IMorcombe comments on To Lucia Rojas Thank you For your replies. Yes, Gimnasio del Norte has the IB program, also the International School but they haven't replied to any of my emails so I guess I will give my business to Gimnasio del Norte. The English School appears to be very very good but they already told me they don't have "cupo" for anyone else for the coming school year and the colegio Gran Bretana, which I visited last year in September, is just too damn expensive...They did away with the "bono" which was almost US$6,000 but the pensiones are up and up..I am not quite willing to pay nearly US$800 monthly...now US$450 is more up my alley.

IMorcombe comments on Do i need a Visa, if im in colombia for three months? To Gator Thank you for all the info. I will get my husband's authorization when it is time to come back to the States. In the meantime, I am not taking any chances and going to get RT tickets for both of us.

IMorcombe comments on Do i need a Visa, if im in colombia for three months? To Gator Thanks. He was born in Chapel Hill, N.C. USA.

IMorcombe comments on Do i need a Visa, if im in colombia for three months? ....and a child? What if I have a colombian passport but my child (12) has a USA passport? Will he be allowed to enter the country without a return ticket.

IMorcombe comments on Gimnasio del Norte Bilingual Oh yes definitely. I wouldn't want to dump my poor kid in an only-spanish atmosphere. He is already complaining about the move, so I have to try to make things for him as easy as possible.
IMorcombe comments on Please don't! Your comments and warnings are of real value to most of us. Remember you can't please all the people all the time. When I was a child and I complained to my mother that so and so didn't like me, she would say: "si usted fuera monedita de oro todo el mundo la querria, pero como no es"...

IMorcombe comments on A bet and ..statistics Behave! Hey guys behave! I was the one that started this thread and the bet with my husband as to many kidnappings in Bogota in 2006 and just look at what a simple question deterioated into. As far as my own bet, I think my husband won...! at #$%!
IMorcombe comments on A bet and ..statistics me and my big mouth Thanks Rubiazo; I do remember saying "just in 2006...hundreds"...He wants us to relocate in July to Bogota and here I am, a Colombian, trying my darndest to discourage him!

MontesdeOca I just sent an email to smr at telsat.com.co requesting information and it was returned to me with the following notice: Sorry, I couldn't find any host named telsat.com.co. (#5.1.2)

IMorcombe comments on Out of touch... I personally, for whatever is worth, always appreciate and respect GIB's comments re security. He started the thread by just asking everyone to be a little more careful than usual and the thread very quickly deteriorated into insults and useless comments. I prefer to know exactly what is going on so I can plan accordingly. Trying to tell people that everything is rosy is not only ridiculous but a big fat lie.

IMorcombe comments on Transferring funds for a house ?Help Thanks Gib I didn't know the CD thing could be done, great!
IMorcombe comments on Transferring funds for a house ?Help GIB's comments GIB: What you failed to mention is how much of a hassle is to rent a house in Colombia; unless something has changed drastically since I lived there, it is the process from hell. Have to get 2 people to co-sign and most of the time they don't want to do it because they have been burned once. These two co-signers need to have real estate and proof of means, etc, so it's not a walk in the park, plus the amount of paperwork. I had to do a lot less to become an american citizen!

IMorcombe comments on Colombians tell me not to live in Colombia Is it just me? But what do Madonna, first loves and sexual peak have to do with the initial posting....You guys drift quite a bit, like my 12 year-old would say "off subject"...

IMorcombe comments on I am curious, is Chia considered a part of Bogota as far as estratos; would it be 4, 5 or 6; or does Chia have its own estratos? If someone could tell me what the costs, in Chia, would be for electricity, gas, water, etc. for a family of 4 (hot water at all times!), I would appreciate it. I am working on my monthly budget!

IMorcombe comments on Skateboarding in Bogota Thanks! my 12 year old will be very happy to hear it. He thinks he will be the only one who skate-boards in Bogota!

