Hey Huskie, I haven't heard of those other two books you mentioned. I'll let you know what I think of "Love in the Time of Cholera" once I'm finished. I'm a third of the way through it. I've been wondering how they might make it into a movie considering the way it goes back in time. I was thinking the same thing with "Atonement". I just finished it last week and am curious as to what the movie is like. I don't know how they can tell the story and it have the same impact as the final chapter of the book. I won't go into detail in case you plan on reading it. :)

so, you're in albania now. you're life travel history is a lot like mine....with the exception that i did very little in europe and a whole fricken lot in the middle east, central and north africa, india, south america, cent america and mexico. for way too many years. i might note since you said you wanted to visit there, damascus is a trip...don't miss a street called 'straight' it's where paul met with the corinthians. great. too, in the north of syria is a city , alleppo. 'halab' in arabic. it has the largest covered (brick) bazar in the world. stretches for what seems to be miles. too, gaza is memorable, sad, but memorable. also, northern ethiopia.

how did a colombian get so lost as to find themself in albania??? you must have pulled the short straw.

well...what took me to colombia?

president gaviria went to school in my home town of fresno, california...i got myself invited to the enauguration ceremonies in bogota. from there, i had to see medellin, as i had run retail stores in the 'fast lane' for many many years. first in berkeley, then palm springs, malibu, santa monica, and ultimately, bev. hills/west hollywood. too, i was a research fellow at ucla researching textiles produced by migratory tribes in s.w. iran. spent about 13 years in and out of iran.

once in colombia, and off to medellin, after the boring ceremonies in bogota, although rife with violence and meyhem, medallo was just as romantic as i could ever imagine a place to be. romantic, you ask? yes, very much so... although there was a wretched war going on between capos and sicarios, the heart beat, life, unending fiesta, people, music, etc never stopped. it seduced me. i contacted my business partner who spent most of his time in london--we dealt in rare carpets--and told him we should move our mfg affairs to colombia, out of mexico, and i spent the next two and a half years heading up the mfg. operations. as it turned out, i married and, basically, never left....after these 19 years, it's home.

i don't like medallo, envigado and the central area ie laureles, belen, america et al, i now only enjoy the finca. this time when we go home, i'll try to figure out how to live in a finca closer in than llano grande so my wife and i don't need to live apart. that way she is a hop skip and a jump from the folks, in envigado. as long as i can watch the cows piss and listen to the chickens crow, i'm good to go and can devote myself to my memoirs.

one of my sons is a film maker, working in silicone valley and his older brother is a very, very successful contractor in washington d.c. the older puts up the money and the other makes the films. they want to do a film of my life and to effect that i need to step outta the lucha and feel free and unburdened to quietly record same. they pester me all the time and i really want to do this both for me and for them.

i have eight children. one, abraham, died of a medical accident in '94 from a medical accident, he was 28 at the time. and what would have been my youngest son--number 9--died in birth and is buried in las palmas in medellin...lucas danial.

well, now, the only child at home is laura juliana, born in medallo in '92. she is currently in a private catholic high school and since i don't want her studying in colombia and the fact that she's a candidate for the u.s. airforce academy and accepted at georgetown, mom and i are temporarily 'stuck' in the lethe of daytona beach florida...the cultureless waste land where 'culture' to the residents is nascar, motorcycles and tattoos...i have none of the above.

so, here we are, fish outta water and dying to go home. homesick to a fault and bored to tears. but, what can we do?

were you born in colombia? if so, where?

Hola Mi Very Educated PBH poster! Curious..I noticed your 4th of July post and other posts today. I am only curious. But, I see the word "gringo" a lot on the board. Personally I consider it very slang term. I don't see the term Americano/a used much on PBH. I just noticed it more today. I am not offended....it just looks like "low" terminology to me. Curious, is this maybe considered a term of endearment to Americanos? Is it only considered an informal word when used on PBH? What do you think oh beautiful Avatar lady jejeje
