Halliday comments on Colombian Films

Mi Abuelo, Mi Padre, y Yo I saw "My Grandfather, My Father, and I" While in Medellin a little over a year ago and thought it was very funny and moving. Speaking of which, does anyone know how I might buy it here in the USA?

Halliday comments on Entrepreneurship in Colombia

Reflections The trip was great. There was a center in one of the poorer neighborhoods where an NGO was trying to help locals set up small businesses. There was also a lot more development than when my GF was there 4 years ago (or so she said).

Halliday comments on Finding a job in Colombia

Monster Ah, I didn't know there was employment info on the site. Thanks! On another topic, Monster.com can be relatively useless when searching for international work.

Halliday comments on Cost of University?

And I thought it was cheap! Hmmm. those prices (4-7 mil)are aproaching the cost of public institutions in the united states. I thought university in Colombia was a bit cheaper.

Halliday comments on Anyone could recommend places to go in Medellin?

December I'm going in the last part of december too. Seems everyone will be there at that time, lol.

Halliday comments on Colombia & Halloween

Origins of Halloween Halloween, BTW, has it’s origins in the Celtic holiday. That is part of the reason it is so big in the US (lots of Celts). To the best of my knowledge, the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos and Halloween do not share common origins other than the fact that they were both partially incorporated into the Catholic tradition of All Saints Day.

Halliday comments on ethanol fuel production starts in Colombia

Re: Kudzu? Kudzu is a non-native plant imported into the US durring the "dust bowl" era to control soil erosion. It has since taken over much of the southern region of the US, much to the dismay of farmers. By some accounts, under perfect growing conditions the vine can grow a foot per day.

details Does anyone know what the criteria are for determining a good crop to produce ethenol? I know you can make it from pretty much anything... but all biomass is not created equal.

role of academia and such? Does anyone know what role academia plays in venture creation? Any good business schools? Are there business launch competitions or tech transfer or anything like that? I know these questions may sound silly, but you might be surprised what you can find. And Colombia has a high literacy rate and a fair amount of technically trained people.

Halliday comments on "Colombians, at least in Bogota, tend to be very judging"

Nothing New My mother makes statements like that and she's a gringa. Opinions are like belly buttons (everyone has one). Not everyone's opinion makes sense, however. Perhaps this is not a Colombian phenomenon but rather one of people in general who have a rather shallow understanding of things.

Halliday comments on Irritated! (a Colombian reply)

Unusual criticisms I have enjoyed reading many of these, I find it curious, however, that some people are so irritated by some of our cultural preferences (especially when they do not affect anyone else). "Families not showing as much affection" for example. It works for us. Believe it or not, most of our families are not dysfunctional. We simply have different interpersonal preferences. I can assure you that I take no offense at families that do show a lot of affection ;)

- Oh... my #1 irritation with the US is Americans who seem to remain actively ignorent about the rest of the world.

Halliday comments on Can an American own a house in Colombia?

Investment With all of this talk about the mechanics of buying a house in Colombia, I am curious; does it make sense from an investment stand point? In Medellin or Bogotá? To those who own houses there, what kind of appreciation of your property have you seen? Typically, when a conflict comes to an end in a particular region, there is a rapid increase of property values. Does anyone see this happening as things get better politically in Colombia? (I am, of course, optimistic enough to believe that things will get better)