IMorcombe comments on Frank_44, since you are leaving soon Wastelandlive Sure thing but I don't think that we can blame him for feeling this way. If he posts that he pays the maid such money, then he is exploiting people, if he says he gives a little more, then he is setting a bad example for the rest...darn if you do, darn if you don't..
IMorcombe comments on What Should I Buy? House or Apartment? Thanks Wasteland: Now my job will be trying to discourage my gringo husband since he is the one that loved Bogota and is very excited about the idea of retiring there. I was born and raised there but left 25 years ago and never looked back...until now!
IMorcombe comments on What Should I Buy? House or Apartment? Sorry, I guess I am trying to convince myself that my husband, my child and I will be safe, but the more I think about and read stories the more I feel that I will have to stay in the States, even if that means working (to pay for medical insurance) for the rest of my days... Pity, I was looking forward to enjoying Bogota ...
IMorcombe comments on What Should I Buy? House or Apartment? Wastelandlive; so if some bad hombre notices the gringo, the wife and the kid, what difference does it really make if they live in a house or an apartment? Most likely they are going to grab one of them on the way to the store or leaving school. Besides, I think there are plenty of houses that are in "conjuntos cerrados" that offer plenty of security. I, like Rikito, plan to retire with a gringo husband 6.3" and a child and for what I understand kidnappers only focus their attention on the very very rich but I've been mistaken before..

IMorcombe comments on Hotels near Andino (Bogota) Viaggio Suites My family and I stayed there in September. The place is neat, safe and reasonably priced. They are located in Calle 86 Cra. 19, walking distance from Centro Andino but still in a very quiet area. Breakfast is included in the rate. Here is the website: http://viaggiosuites.com/

IMorcombe comments on Tourists Held Near Park Tayrona GIB - you wrote "If you have family here than they can slowly milk you out of everything and if you leave kill your family member or threaten too" So, are you saying that if I relocate with a 12 year old, chances are that he will be kidnapped, just because my husband looks like he has money (which he doesn't). How are gringos who live on retirement benefits treated? I guess my question is: how much money a person needs to have to make him/her a good candidate for kidnapping/extortion. Do they bother with people who just survive on a pension?

IMorcombe comments on Colombians!!!! A question for Colombians who live in the USA I have been in the USA for 25 years, how my life has changed? whatever happens in the USA I feel much safer here than I ever did in Bogota. I can wear gold necklaces and nice earrings and nobody scratches my neck or tears my ears to steal them. Still, we are planning to go back to Colombia in June for good; can't afford medical care here... :-{ unless I work for the rest of my days, which I am not planning to do.

IMorcombe comments on Friday jokes. I'm telling ya, i get no respect. Another blondie This blonde is flying to New York and she sits in First Class, one of the flight attendants notices that she has a coach ticket and asks her to leave, the blonde says "I am blonde, I am beautiful and I am going to New York" and doesn't budge; the attendant gets this burly guy to talk to her but the blonde insists that she is blonde, beautiful and she is going to New York and stills doesn't move. The attendants go to the captain and tell him that they are having problem with a blonde that is sitting in first class with a coach ticket and that she doesn't want to move; the captain says "I'll fix that", then he goes and whispers something in the blonde's ears, she rapidly gets up and goes to economy class; the attendants couldn't believe their eyes and told the captain "we tried everything and she just didn't move; what did you say to her?" the captain said "I told her that first class didn't go to New York".

IMorcombe comments on Throw us a rope....we are coming aboard! Throw us a rope..... My husband seems to have hit a nerve when he stated that K-12 education is a problem for the USA. Education is very important for us as our youngest son still has six years before he graduates from high school.

IMorcombe comments on Casa Dann Carlton To Colombiabusiness Hi -- do you have any connections with Suites Travelers -- think they have aparta-suites (Fontana Plaza) across the street from Unicentro, which would be great. I haven't been able to get an answer from them either.
IMorcombe comments on Casa Dann Carlton Casa Dann.. Thanks Colombiabusiness. Don't do anything just yet. What appeals to me about the Casa Dann Carlton is the indoor pool and the arcada/game room. I am going with my 11 year old; it will be his first visit to Bogota and if he gets bored, I might as well shoot myself between the eyes, because he is going to drive us crazy! on the other hand, if I can't sleep at night due to the noise, I will drive everyone nuts. Let me think about this one a little longer and of course I will let you know.

IMorcombe comments on Casa Dann Carlton Casa Dann Carlton Great info, thanks much. I did contact the Lloyd's aparta-suites but have not received any answer. Since I am not leaving until September 3, will keep trying. Thank you again,
