateboarding parks or places in Bogota? I've surfed the web a few times and can't find anything.

Thank you,

Frank_44, since you are leaving soon

I wonder if you would like to share your experiences in Bogota with us, what you liked the best, what you could've done without and especially if it was the kind of experience you will always remember or would prefer to forget. Was Bogota everything that you expected, were you disappointed or pleasantly surprised, etc.

I personally wish you all the best wherever you go.. ...

Some good news?

According to today's El Tiempo:

En el 2005 se cometieron 17.726 homicidios en Colombia, el número más bajo en 17 años

El director de la Policía, general Jorge Daniel Castro dijo que aunque ese número aún es preocupante, representa una “disminucíón trascendental” .

Aseguró que es una muestra de la tendencia a la baja que ese delito ha experimentado desde el 2003. Desde 1988, cuando se presentaron 21.129 casos, las cifras de homicidios han ...

Colegio Abraham Lincoln

Hello everyone. Could anyone tell me anything (good/bad/neutral) about this bilingual school?

Thanks,

Throw us a rope....we are coming aboard!

It was a real pleasure to meet GringoinBogota face to face at last and to hear his comments on Colombia at first hand. While my wife and I travel on American passports, she is from Bogota and I am from Pembroke Dock, a small town in Wales. We have lived and worked in many countries in Asia, Australasia, Latin America and Europe so our attitude is a little different from “Real Americans”. We see the USA as a great nation filled with very generous people but nonetheless with problems just l ...

Does anyone have an idea if it is possible to hire a live-in nurse in Bogota and how much the monthly cost would be?

Thanks,

Colombia Vs. Ecuador

No, I am not talking a soccer game, just wondering out of curiosity how much safer Quito is than Bogota? I will have the chance to relocate next year and my husband (an English man) says he would follow me anywhere. We have a 12 year old so safety and peace of mind are extremely important.

Would like to hear your comments,

Ines ...

Fontana Plaza Suites

Hello! Before I make reservations for September 3-10, does anyone have anything good or bad to say about above place. They are in Av. 15 # 126.54. I think they are part of Travelers Suites. BTW, will there be a PBH get together going on that week? I'd love to attend one.

I have tried to find that articule to show my husband but I can't find it anywhere. The person that posted it, could you please let me know where it is or where you got the info from.

Houses -- not apartments

Hi, it is I again. I check in El Tiempo and Metro Cuadrado almost daily and there seems to be a great number of real estate companies who deal with sale of apartments. My husband and I would like a house with a tiny garden and maybe space for a dog to run. Is this possible in Bogota nowadays that the city has been built from side to side? Do you know of any good real estate or website where I can see houses in construction or undergoing projects. I could put the money down for a house that's ...

Hello everyone. Could someone who has a house in Chia or any place strato 5 o 6 tell me which are the annual taxes? My sister has a house in strato 4 and she said she almost had to sell the house to be able to pay the taxes..!! Is she exaggerating? Cost of living in Bogota....

The answer from Elsa Lopez to an inquiry about cost of living in Bogota (she said US$ 4,000/month) has really floored me. Would like to have answers from real experiences, not what people have told them, as to what is needed to live comfortably in Bogota. Supposing I will buy a house in cash, what about food (for 3 people), utilities, insurance, entertainment and a good school for my son.. Would this really amount to US$4,000 a month? ...

Lawyers - Real Estate / Taxes

Hi everyone, don't know if I ever told how grateful I am for all your comments and advice. Well, since no good deed goes unpunished; here I go again. My husband and I will be travelling to Bogota in July and we need to get in touch with lawyers regarding buying real estate (not right away) and to know all about taxation. He receives Social Security from USA and another funds from other sources. Could you guys recommend someone reliable and friendly, I could get in touch with upon my arrival?

Buying a house in Colombia

Hi guys - I know this subject has been discussed a few times already but God knows I need a lot of explaining! I am from Bogota, has been away for 25 years and now, at my old age plan to come back to Colombia to spend my declining years, ha! My husband is British and just retired, so we plan to live on the money he will receive from retirement and another pension, around US$4,000/month. First, I have read that we will be taxed around 35% or 40%on any money we withdraw. We don't plan on openin ...
